Leafs need up add toughness, a couple of defenders and upgrade their bottom 6 before addressing their backup goalie. Backup goalies don’t play in the playoffs in game 7 against Boston.
A competent backup goalie can at least string together a few wins when called upon to start, thus giving the Leafs those extra points needed so that just in case they DO make it to Game 7 again, that game is played on home ice for once.
Garrett Sparks' inability last year to be more than a pylon in goalie clothes, cost the Leafs some valuable points that ended up biting them in the ass last season and was arguably the difference in finishing third behind Boston instead of second.
For whatever reason, Kyle Dubas opted to go for another shaky backup this time around, and the (very) subpar results shouldn't be surprising to anyone.
Dubas seems unwilling/unable to properly fix this backup goalie issue, and it may very well cost his team yet
another chance to win their first playoff round in fifteen years.
Leafs need a back up to make sure we get to game 7 against Boston.
Andersen has been stellar but Hutch has helped us collect 1 of 10 pts.
Exactly. Right there, 9 points down the drain because Hutchinson isn't doing the job.
Of course, this could partly be on Babcock and his baffling inability to rotate goalies in back-to-back games. Andersen always gets first game and Hutch gets the second so he's at a disadvantage....especially if that second game is against a better team.
