Great career in Canucks colours, great start to his career…the middle not so much, near the end played like a grizzled vet.

He outlasted Ohlund, Jovanovski and Salo.
It was fun while it lasted, peace out Edler.

2011 is officially shut, no one from that team is on here anymore.

I was hoping for one more year with us, and getting that damn 100th goal!

Some posters have mentioned that Eddy would quietly get back at an opponent who cheap-shotted a teammate. I can't help but wonder if Eddy signed a one year deal with a non-contending divisional rival, as a slap in the face for Tanev's treatment last year. Probably not. Eddy has more class than I have. ;)

Thanks for being a great Canuck. All the best in L.A., but please be kind to your former teammates.

The last days of the grizzled warrior. Wish we could have given him a better send-off than this. No idea why he'd pick LA (well okay, one idea), but wish him well.

Goes out franchise leader for dmen in games played, goals, assists, points...I forget anything?

I raise my glass to you, Eddie.

Last of the Mohicanucks.

One of the best Canucks defencemen ever. My favorite memory of him is when he hit everything in the Kings series( the first one that we actually want to remember)

The 2010 series against LA was the best he ever played. He was an absolute beast in that series. It was like he was never off the ice.

I think he went for money which is totally fine with me. He is looking out for the long term of when his playing days are over. I’m gonna cheer him on in l.a.

Rick D said the canucks basically made the same offer

He just wanted a change of scenery

Going to miss Edler. My best memory, like many others here is that flying hit in Doughty. I was in a seedy pub below the New West sky train station called 57 below. We watched the playoff game there after one of my undergrad biology courses at Douglas college, and I distinctly remember six of us drinking 14 pitchers that night.

Good for Edler. Best of luck with all your future endeavours.

This team has an awful history of retaining their best defenseman when they get older... Especially when they want to stay.

Jovo, Ohlund, Salo, Tanev, and Edler should have all retired as Canucks.

Kinda bummed that he couldn't just retire as a lifetime Canuck. It really should've been that way. Such a story, from the fabled draft table tales, to becoming a core member of the team for all those years and right through nearly winning the franchise's first Stanley Cup. Always really liked him, on and off the ice. Just a quiet professional.

Unfortunately, i guess the time had come. I can't help but wonder if part of it was the Sedins encouraging him to go out and see what it's like on the outside...after they never really got the chance.

Saddest thing might be that realistically, if Edler could somehow play his off side without looking utterly discombobulated, i can't see any reason he wouldn't have still been a Canuck and retired that way. Just too hard to fit in and justify as a Left D exclusively on this roster right now. An Edler who could play his off side would've been plenty welcome to stay for his last couple years imo. But i guess in some ways, leaving on such an idiosyncratic technicality would be pretty on-brand for Edler.

One of my All-time favorites...

Played some his best defensive hockey the last couple years.. was a minute munching beast for us in the dzone and vs the the top lines.

Never seen such a good player be so under appreciated... Good luck in LA... SPF it up... sun can be rough on Swedish skin...

We've butted heads in the past.

Here we agree 110%.

I so wish he could have retired a Canuck.

Edler really did have one of the most "underrated", and often "underappreciated" careers imaginable, for a defenceman who at his peak...was such an absolute stud. It's funny thinking back, i find even myself kind of guilty of having almost taken him for granted a lot of the time. Almost like a bonus part of the package deal with the Swedes and the Sedins...when in reality, he was a darn good player in his own right.

He could have, and he would still be one of our best defencemen, but Benning is happy to get rid of "Gillis players".

He was the last players from the 2011 run, as with everything else it’s run it’s course.

His time was over here, wish him the best.

It ain’t about getting rid of “Gillis players”, he said he needed a change of scenery.

Which is strange because for 3-4 years now we didn’t trade him because he didn’t want to leave…wonder what changed his mind?

Maybe a 1) massively botched pandemic or 2) management letting all his friends go the previous offseason and/or 3) lost faith in the team after another failed year. Those are all very good reasons individually and they most definitely all contributed.

Had a nice career here, but he's fallen off a cliff. All he's good for now, is hitting in the corners and blocking shots on the pk. He's gotten slow, and doesn't handle the puck very well anymore. Looking forward to his return for the tribute video.

Edler scored his franchise leading goal against L.A.

They don’t make it like him anymore. hitting is essentially out of the league and his type of defense man doesn’t exist anymore. The knee surgery ruined his speed and he was never the same. Basically was Matthias Ohlund 2.0.

Remember when he was starting out and for there was a game where it went to extra shooters for the shootout and they picked Edler. We really saw his offensive creativeness and he became a shootout specialist.

Under appreciated but I’m sure someone can make a tribute of all Hits. Anytime the team needed a spark, you’d see Edler flying out there with a game breaking hit.

Lots of people are saying that it’s because the lack of good defense man here that Edler is the best Canuck all time. You have to understand that he was very good during his early years which had him being compared to a young Nicky Lidstrom. Obviously he didn’t get there but at his peak, there wasn’t anyone in Canucks history that was better. clearly not one of the most dynamic defense man and albeit for a short time, he could shut down players and still put up 40/50 points .
