Losing Bagnall, and Klesla deciding not to report really hurt their chances. They played tough against a good team. Hopefully Murray tries to turn them into a contender this offseason.

It will help that Murray views that as something important for the organization and it will be a focus. Darcy really didn't focus on it.

‏@kevinoDandC - Last two seasons the #Amerks were swept out in first round. This series went distance and there wasn't a big difference between the two teams. But is it really different? Said #Amerks Phil Varone: "It is and it isn't. You can't sugar-coat it, we still lost."

‏@kevinoDandC - #Amerks Brayden Irwin after series-ending 4-2 loss -
"It's disappointing. I think we had a pretty special team and that's what really hurts."

@kevinoDandC - #Amerks Chad Ruhwedel after 4-2 loss to Wolves in Game #5 -
"Obviously it's a tough loss. It's hard to swallow right now."

@kevinoDandC - #Amerks Chadd Cassidy - on the chance to build on 2-1 lead in 2nd -
"We really pushed and their goaltender saved the game for them," coach Chadd Cassidy said.

@kevinoDandC - The #Amerks streak of losing 6 straight Calder Cup playoff series is 2nd longest in league history.
The #Amerks are a long way from the AHL record for consecutive playoff series losses - 10 - set by Springfield Indians between 1937 and 1955.

Rochester Americans Eliminated By Chicago Wolves - Kevin Oklobzija - DemocratandChronicle.com - Sunday, May 4.

The Rochester Americans found out that, regardless of how it happens, playoff losing really stinks. In each of the past two seasons, the Amerks were swept out of the Calder Cup playoffs in the first round by a dominant Toronto Marlies team, dropping all three games each spring. This season the Amerks extended the best-of-five first-round series to the limit, only to end up in the same place: the American Hockey League's discard pile.

Late second-period power-play goals by Brent Regner and Dmitrij Jaskin gave the Chicago Wolves the lead and they held off the Amerks the rest of the way, winning 4-2 on Sunday evening at All-State Arena. So is it really any different than 2012 or 2013? "It is and it isn't," third-year center Phil Varone said. "You can't sugarcoat it; we still lost. Nobody's satisfied - at least I hope not."

Progress For The Amerks? Yes - Enough? Hardly - Kevin Oklobzija - Hockey Zone - DemocratandChronicle.com - Sunday, May 4.

There was a time when May in Rochester meant hockey. Hockey weather? 80 and sunny. And now? It's been so long since the Amerks won a Calder Cup, a generation of fans has no idea what the trophy even looks like. Yes, 1996 was a long time ago. So, too, was 2005. That's the last time the Amerks even won a playoff series. That's a drought. The streak for consecutive playoff-series losses has now hit six, which is the second-longest futility streak in AHL history. For the Amerks sake, at least the record is still a long way away: 10, by the Springfield Indians between 1937 and 1955.

Granted, this isn't the old AHL, with 13 or 15 or 18 teams. A 30-team league using a template that assures roster spots for nearly each and every draft pick in many ways provides parity for the American Hockey League. In a 30-team league, it's very difficult (impossible?) for a team to go deep in the playoffs every. So you won't ever see a run like the Amerks had for two decades: Trips to the Calder Cup finals in 1983, '84, '87, '90, '91, '93, '96, '99 and 2000. That's borderline dynastic, really. Nine trips to the finals in 18 seasons, with three championships.

Amerks Season Ends - 4-2 Loss To Wolves - Game #5 - Amerks.com - Sunday, May 4.

A pair of second-period power-play goals just 2:05 apart proved to be the difference maker as the Chicago Wolves erased a 2-1 deficit and claimed a 4-2 win over the Rochester Americans in Game #5 of the Western Conference Quarterfinals at Allstate Arena. The Wolves win the best-of-five series 3-2 and eliminate the Amerks from the 2014 Calder Cup Playoffs.

Luke Adam (1+1) and Phil Varone (0+2) led the way offensively with two-point nights while Brayden Irwin also found the back of the net with his third goal of the series. Rookie defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen finished with an assist and Andrey Makarov, who appeared in all five playoff games for Rochester, closed out the postseason with 32 saves on 35 shots.

Dmitrij Jaskin paced Chicago with a goal and an assist while Shane Harper and Brent Regner each tallied for the second time of the series before Taylor Chorney netted the series-clinching goal with an empty-netter in the final minute of regulation. Reigning AHL Goalie of the Year Jake Allen made 21 saves in the win, cementing the Wolves’ second-round meeting against the three-time North Division champion Toronto Marlies. (LaxSabre - the other Western Conference second-round meeting will have Texas Stars vs defending AHL Champions - Grand Rapids Griffins.)

Wolves Survive - Advance To Round Two - The AHL.com - Sunday, May 4.

The Chicago Wolves earned the final spot in the second round of the 2014 Calder Cup Playoffs with a 4-2 victory over the Rochester Americans in Game #5 of their Western Conference quarterfinal series at Allstate Arena on Sunday afternoon. The Wolves move on to meet the Toronto Marlies in one Western Conference semifinal. The regular-season champion Texas Stars face the defending Calder Cup champion Grand Rapids Griffins in the other Western Conference semifinal. (LaxSabre - the Texas-Grand Rapids series starts on Thursday, May 9 and Chicago-Toronto series starts on Friday, May 10.)

Chicago struck early in Game #5 with Shane Harper scoring just 2:02 into the contest off a nice return pass from Sebastian Wannstrom. Rochester tied things up with 4:39 to play before the first intermission when Brayden Irwin one-timed home a feed from Luke Adam for his third goal in the last two games. Adam then picked up his second goal of the series 2:01 into the second period to put the Amerks in front, 2-1. The goal was Rochester's second power-play goal of the afternoon and eighth of the series.

But the Wolves grabbed the lead back with two power-play goals of their own in the last three minutes of the period. After a wild scramble in front of the Amerks net, the puck came out to Brent Regner and he blasted it home to tie the score with 2:32 remaining. Then, Dmitrij Jaskin camped out in front and redirected a pass from Keith Aucoin past Andrey Makarov with 26.8 seconds to go, and the Wolves were up 3-2 after 40 minutes. Chicago allowed just seven shots in the third period with Rochester pressing to tie and survived a late Amerks power play before Taylor Chorney iced the victory with an empty-net goal off a terrific individual effort at 18:59.

Jake Allen, who was lifted from a start in Game #4 for the first time since Oct. 12, 2012, bounced back with the season on the line and stopped 21 of 23 shots for the win. Andrey Makarov made 32 saves on 35 shots for Rochester.

If you had told me in early-March that the Amerks would've started a goaltender who was in the ECHL and the big three vets (Porter, Zigomanis, and Tardif) would've given them zero goals in the playoffs, I would've figured the Amerks were out in three games. Yet those things did happen, and they should've won the series.

Next year will be a big one for Murray and the Amerks. He has to help them build a serious AHL contender. Nobody can predict injuries to two top-6 players and your top goaltender, but here's hoping they can win at least a couple series next year.

The Amerks are approaching the AHL record for most series losses in a row with 6. The record is 10, but that was from the 30's-50's. In the modern AHL era, this is as bad as it gets.

I really didn't like this team this year. Loads of talent, never even approached it's potential, save for a couple games here and there. Hoping for a mostly new team from Murray.
