Just got back from a long weekend trip to Breckenridge Colorado. What a glorious place. Epic scenery and phenomenal trout fishing were the highlights. Every drive was about as scenic as it gets. Drove over the continental divide, swam in the hot springs, caught fish of a lifetime, enjoyed legal recreational cannabis, saw pronghorns and buffalo galore, visited Buffalo Bill's grave basically by accident, and ate some fantastic food. The food scene out there was awesome. We actually drove through South Park randomly too which was a surprise. Would definitely recommend Breck and Colorado in general to anyone thinking about visiting.

Although we went to Vail one night expecting to stop for dinner and I felt dirty just being there. Wouldn't fit in there one bit, way too fancy for my taste.

Nice. The spouse and I spend at least a week in Colorado every year (he grew up there). Last year we spent a couple days in Leadville and hiked Mt. Elbert, which was my second 14er. Leadville itself wasn't really much, though the Hotel Delaware was kind of an unusual and interesting place to stay, but the drive there and back from our homebase on the western slope was pretty much everything you want out of a trip in CO. Our retirement plans center almost exclusively around where in Colorado we are going to retire.

Colorado is beautiful. Me and my buddies have taken a ski trip out there 2 of the past 3 winter's and it's just awesome. We stay in Beaver Creek but drive over to Vail to ski. It's unbelievable. The drive from Denver out to the mountains is beautiful. I'd love to go out there in the summer and do what you just did. Sounds awesome.

Also, for whatever reason, Southwest usually has cheap flight out to Denver. When we went out last year, I think it was $150 round trip.

Nice, Leadville was pretty close to where we were. We drove from Breck to Eleven Mile almost every morning to fish the Dreamstream, so we drove through that area daily. Alma, Fairplay, Hartsel. I could live out there in a second, I just need to convince the wife...

I've never done a winter trip, but this is my second summer trip and it's totally worth it. I don't snowboard much anymore since my knees are dicks now, but I've been to Whistler in winter and summer and that's the closest thing to Breckenridge I've seen and it really is two different worlds. I'd love to make it to Colorado in the winter. Plus you can still fish in the winter too...

American had some cheap flights up until recently too. Last time I went we paid $150 round trip and this time was around $350.

How did you not stop at the Breckenridge Brewery? They make a really good Vanilla Porter Nitro. Also, I just realized that they are owned by InBev... ugh...
We did actually. Went there for dinner one night, it was delicious. I was drinking the oatmeal stout that night.

We also went to the Breckenridge distillery for dinner one night, and that probably my second favorite meal of the trip. Their gin cocktails were on point too. Definitely check it out next time you're out there.

As I'm going to be scattering my brother's ashes at the old campground tomorrow, I am the last person who should be laughing at this, but it's so god damn hilarious. Especially because this is supposed to be serious.

Super jealous yet happy for you. My hobbies would include all of the above. Were there a ton of trout? Biggest?

Could you please expand a bit on where you fished? I am looking for a place to go next summer and I am not familiar with that area at all. Last month I fished the Fremont River and some small creeks in the Torrey, UT area. Had a great time, but am looking for a new place. And what kind of trout did you catch??? Your description sounds like heaven...

I'm trying to plan a trip out to Whistler this year, if not, we'll probably head back out to Colorado. How is Whistler? Heard great things about it.

@kimochem (I'll answer you here too)

We caught a ton of trout while we were there. We fished the Blue River in Silverthorne the first evening and caught a bunch of small browns and rainbows on dry flies. Tiny blue winged olives and midges.

The next 3 days we fished the Dream Stream which is a small section of the South Platte River between Spinney Mountain Reservoir and Eleven Mile Reservoir. It was on fire all three days. Day one we caught browns, bows, and cutbows on size 22 trico and blue winged olives dries all day. Day two we fished size 22 drowned tricos and size 18 PMD nymphs and absolutely crushed fish all morning. Once the trico hatch starts around 8AM the fish move into the feeding lanes and you can sight fish them while they gorge subsurface. It was an awesome experience. Day 3 was more of the same as day 2. Big fish on tiny size 22 nymphs all morning. The average fish we caught was probably 19 inches and thick as hell. The fish eat well out there. The biggest fish was on day 3 when I landed a 23-24 inch cutbow that had to weigh damn near 7 lbs. It was an unreal fish, and one I'll likely never forget.

