Jesus, just watched the Canadian broadcast on the pick.

Man the Canadian coverage is bad...
I'm chapped, I went back and looked at the "comparable player" that SN was using for all these prospects and of course they just don't even list one for Hughes.

So question now is who would the comparable to Hughes be just for arguments sake?

Krug with a significantly worse shot has always been my comparable with Hughes. Not a bad player, and one I like having in the system, but considering what was on the board at the time, I'm not overly excited about the pick.

I am disappointed.. I couldn't picture a scenario where the Canucks would passover Dobson. I hope they didn't over think this.

I'm not 100% sure about the pick though the upside to Hughes is absolutely huge. I just can't get past the size. Would have preferred Dobson. Still, overall glad we didn't trade the pick.

Was fully expecting Dobson, but happy with Hughes...When Arizona went off the board, the whole Canuck table was all smiles with their pick.

Burkes comments about college players not signing with their drafted team was a bit disconcerting though.

He's an exceptional skater. Will join Bure and Kesler as the 3 best skaters in the history of this franchise. He'll be an entertaining player to watch.

But he's 5'9. His upside is sheltered 2nd pairing defender/PP specialist. And I'm not sure how skilled he is beyond his skating - kinda wonder if he'll be a bit Bartkowski-ish when his great skating hits the opposition blueline.

That said, that he was able to compete well against men at the WCs is a very good sign.

I don't even understand this comparison. Ellis is a very average skater, which was why he dropped during his draft and why people thought his game wouldn't translate. Hughes is the best skater in the entire draft, and the way he changes passing and shooting lanes through that is special. Ellis also has a terrific shot, whereas Hughes does not.

The board was generally split between Hughes and Dobson as both being high on the wish lists, with other good choices as well. That’s a good sign, we’re usually more right then we are wrong

If concussions are a long term concern of the NHL, and they probably will be, then hitting will likely go down and the skilled player should flourish. As for a player comparison, my dream is that he becomes the Patrick Kane of defenceman. Dare to dream lol :naughty:

He's listed as 5'8 for the IIHF 2018. Ya I dont understand why people keep saying his ceiling is the highest. Gotta have a great shot to go along with that skating for that to happen.

As disappointed as I am with the pick, I will say that Brackett is probably high on him considering he's our top American scout and director of amateur scouting. But then again he pushed to draft Rathbone who's also small and a great skater, but has an extremely long way to go defensively.

Fair enough. Its hard to find another player that skates as well as he does and shoots as poorly.

Correct me if I’m wrong but if his skating is as tremendous as everybody says it is, how far off are the comparables to Scott Neidermayer who was known as a godly skater
