We all know our cap situation so who are some players that would obviously add skill to the team that would not cost an arm and a leg cap or trade wise? We've seen guys like Domi, D. Strome, etc. make significant impacts on their new teams after fighting it for their old clubs, we could really use a player or two like that. Here are some candidates that the Oilers GM should be looking at IMO:

Forwards

UFA's

Richard Panik 65gp. 13-18-31 current AAV $2.8 million UFA
Joonas Donskoi 71gp. 14-40-34 current AAV $1.9 million UFA
Brett Connolly 71gp. 19-20-39 current AAV $1.5 million UFA
Brandon Tanev 70gp. 13-12-25 current AAV $1.15 million UFA
Alex Chiasson 61gp. 20-12-32 current AAV $0.65 million UFA, highest AAV to date $1.2 million
Brandon Pirri 27gp. 11-5-16 current AAV $0.65 million UFA, highest AAV to date $1.1 million
Tyler Ennis 44gp. 12-5-17 current AAV $0.65 million UFA

Trade Targets
Anthony Duclair 63gp. 13-11-24 current AAV $0.65 million RFA
Josh Ho-Sang (AHL) 45gp. 7-30-37 current AAV $1.076 million RFA
Andre Burakovsky 65gp. 11-12-23 current AAV $3.0 million RFA Arbitration eligible
Mattias Janmark 70gp. 6-16-22 current AAV $2.3 million RFA Arbitration eligible
Connor Brown 70gp. 6-18-24 current AAV $2.1 million Signed through '19-20 then RFA Arbitration eligible
Oliver Bjorkstrand 65gp. 14-11-25 current AAV $2.5 million Signed through '20-21 then RFA Arbitration eligible

Who would you add to this list? Which players on defense might you be looking at?

Fippula with 15g 14a in 68 games seems like a perfect 3C. Plays 3rd most time per game on the 10th best PK in the league.

2.75mil this year, so not sure what he'd look for next year. However I'm really not sure what else there is for 3C that can PK.

Took a look on Pirri, just over a month ago the story was why didn't anyone give him a shot. Now the guy has 3g 0a in 16 games. What a jekyl and hyde player

He'll be 35 in a handful of days. Last thing we need is for him to "Letestu" or "Brodziak" us.

As for Pirri, the guy has always had a + shot. Whether you roll him on the 4th line at ES or the top line, he can score. IMO we need guys that can put the puck in the net and hes done it very well at every level except 1.

Honestly if it's one year even at 2mil I don't really care. It's when you start giving guys multi year deals for no reason. I mean why did Brodziak need multi-years? The guys end game was to come back home to play, so give him one year.

Marcus Johansson would be a guy to look into. His injuries over the last couple years are a concern. But I think that's why he could come at a discount. I dont know enough about his injuries to know if hes just injury prone or if they are all flukes. His skill would definately be a nice add.

Brett Connoly as a UFA, although I'm sure he's going to cost around 3M per. Blake Coleman and Josh Anderson through trade. Both make under 2M per and would really fill out the top 9 nicely. Anderson would cost a lot though.

I would look at Nichushkin, whose value is almost nothing at this point and badly, badly needs a change of scenery. He has a minus shot, but he's fantastic at gaining the zone and arguably works best with players who crash the net.

When we stack our top six, we don't have any remaining forwards who excel at gaining the zone. None of those forwards excel at getting open to get their shots off either. I would love to have a third line like Burakovsky (puck carrier), Janmark (speedy two-way) and Bjorkstrand (clever shooter) to push out Rieder, Cave and Rattie. I expect Puljujarvi to be moved, and I don't see a quality top six winger being available to us for anything reasonable.f

For an example:
Draisaitl-McDavid-Gagner (lol)
Khaira-RNH-Chiasson
Burakovsky-Janmark-Bjorkstrand
Lucic-Brodziak-Kassian
Cave, Currie

Defence
Tim Heed is very similar to Joel Persson, but a few years older. Were we to acquire him, we'd be getting someone who is proven in the NHL but at the expense of Persson...who may be a better talent.

Connolly is a better version of Chiasson.

I am sure that the Devils would love to keep Coleman to round out their roster, and Anderson is coveted. I'm not sure how we could acquire the latter without making another hole in our forwards corps and losing prospect depth.

I really like Connolly and Tanev in FA. Would be fairly cheap but good players that know their role and contribute well.

Connolly - 5 years x 3.75m
Tanev - 3 years x 2.5m

If we go the trade route I really like Bjorkstrand. He obviously has a lot of skill and is yet to show his goal scoring ability at the NHL level. I'd also call up the Rangers and ask if Lias Andersson would be available. Maybe Pulju + 3rd for Andersson + 5th. Andersson hasn't worked out there like Pulju hasn't here. I think he could be like Nuge v2 for us and really break out playing on the wing with Leon on the 2nd line. Perlini is also interesting. Big, skates well, can score goals. He's already scored 17 goals before, then had a bad season, was traded and has been bad for the new team. He would be really cheap (3rd rounder prob) and could be a great winger for Connor.

5 years is a lot.
I'd offer 2-3 years @ 3=3.2 million, max

That deal would get beat in a heartbeat.

He's only 26 so 5 years brings the AAV down but only takes him until he is 31.

Other guys with his production are older and either command and AAV of 4.5-5m for 3-4 years or around 6 years of term.

The cap has went up a lot and will go up even more this summer. Getting a ~20 goal + 45 point scorer for 3.75m is a very good deal.

What's holding him back from the NHL? Skating? He's dummying the AHL this season and has put up some numbers in the NHL in short stints. Local kid to boot.

I don’t know but I’d say probably skating as size isn’t the detriment, not that size is an issue these days.

@Jet Walters was reported Tanev is going to probably be offered $3.5 M and multiple years. Too rich for a 3rd 4th liner on the Oilers who need more premium scoring in the top 6 than more cash wasted in the bottom 6.

A couple of those 'trade targets' are likely to go untendered. I'd wager that Burakovsky hits UFA this summer.
