Makar is a rare case of a player being excellent and legit top 5 at his position and crazy overrated at the same time.

His improvisational ability and tool set is unmatched, but he's average at best defensively and honestly is not as efficient as the other 2.

He’s good defensively. One -5 game against Washington doesn’t change what he’s proved his entire NHL career in his own zone.

But, yes, a guy who is 117 games into his career and is 5th all time in defence points per game is crazy overrated.

How about winning the Norris his second year accomplishing a feat nobody aside from Orr has done

His entire NHL career has shown that hes gone from a train wreck in his rookie season to adequate at best in his own end. Has nothing to do with the -5 he took in Washington, those types of games happen to everyone.

Hes an excellent offensive player. Hes easily the weakest defensive player of the 3 players mentioned here by a significant margin.

A train wreck? That’s never been the case.

Good lord, this is embarrassing. Judging from your comments you’ve barely watched the Avalanche play. Not really much point in furthering this discussion.

Lol okay biased Avs fan. Strong retort.

I've seen him a ton btw. He was awful defensively in his rookie season and hes improved since then, but he still isn't good.

Lots of bad takes around here , this is easily the worst! Makar has never been bad defensively. Please show some proof or is it just your opinion

I just love how engaged Makar is night in and night out.

1. Makar
2. Heiskanen
3. Fox

Sucks that I’ve got Fox down last, really would love any of these players on the Sens.

East Coast bias played a large role in Fox's Norris. I strongly believe had Makar been on NYR and Fox on COL, the vote would not have been nearly as close in favor of the NYR player. Fox benefitted from a shortened season and Makar missing 10 games was an abnormally large portion of the season last year. Makar was the more impactful player in games he did play. Had he played 70 games and Fox 82, Makar would have run away with the Norris (and the points lead for Dmen). For those of you who don't think East Coast bias is a real thing, consider who won the Hart in 2018.

And for everyone arguing Makar benefits from playing for a better team, look at what he's done with the Avs missing Mackinnon and playing an entire line of AHL players all November. Pretty unbelievable to see a Dman essentially step up and replace a No. 1 center's production. Makar is a primary reason the Avs are so dominant more than he is a beneficiary of a stacked roster.

Heiskanen has been just as good if not better than McAvoy offensively. These 4 are clearly the top of the new age of defenseman but you can't not include Heiskanen while including McAvoy in the discussion.

Makar and Fox have clearly proven to be the top-2 so far, while Heiskanen and McAvoy have rotated as the third, and we will see where it goes from there.

Bingo, and this shit is gonna change every year as they continue to grow.

I'll admit that 15 years from now that Fox is looking like he will age the best because he doesn't rely on his physical tools, but who the hell knows.

Makar, and it's not close
I think the poll is for who you would take first not last. But otherwise you are correct.

East Coast bias played a large role in Fox's Norris.
Disagree here, having the best on ice performance for a D man last year played a large role in Fox's Norris.

Doesn't matter that Makar was hurt, or Hedman had the pedigree, or who you would take 1oA in the all-NHL D Man draft; Fox won because his ON ICE play was the best last year. Both "eye test", basic and advanced analytics said so.

If Makar didn't get hurt would he have had more points? Yes, but he got hurt, and didn't have more points. If Makar was in a tougher division (East Coast Bias?) would his stats have been more impressive last year? Same for Hedman? Sure, but they weren't.

Ultimately Fox won because last season he was the most impactful player at his position (and most nights, any position) night in and night out. The nerds have written about this in abundance.

Fans, and this board especially, will ALWAYS go for a Makar over Fox (anti East Coast bias? lol) and if the Avs can raise one up, forget it it will be set in stone in their minds. But I would bet a Fox wins a Conn Smythe over a Makar if either are so blessed to get to that point.

Makar will end up with more points if he stays healthy no doubt.

Wow, because of a 16 games sample size with a /60 stat? You should question any metric that shows Makar is subpar offensively. Makar was 5th in the league last year in xGF/60.

When you are dealing with one of the most skilled finishers in the game, just ignore xGF and use actual goal results. We all know Makar is going to outperform his xGF so don't bother with it (whether it is top tier or not).

Like what is Ovechkin's xGF/60? Should we even care? No.
