I despised the Morin pick from the instant it happened. Just a huge reach at 11 with a lot of good prospects available. I remember reading the Flyers-Morin rumor in the paper before the draft & getting ticked off.

If they were going D, I wanted Pulock, but would have been happy with Morrissey (who wasn’t predicted to go quite as high as he did). Also would’ve been good with Domi, though I was pretty sure they were hell bent on D.

Morin is definitely the biggest bust of that draft in terms of draft position. Any one of Pulock, Morrissey, Zadorov, Domi would have been better picks, in hindsight of course.

Definitely a Homer-style pick.
*Pronger-style pick. Prongs wanted Morin so bad.

Morin was a good pick. He actually played well his first stint up.

There's no predictions for injuries, which held him back massively.

If he stayed healthy and developed more, the team likely doesn't sign Braun

Morin is strictly a LH defenseman, so he really would have had little impact on signing Braun.
He might have forced a trade of Hagg or Ghost if he won the 3rd pair LHD job.

Hagg wouldnt be here. And yes, it would be great for us. Morin-Ghost looked really good in some games together I think.

They signed Braun for toughness and grit mostly. Not for being a RHD

I’ve seen way, way too many reaches on huge “physical package” type players early in first rounds.

Players who scouts get enamored with the “what if” because of raw physical traits.

But hockey sense is way more important. Never pick a guy at 11 who has questionable hockey sense & who has yet to have considerable junior success. It’s a recipe for bust, & you cannot afford to screw up an 11th overall pick.

They signed Braun for "veteraness" give the youth of the D-core (if Morin was healthy, 5 under 25 and Ghost at 26) but also b/c AV likes balanced pairs.
Which is why I expect a trade for a young RHD in the next year or two.

Sorry, should have been more clear.
Like i said, if Morin doesn't miss the last few years, he would have a couple years of being our shutdown/physical guy.

I highly doubt they trade for Braun at that point and look a different dmen
