It'll be interesting to see how the 1 week window to talk to FA's impacts things during the draft. Love the fact that one starts before the other.

For one day and half.

I doubt it will with so many FA's

No, but most teams aren't looking at more than a handful of them. You reach out to the top guys on your list. So if JR's list has Williams, Beleskey, Stafford and Tlusty on it, and he gets the impression that he can sign Stafford and Beleksey for 5x 4.5m and 4x 4m, he might be more open to moving Kunitz and Sutter for a pick and a prospect and be less concerned about getting a "top 6 winger" in return - which we all know is unlikely.

We're only interested in a few of them. If we can gauge interest from a Stafford or a Frolik, that gives us something to go on. From what the locals in Winnipeg are thinking, they're pushing harder on Stafford, and pretty much assume Frolik is gone.

And I like that Kessel might be signed and sealed to Montreal, I don't like that we could be bidding against a package including Galchenyuk.

JR is hopefully not senile enough to give a bunch of never has beens that kind of money.

I've never been more terrified as a fan of this team.

A mediocre to just plain bad GM, with no assets to move while desperate to make the team better NOW as the window is closing is just a horrible, frightening combination.

And if they change their minds when other GM's call?

I wouldn't take anything seriously until after the draft. You still probe, but to make trades on words and nothing more could really backfire. Shero did that with Hossa.

Yeah it could really go either way. He could move Sutter+ for Vanek/Coyle or for someone like Etem (or whomever there)... and sign a few FAs... or he could trade him for Lupul and overpay for Sharp.

I don't see how trading Kunitz and Sutter for young assets (picks/prospects/young players) could backfire. Its something we should be doing anyway.

Kunitz and Scuds they should be trying to trade for any futures or assets they can regardless of all other trades. Sutter could fetch a player of value, or futures. So that would be more complex.

Yup. This is going to be a very interesting few weeks. At this point I'm just looking forward to the entertainment. Frankly, I don't have a lot of confidence in this management team's ability to address the team's needs.

Re: Dreger on Kessel and Pens.

I have been working under the assumption that Kunitz and Scuderi need to be moved regardless of whether we get Kessel. So I'm not really sure how that's relevant to the Kessel conversation. Now moving them may be a challenge, but it needs to be done (if that means a buyout on Scuds or slight salary retention, then so be it).

I think it could be even worse. Like say keeping Scuds and Kunitz and signing Tlusty for 4-5MM.

Scuds as much as I'm hoping he's gone, I've kind of resigned myself to accepting that he'll still be here in Oct. Same more or less goes for Kunitz. I think the team hopes he has a bounce back season. Personally at 35 I could care less if he does or doesn't. Trade him and let some other team take that risk. You know you'll get at least a 2nd if not a 2nd+ for him. You could probably even get a young player with some potential who's NHL ready out of a team that has a deep prospect pool and is looking for someone a little more established, but who won't cost a lot (cap/term) like most of the FAs will.

Honestly based on how crappy I think JR does with his trades, I'd almost rather he sign Tlusty (whom I don't really like) instead of trading for Sharp. At least Tlusty only costs money and not what few futures we have.

So uh:

Kunitz-Crosby-Hornqvist
Tlusty-Malkin-Perron
Dupuis-Sutter-Bennett
Spaling-Sundqvist-Rust

Maatta-Letang
Cole-Lovejoy
Scuderi-Pouliot

Yup that's playing the youth and stuff.
