People think African American is the right phrase, but don't know what to call black people from outside the States.

Yep, pretty odd to watch. How would an American describe Oduya or Owuya, two Swedish guys.

In Canada, describing someone as a "black" person isn't considered awkward or offensive.

It's a descriptive term, like saying "blond" or "short".

Yes, but how many left-handed, right-shooting, forward thinking, back woodsmen are in the NHL that are of African descent, with more than 3 sisters, but only 1 brother, who also played in the NHL, and was married to the daughter of a GM, who won a Stanley Cup as a player, and a GM, but not as a coach? I mean, as long as we continue to put people in to classifications and boxes, let's go all the way..