Whistler is one of my favorite places on earth. The snowboarding in the winter is obviously all-time, but it was an underrated summer trip too. It was almost just as busy in the summer as the winter. It can be a little bit expensive there, but that's what you get in a resort town like that. It's easy to get around with the buses no matter where you stay too. The drive from Vancouver on the Sea to Sky Highway is awesome too. Epic scenery. Them Canadians are a nice people too, so they got that going for them up there.

Holy...!!
That sounds like the fishing trip of a lifetime! I've yet to catch a 20" trout... biggest was between 18" and 19." Did you use a guide?
Thanks for the report! I think I am booking my flight now...

Where do you usually fly fish? 18-19" is a solid fish!

We did use a guide one day since my buddy had a voucher for an outdoor adventure place. We got a fantastic guide named Chris Ramos from Blue Quill Angler. Super knowledgeable and a really great guide in general. He works his ass off to make sure you have a great day. We had an absolute blast.

Depending on when you go, the Dream Stream has runs of kokanee salmon in the spring and fall. They also get lake-run trout at that time that can be upwards of 35" and 18+ pounds. I might shit my waders if I ever landed a fish like that...

Shaun is a tourist visiting a small town in the Arabian desert. He stops into a shop one day and when he's finished, he finds that his camel is missing its legs. Shocked, he approaches a bystander and asks if he saw who took his camel's legs. The bystander squints at him, looks at the camel, and says to Shaun "ah, that would have been the Camel Leg Thief, you can find him that way".
Shaun sets off in the direction the bystander pointed him in, he walks along desert roads, after an hour he comes across a traveller going in the opposite direction. He tells the traveller his story and asks how much further until he reaches the Camel Leg Thief. The traveller replies "a long way along the desert, you will need a car". Shaun walked back to the town, found a car rental branch, hired a car and set off again along the road.
He travels down the road until he reaches a huge lake. A sailor stands by his small rowing boat nearby. Shaun says "I am looking for the Camel Leg Thief". The sailor replies "the Camel Leg Thief lives across the water, but you can rent a boat back in the town". Running out of patience, Shaun drives back to the town, rents a boat, attaches it to the back of his car and goes back to the water. He gets in the boat and begins rowing across.
He rows for over an hour until he reaches the other side. On the other side is a mountain range. "I am looking for the Camel Leg Thief", Shaun tells a local. The local replies "the Camel Leg Thief lives over the mountains, you can rent hiking gear back in the town". Shaun is exasperated. "For f***s sake!", he exclaims. He gets back in the boat, rows across the water, gets in his car, and drives back to town. He finds a shop and rents hiking gear. He sets back off in the car, to the water, rows back to the mountain range and prepares his climb.
He begins hiking over the mountains, losing track of time as he crosses, and gets to the other side. There he is faced by desert plains, he asks a nomad, "are you the Camel Leg Thief?". The nomad tells him "no, the Camel Leg Thief lives across these plains, but it will be dark soon and you can't cross the plains without warm clothing. There's a clothes shop in the town". Shaun can't believe it. He hikes back across the mountains, rows across the water, drives back to the town, and finds the clothes shop. There, he buys warm clothing for night time.
He drives back to the water, rows across, hikes over the mountains, and gets to the plains. It is getting dark, so he pulls on the clothing and begins to walk the plains. He walks all night. As the sun rises, he sees a huge palace ahead of him. He enters through the large doors. Inside is a huge room, the grandest room you'll ever see. On a throne, sits a man. "I am the Camel Leg Thief", proclaims the man, "what have you come for?".
Shaun asks the Camel Leg Thief, "did you steal my camel's legs?"
The Camel Leg Thief replied, "No."

I live in New Orleans, so unfortunately the closest fly fishing for trout is in Arkansas (a good 9 hours or so away by car). I've fished the White, Little Red, and Norfolk there and had a great time, but I love going out west. I can only sneak away from the family for a about a week in the summer, and I am always grateful to hear of other people's favorite fishing spots.

I caught the 18-19" in a place called Elktrout in Colorado over 10 years ago. You have inspired me, sir!

Can't say I've ever fished Arkansas in my travels, but I've heard of some decent trout streams down there. I fish the Upper Delaware system in the Catskill mountains in New York. It's an amazing fishery.

Good luck out in Colorado if you can make the trip work!

I'm more of a Krasno, Krasno, and Onwudinjo kind of guy, but thanks anyway. They're working on a new boot and binding system for my condition as we speak. They go above and beyond for their clients.
Be honest, you had to google to spell that third name lol
