(Moderators: I know some of the material here is repeated from other threads but I wanted to keep all the related research together, and the History forum is the most logical place to keep it).

HART TROPHY

From 1931 to 2023 (92 seasons), the Hart trophy winner was a first-team all-star 82 times (89%), second-team all-star 8 times (9%), and unofficial third-team all-star twice (2%).

Hart winners & second all star team

1934: Aurel Joliat LW (Busher Jackson 1st Team)
1948: Buddy O'Connor C (Elmer Lach 1st Team)
1950: Chuck Rayner G (Bill Durnan 1st Team)
1964: Jean Beliveau C (Stan Mikita 1st Team)
1973: Bobby Clarke C (Phil Esposito 1st Team)
1980: Wayne Gretzky C (Marcel Dionne 1st Team)
1989: Wayne Gretzky C (Mario Lemieux 1st Team)
2002: Jose Theodore G (Patrick Roy 1st Team)

Hart winners & unofficial third all star team

1954: Al Rollins G (Harry Lumley 1st Team, Terry Sawchuk 2nd Team)
1955: Ted Kennedy C (Jean Beliveau 1st Team, Ken Mosdell 2nd Team)

====

It's interesting to examine the players in the latter category (ie, players who win the Hart trophy but who aren't first team all-stars that season).

In 1954, the Hart voting was done twice - once halfway through the season, and once at the end. Rollins appeared to have been dominant in the first half (posting an excellent 92.2% save percentage on an awful team) and was easily the vote leader partway through the season. His performance appears to have deteriorated in the second half of the year. Red Kelly, the runner-up, earned more votes than Rollins in the second-half voting, but not enough to catch up.

Rollins was excellent in 1953 and was runner-up to Howe`s absolutely dominant 1953 season (so maybe the voters gave him some extra votes the following year as they felt he lost a potential Hart due to bad timing).

The selection was openly questioned at the time (an article from 1954 states that "We can't recall when the experts made a more idiotic selection"). It's not outright historical revisionism for us to look at the stats six decades later and question it.

Also, some of the votes may have been pure pity - Rollins faced an enormous volume of shots on a very bad team (not a good reason IMO).

====

Kennedy announced his retirement prior to the 1954-55 season and this award is generally considered to be a "lifetime achievement award". He placed in the top five in Hart voting three times before (including finishing second in 1950) - he was definitely an elite player, just never the best in any given season. He was very similar to, although not as a good as, Mark Messier - a player with tons of "intangibles" who thrived in the playoffs.

It's also worth noting that three of the top five players in Hart voting were team mates (Maurice Richard, Jean Beliveau and Doug Harvey) so maybe Kennedy benefited from "vote splitting".

ART ROSS TROPHY

Note: prior to 1947, when the Art Ross trophy was first award, I looked at the league's highest scoring player. Out of the 92 seasons, the Art Ross winner was a first-team all-star 81 times (88%). Every other time, they were a second-team all-star.

Art Ross winners & second all star team

1937: Sweeney Schrinder LW (Busher Jackson 1st team)
1944: Herb Cain 2nd Team LW (Doug Bentley 1st team)
1947: Max Bentley C (Milt Schmidt 1st team)
1955: Bernie Geoffrion RW (Maurice Richard 1st team)
1965: Stan Mikita C (Norm Ullman 1st team)
1990: Wayne Gretzky C (Mark Messier 1st team)
1992: Mario Lemieux C (Mark Messier 1st team)
1994: Wayne Gretzky C (Sergei Fedorov 1st team)
2013: Martin St. Louis RW (Alexander Ovechkin 1st team)
2015: Jamie Benn LW (Alexander Ovechkin 1st team)
2022: Connor McDavid C (Auston Matthews 1st team)

A semi-related statistic. Only two players have ever won the Art Ross trophy and failed to earn at least one third-place vote for the Hart trophy - Gretzky in 1994, and Benn in 2015. (Gretzky was completely shut out from Hart trophy voting, Benn received some 4th and 5th place votes). Not sure if it's a coincidence, but both players were on non playoff teams.

VEZINA TROPHY

Prior to 1982, the Vezina trophy was a statistical trophy, equivalent to the modern Jennings trophy. The Vezina trophy has only existed in its current form since 1981-82. For that reason, I'm only looking at 1981-82 and beyond.

In the past 41 years, 38 Vezina trophy winners (93%) have been on the first all-star team. The three others have been on the second AS team.

