The Thunderbirds select defenseman Billy Coutu, the 10-year partner of Sprague Cleghorn. On the Canadiens blueline he won the Stanley Cup in 1924 and three other times went to the Finals, in the 1919 flu epidemic and in 1917 and 1925 against PCHA teams. Less penalized than Cleghorn, Coutu only once was top-3 in the NHL in PIMs while with the Habs. A hard-working, longstanding Hab, "Beaver" Coutu captained the Canadiens for the 1925-26 season. The following season the 34-year-old veteran was traded to Boston, where a preseason hit on Shore into the boards almost cost Eddie his ear and a Stanley Cup playoff game later that season saw Coutu assault a referee. He received a so-called "lifetime" ban that lasted only two years before it was overturned and four years after that Coutu was fully reinstated as NHL-eligible-to-play on the insistence of Leo Dandurand based on the claims of other players that Bruins coach Art Ross had put a bounty on the ref's head that night in anger and that Billy had gone out and done the deed and in fact collected the reward. Often characterized as some sort of psycho, in reality he seems to have been more of a loyal footsoldier who partnered with a more violent partner in Cleghorn and simply did what was par for the course in early era hockey, in the tradition of the Ottawa Silver Seven, where physicality was used to get whatever edge one can on the ice. Without doubt, Coutu was on the ice consistently on a top pairing for a decade of hockey history. Coutu is ranked 96th in Ken Campbell's book, Habs Heroes: The Greatest Canadiens Ever From 1 to 100.

The Thunderbirds select Art Moore, the rough-and-tumble defenseman who played coverpoint in front of point Harvey Pulford for the 1903-1906 dynasty Ottawa Silver Seven. He scored a Stanley-cup winning goal and was a league all-star in 1905, the same year the Montreal Gazette lists him on the all-star team of hockey. He also captained the Ottawa Silver Seven in 1906 and the Ottawa Citizen reported fans had anxiety over the team's chances without Moore when he was injured the following season. His remarkable speed on the football field shows his considerable lower body strength.

Arthur_%22Art%22_Moore.jpg

The Regina Standard said:
Arthur Moore is this year playing point for the team and doing better work than he formerly performed at cover. Cool, accurate lifting is his forte, but Moore is likewise a very dangerous man for opposing forwards to cope with. He is probably the fastest man with the Rough Riders and a few year ago was a defense player for the Capitals lacrosse team.

Montreal Gazette said:
Perhaps the defense of the Ottawa Stanley Cup holders is the best on the ice today,... Pulford, point, and Moore, cover-point. Both strapping big men, they do not use boarding school methods to handle the enemy as it sweeps upon them… Moore can also accomplish a little body-checking on occasion. He, too, is no gentle lamb, and many a forward can show black and blue marks decorating his anatomy to prove it. But they both played fine hockey, lifting the puck well, and are effective working at all times. A formidable pair.

... an all-around athlete, playing football for the Ottawa Rough Riders, lacrosse for a Montreal team and rowing with the Ottawa Rowing Club.

Mr. Moore was a defenceman, before that word was even coined. He is described as tough, "stay-at-home," a husky presence in his own end who could deliver punishing checks. He scored a goal in the 1904 Cup at the Aberdeen Pavilion.

"He was on the first professional hockey team in Ottawa," said Paul Kitchen, a hockey historian and author of the soon-to-be released Win, Tie or Wrangle, The Inside Story of the Old Ottawa Senators.

It wasn't just a different era, it was a different world. Games were played on natural ice, salaries were in the $750 range (some of the citizenry were scandalized that players were paid anything to play a game), and vicious stickwork was common.

"A saturnalia of butchery," is how one Montreal newspaper vividly described one Ottawa-Montreal game.

Here is a memorable impression from an opposing player, as recounted by Jim McAuley in The Ottawa Sports Book. "The Ottawa defence didn't care whether or not a goal was scored; they just walloped to teach you better manners during the next attack."

The old-time athletes did not have the advantages of today's players in terms of equipment, training, diet, coaching or facilities, said Mr. Kitchen.

And they lived here year-round, mixing with regular folk on the street, not cruising by in Hummers.

"These guys were heroes," said hockey author Don Reddick. "I mean, the governor general went to their games. Everybody in town knew their names."

"He was as tough as nails on the ice,..."

….
Herewith is listed the first all-star team in major hockey, drawn from the players of the Eastern Canada Hockey Association which, though an amateur league, was the major loop of the era. It is listed as follows:
Goal: Paddy Moran, Quebec Bulldogs
Point: Harvey Pulford, Ottawa
Cover point: Art Moore, Ottawa
Rover: Russell Bowie. Victorias
Centre: Frank McGee, Ottawa
Left wing: Blair Russell, Victorias

Bykov and Khomutov in particular had incredible chemistry together. They played a smooth, uninterrupted style of game. Their hockey truly was beautiful hockey, an absolute joy to watch. Their criss-crossing skating with dazzling passing displays dizzied the best of defenses and wore down the opponents. The only thing more nimble than their feet was their hands.

I'll select Morris Lukowich, LW

Rob Scuderi selected him last year and he proved to be an excellent pick when all was said and done - an elite glue guy for a scoring line. Eventually I will build on last year's bio.

And now to reveal my evil plan: I had to spend my first two picks on the two guys who I think are the best suited to be complementary scoring line wingers: Lukowich on the left side, and Harris on either side. It's hard, if not impossible, to get guys who provide physicality/defense/board work/aggression but can actually play on a scoring line without wrecking its offensive potential. In these two, I believe I have found the best. This is a strategy that worked for me last year and I hope for a repeat.

I missed out on two of the best offensive centers but it looks like I won't have a problem ending up with two in the same skill neighbourhood as the ones already taken. Ditto offensive wingers. But you guys? You're going to have trouble filling out your lines with players complementary guys. Some of you will be able to manage. Some won't. there just aren't enough of the right guys out there.

Line building in the AAA is hard, and I didn't want that hassle so I got the hard part out of the way first.

With Pick 16 of the 2014 AAA the Spurs pick a guy their GM selected in 2011 in Left Winger Tony Mckegney.

TonyMaC1.jpg

A 4 time 30 goal scorer Mckegney brings offense to our 1st line.

With Pick 17 of the 2014 AAA the Spurs start off their defense with defenseman Dave Maloney.

Dave-Maloney.jpg

Maloney was a good 2 way defenseman during his career with 317 points in 657 games and 1154 penalty minutes.

Next has been pmed.

I think I'll grab Alexei Zhamnov, C.

Zhamnov is a guy who I've always been pretty complementary of at the times he was selected. Last year I even questioned what my own Nedved had on him when Nedved topped him in all-star voting. Season-to-season, he was really consistent offensively. His peak seasons are just as good as modern NHL comparables Lang, Larouche and Nedved, but even in his 11th best season he was earning a vsx score of 51 (and in just 58 games). Those other three have 11th best seasons of 33, 27, and 33, for comparison's sake - basically meaningless.

Zhamnov was also a captain for a while and killed a decent amount of penalties.
