It’s hilarious how ppl pretend like Edler is better than Tanev when both are healthy.
Act like? The proven results so he is and always has been. Tanev doesn’t make up for the lack of offence between the two with his defensive game anymore or ever. Tanev is quite mediocre lately if not totally utter shit.

Anybody hear anything about contract talks? This has gone really quiet.
Nothing. Seems like the Canucks are holding firm that any desire to add year 3 would mean it would be unprotected while Edler wants that third year protected. So not really the term that is the issue it’s the protection.

Thats what Ive heard too. I dont get why the protection is an issue, just cant see Seattle taking a 35 year old defenseman on his last year or two.
He wouldnt waive at the TDL(allegedly) and wants expansion draft protection so the team has to lose a younger player.

Because Edler would want a clause as protection (given that the GM has asked vets on the team to waive their NTCs before you would understand why such a tenured vet would demand such a clause). With such a clause the Canucks *HAVE* to protect him (they have no choice) according to the expansion draft rules.

Understood. But does he need protection? Is Seattle going to waste a roster spot on a dman with 1-2 years left?

The concern isn't whether Edler would be chosen in the expansion draft.

The probem is that the Canucks have a limited number of protection slots and if they give Edler a nmc, they have to use one of those slots on him, meaning a younger player goes unprotected and possibly selected.

Only reason Edler scores more is because he plays on the top pp and gets easy points. The sad thing is that if you our Hutton or Stecher there in place of him, the pp would be better.

No

When Edler was hurt, they used Pouliot, Hutton and Stecher all on the 1st unit at times. None of them did a good job. Pp is proven to be better with Edler.

There is a reason from 2011 to now. 4 different coaches has Used Edler on the 1st unit. AV, Torts, Willy and Green. There has to be a reason for that. The reason he is the best option out of everybody.

I do have good news if you are not a fan of Edler. Most likely Hughes will take his spot next year on the 1st unit.

If Edler just wants the "protection" why not just make it yearly deal with player options? He lets Seattle or anybody else know he will not pick up said option if moved and won't report if traded?

There are no option deals in hockey contracts. You are signed for x seasons and that's it, unless bought out, retired, or contract terminated somehow (league-approved). You would have to complete your contract on your new team.

Hell
He's going to re-sign, it's going to be interesting to see how badly Edler's agent schools Benning here.

I don’t care much about his cap hit, $6-7 mill wouldn’t be the end of the world. It’s if he wants 3 years with a NMC that would screw us for the expansion draft. 2 years or bust.

Hutton was great during his short time on the PP.

Hutton had a stretch where his shot had eyes. Overall he is a net negative influence on PP performance; Edler is much better. Next year Hughes should be running PP1 with Edler on PP2 and nobody else should get a sniff except for injury fill-in.

Can't give Edler a NMC. If he walks as a result, so be it.
Beginning to seriously wonder if Edler and the Canucks will reach a deal. If he's looking for anything more than three years with a NMC, then the Canucks are better off just to walk.

I'd much rather see them put their money into guys like Gardiner or Myers who are younger and can both play power-play minutes.
