It's obviously very early, and the sample sizes are tiny, but just a couple observations:

-Flynn, Girgensons, Grigorenko, and Porter currently lead the team in offensive-zone starts %. Girgs and Flynn have played reasonably well, but when you're forced to give unpolished youngsters (Girgs and Grigs) and limited NHL players (Flynn and Porter) the prime scoring zone-starts, I think that's a sign of a poorly constructed roster.

-Vanek is a possession dog right now. Pretty much everyone he's played with does better without him than with him. Very small sample right now, though.

-In very few minutes, Larsson has been driving possession. Corsi Relative of 46.6 right now. Play him, Ron! Play him lots.

Good idea, I'll sticky it if you want (let me know).

You're the mod, so it's your call, obviously. But I wouldn't hate a sticky, because it'd be a lot easier for me to find--when threads fall off the first page, I tend to forget about them.

Could be that they're not getting enough OZ starts to get the T6 back on the ice.
That's certainly part of it, in addition to having a "needs to be sheltered all the time" line with Grigorenko on the ice (which is why I keep advocating for Ennis, Grigs and Stafford to be consolidated into one line). But it is rather odd that two of the teams' trusted defensive forwards are also leading in OSZ.

Maybe add shiftchart.com to the list?

Do eet. It also wouldn't hurt to add some all-around stat links to the list like http://hockey-reference.com (technically has some advanced stats: point shares, goals created, and adjusted player and goalie stats), http://eliteprospects.com and http://hockeydb.com

In fact, regarding stats on Hockey Reference, they just came out with two adjusted goalie stats: goals saved above league average and save%+.

Check out Hasek: http://www.hockey-reference.com/players/h/hasekdo01.html

I would like to point out that John Scott and Johan Larsson are the only players on our team with positive shot differentials.

Sabres looking for an edge through analytics:
Buffalo hired [hockey data analyst Jason Nightingale] in August to help them get an edge on the ice and in contract negotiations. Though it’s safe to assume every team dabbles in the growing field of sports analytics, only four clubs — Buffalo, Calgary, Chicago and Edmonton — list a specialist in their media guides.
“We focus on visuals and just trying to get a player to catch up on a concept. How do you break that apart into something that players work on, that we can identify and will actually be a teachable moment for them? Those are the challenges, the actual application. I think it helps to have played, to have that line of communication with the coaching staff and players.
“The role that luck plays in hockey is significant,” Nightingale said. “Your process can be good, but the outcome might not be what you want. A lot of times we measure outcomes, and when we see an outcome that’s not favorable, you need to understand is that because of a bad process or is it bad luck? I think that’s when you go back and the video will help.”

Pysyk, Girgensons, Larsson, Flynn, Porter, Ehrhoff - only Sabres above 45% Corsi%. Time to move some veterans, Sabres.

Buffalo had zero Corsi events from 15:09 remaining until 2:36 remaining. In other words, the Sabres couldn't even muster a shot at net for 13 minutes of a home game in which they were trailing by two goals.
How embarrassing.

Teaser for my upcoming Cody Hodgson defense article. He's been on ice for more 5v5 shots against than any forward in the NHL

I have this dreadful feeling that Hodgson will never win a Stanley Cup.

Wait, the most deployed center on the worst possession team in the league (with no other full-time pivots for the second year in a row) has seen a lot of shots against? Better buy him out

Coller is a tool with zero actual comprehension of advanced stats.
