Roo kept talking about team structure and how well the team works. Hak must be doing something right

They do seem to be much better on zone entry and defensive positioning. Not sure if the fancystats support that though. Also doesn't hurt to have a 1a 1b goalie situation.

Manning got the worst penalty call, the other call was a makeup for the non-call on the Simmonds trip. Manning barely touched the guy's stick.

Laughton just looks a lot better at wing, though some of that is Cousins, he's so much better than a year ago, faster, stronger and more confident. Cousins is far more comfortable at center than Laughton, he anticipates the action and is a step ahead.

Gagner is making things tough, he's really picked up his play from a couple months ago and is starting to look like a legitimate top 6 winger - I think Hextall will give him the rest of the year to audition for a new contract.

What stands out is how mediocre the defensemen are as a group, while Manning is the whipping boy, there really isn't a top defenseman on this team right now, as good as Ghost can be on offense, he can be a problem on defense, as he was tonight, caught deep, took a bad penalty because he got muscled off the play, had some other gaffes. MacDonald is playing better but is a minor upgrade over Schultz, similar style, plays position, lacks strength and while mobile is limited offensively. Streit looks better but is still a shadow of the player he was two years ago, the shot is gone. Gudas is solid, but needs MDZ to stablize him.

Problem with Gagner is that he doesn't fit anywhere in the top 9 beyond this season and is too expensive + not good enough defensively to play on Hak's 4th line

I'm not sure how expensive Gagner will be going forward, that will probably decide if he returns. Gagner was close to being waived, so I don't think too many teams will give him $3M a year to find out if a month in Philly is proof he's turned the corner. The Flyers will have the best read on his development, so if Hextall doesn't try to keep him, well, nuff said.
