How often does a guy score 10 more goals than Mario Lemieux???
I'd say it's pretty historic. :thumbu:

P.S. I'll be at the Caps/Knights game on Monday and I'm thinking he'll get his 700th (10 more than Mario) in the 3rd...and an empty netter as well just to further annoy you.

Something that’s only been done by 7 players in the entire 102 year history of the league is not historic...

I think it's only historic for that guy if it happens to someone on the penguins.

That's not true. When he becomes # 7, 6, 5, 4, 3 goal scorer all time you could argue that's historic or every goal after 700. Why just 700? I feel like we are watering down the word, historic. Lets wait and see if he passes Gretzky then call it historic.

getting to 700 is absolutely historic, only 7 people have ever done it, and the vast majority of them, were on fumes when they finally crossed it. what Ovi is doing is ridiculous. greaest goal scorer of his generation, and imo top 5 ever. Gretzky fell off dramatically after 30, and his back injury compounded things. if gretzky had stayed healthy in his 30s he quite likely tops 1000 goals and 3000 points. imo there is no debate between Crosby and ovi- ovi is better.

yeah, if no Back injury we aren't even talking about Alex catching him because he wouldn't. BUT it's like people on here say, no would of should have could haves.. it's about what you did do. I still don't think he gets to 894, but we'll see.

yes, he has a shot, if he stays healthy and doesn't suddenly fall off a cliff. that sudden decline seems to happen in the late 30s, for the most part, see Jordan with the Wizards or Favre with the Vikings in 2010, or Manning with Denver in 2015. Ovi had been incredibly durable in his career, but as they say Father time is undefeated. Ovehchin has 137 goals on the next active player (Marleau with 561) and 242 on Crosby. Stamkos has 419. so realistically if ovi doesn't pass Gretzky it aint going to happen for a VERY long time.

It'll be historic if he gets 50 this season, what with that tying the record for 50 goal seasons, and surpassing 700 is historic in every sense of the word. Just as goal 800 will be historic, even though he won't pass anyone with that tally. Your belittlement of these accomplishments doesn't actually cheapen these accomplishments. Your views have no basis in reality, and they have no impact upon it. Bury your head in the sand. No one cares.

    Ovechkin career vs Arizona/Phoenix: 19 games-8 goals.
Last 5 vs Coyotes: 2 goals
    11/11/19- 0 (Raanta)
    12/6/18- 1 (Empty Net)
    11/11/18- 0 (Kuemper)
    12/22/17- 0 (Wedgewood)
    11/6/17- 1 PP (Wedgewood)

Career vs Raanta: 3 1/3 games-1 PP goal (1/17/16 NYR)
Career vs Kuemper: 2 games-1 PP goal (2/26/16 MIN)

Ovechkin has 1 multi goal game vs the Coyotes, his first game vs Phoenix was at the Glendale Arena 1/16/06. His first goal was a PP, the second was at Even Strength...which was the last time Ovechkin scored 5×5 ES vs the Coyotes.

Ovechkin is currently on a 3 game goal-less drought, his 5th of the season; he hasn't gone 4 consecutive without a goal this season.

Come on now, even the chase to 700 couldn’t get the Coyotes in national television. ;)

The pressure is getting to Ovi big time. Feels like the #700 will never come.

GOAT goalscorer and winger imo. Put Ovi up against 80's goalies and defense and he cracks 100 in a season or 2.

It's why you play the games...............
2 lockouts likely robbed ovi of another 30 60 goals. We have no other way of comparing players. I only saw gretzky in his 30s (kid in the 80s). Was he a better player then ovi? Eye test, yes but Gretzky also played when the 20 30 goal scorers of today were getting 50. Ovi has been without a doubt the best goal scorer of his generation. No questioning it. Him getting to 700 especially when so many on here say he can only stand in 1 spot to score now is amazing. Teams know exactly what's going to happen and they cant stop it. We are watching something special.

Absolutely no pressure on ovi other then having it over with. Its inevitable with 2 to go. Really think hes more concerned with his teams lackluster play of late and getting back in the playoffs. Sportswriters dream up that pressure crap

Ovi isn’t really feeling the pressure, if you watch the games lately he’s getting tons of good shots off there have just been some great saves and iron involved as well

Anyone who thinks Ovechkin is better than Crosby is insane. The question was settled a long time ago. If you asked 31 NHL GMs who they would pick, 30 wouldn’t hesitate to pick Sid & the 31st team would sweat it out before deciding. Sid is right now 5th GOAT.

Crosby is no where near 5th all time. Proof positive a player can be great and insanely overrated at the same time.

yeah he is. He’s dominated this era & has lead his teams to 5 championships (3 Cups, 2 Gold Medals). He’s been the face of the NHL the entire time. The only repeat winner of the Conn Smythe in the salary cap era. His game is a 200 foot bust-your-ass every shift mentality. He could legitimately challenge for both the Art Ross & Selke Trophies with his play. 5th GOAT.

I don't consider him to be, but you know how the hockey media is. Malkin not top 100, but Crosby as top 5...

Pretty sure Gretzky played in a lockout season as well. 1995 was it? Plus a back surgery season that he missed half the games. Ovi has been lucky with injuries so far in his career. And I don't doubt Ovi is probably the best goal scorer of all time, but the magic number is still 894.

yeah doesn't seem to be. This is Ovi's career though. 10 games with 20 goals then a bit of a break. Always fairly up and down. That said, still an entire 3rd period to go, and we know that if the Caps are up late (like they usually are), he'll get a chance at some empty netters.

And I don't even count that Ovechkin is like 100500+ times more popular in say China and India with their crazy numbers of people.

Your opinion is an opinion of minority.