Vezina trophy winners & second all star team

2002: Jose Theodore (Patrick Roy 1st Team)
2008: Martin Brodeur (Evgeni Nabokov 1st Team)
2021: Marc-Ande Fleury (Andrei Vasilevskiy 1st Team)

CONN SMYTHE TROPHY

The Smythe has been awarded from 1965 onwards. In the 58 times it's been awarded, the recipient has been a first-team all-star 15 times (26%), a second-team all-star 12 times (21%), an unofficial third-team all-star three times (5%), and not an all-star 28 times (48%).

Interesting that Roy wasn't in the top three in voting at his position in the regular season in each of the three times he won the Conn Smythe. (Nor was he in the top three in 1996, the fourth time he won the Stanley Cup). I wonder if this is a random pattern, or if a mediocre regular season (by his standards) made Roy hungrier and/or better rested for the Stanley Cup playoffs?

CALDER TROPHY

It's rare for a Calder trophy winner to make the year-end all-star team. Going back to 1937, the Calder has been awarded 86 times. The recipient has earned a spot on the first, second and unofficial third all-star teams six, five and one times, respectively.

SELKE TROPHY

The Selke trophy has been awarded 45 times since 1978. On only 9 occasions (20%) has the winner been an all-star. Interestingly, four of these nine players were Red Wings at the time (including three of the four players on the two official teams).

Let me know if you see any mistakes. Not planning on doing this for any other major award (Rocket Richard trophy, Pearson/Lindsay, Lady Byng, Jennings, etc).

Rather than having the Norris vs. 1st team all-star, is there any quick way to see how the Norris winner would do vs. being the leading All-Star vote getter for defensemen is? Like how Green was ahead of Chara in 08-09.

Edit: I'm manually going backwards through the list to see which years this applies. Lidstrom is ahead of Blake in '98. Howe ahead of Langway in '83. Potvin over Carlyle in '81.

Unfortunately I just have the end results for the all-star teams (ie "first team", "second team", "unofficial third team") without the actual voting points. I'd have to go back and manually look at some point.

The three you identified (Carlyle in 1981, Langway in 1983 and Blake in 1998) are, not surprisingly, three of the weaker Norris victories.

NORRIS TROPHY

Never happened. Every Norris trophy winner has been a first team all-star.

It has happened several times where the Norris trophy winner, while being 1st team all-star was second in all-star voting (even though still a 1st team all-star)

Interesting to see that 7 times has goalie won the Hart and 3 of those times that goalkeeper was NOT in the 1st All-Star Team.

Can we draw conclusions here that goalies are harder to place value on, or is it just statistical quirk do to small sample size?

Good point. It's the only position where you have 2 1st Team possibilities.

Add in Howell in 1967 (finished behind Pilote). Another weak Norris year. I don't know if I'm remembering it correctly but wasn't it awarded as a "lifetime achievement award" to Howell?

I've never heard that before, but Howell reportedly said something like "I'm glad I won the Norris this year because Bobby Orr is going to win it every year in the future".

This thread has been updated for 2016.

For the most part, the results were typical. The Hart, Art Ross, Vezina and Norris trophy winners were all first-team all-stars.

Crosby was a first-team all-star and won the Conn Smythe. That's only happened 13 times in NHL history. Still, his season feels a bit underwhelming compared to the others on that list.

Kopitar won the Selke trophy and was an unofficial third-team all-star. He's one of only eight Selke winners to be an all-star (albeit an unofficial third-stringer) during that year.

The Calder and and Selke trophy winners both placed out of the top three in all-star voting (which is also typical).

Note that Crosby was a second-team all-star in addition to the Conn Smythe winner. Only 24 players have been a first- or second-team all-star in the year they won the Conn Smythe, and Crosby has done it twice (along with Gretzky, Orr and Parent).

Ovechkin won the Conn Smythe and was an (unofficial) third-team all-star. Thus he's one of 27 players to win that trophy, while also placing in the top three in year-end all-star voting.

For the second time, Kopitar won the Selke and was an (unofficial) third-team all-star. Only Datsyuk has won two Selke trophies during years when he's been a third-team all-star (or better).

Semi-interesting...Freddy Andersen 4th for the Vezina but 11th for All Star Goalie voting...

I had Andersen on my Vezina radar, I thought he was great this year, I'm assuming he didn't have the stats, so the media didn't buy it...?

Exemplifies the gap between media(writers) and GM perspectives or why no NHL team hires writers as GMs and coaches.
