glad to see something is giving in the Leafs 3rd pair logjam, an extra contract spot is welcome

good luck to Mr. Marchenko back in Russia, if that's what the plan is

KHL season is starting in a week and Marchenko would be a fairly high profile d-man over there so im sure someone thinks he'd be a big boost to their club - and pay accordingly.

Contract termination makes sense if he gets close to similar money, gets a chance to play in the Olympics and just play hockey in general, only appeared in 41 contests this past season.

Works for next season and his career, and obviously works perfectly for the Leafs.

Leafs really needed to open up a spot for prospects. Marincin should be moved too

KHL must be the explanation. No one gets waived at this point in the year. If that's the case, I wish him well.

Not to be rude, but he won't be missed in Toronto. He was probably going to be the 7th D man, or worse. And he isn't about to be claimed, either. At almost a Million and a half cap-hit, you can get better guys still as UFAs than that. Franson, Kindl, Jokipaka, Polak.

At best, Marchenko was 8th on the Leafs depth chart right now. And that's even if they don't make any other moves (like re-signing Polak, when he's healthy). So, there's a very real chance that he was either going to rot in the press box this year, or even get sent down to the AHL.

So, this seems like a mutually beneficial arrangement. Marchenko clears waivers, he and the Leafs mutually agree to terminate his contract, and then Marchenko can go home to play in the KHL instead of either not playing at all, or riding the bus in the AHL. The Leafs meanwhile, clear a little bit of cap space and a contract slot.
