People don't get on his case because, unlike Schultz and JJ, he doesn't make any money, but we really shouldn't want any part of Ruhwedel dressing over anybody else on the NHL roster. He is, in my opinion, the worst of the top 8 D by an enormous distance, even considering that Schultz has been awful for quite a while now.

The Penguins cap crunch doesn't seem as severe now with the new cap projections.

The cap is going up that much?
I wonder why?
I wonder if it has anything to do with so many teams being over the cap now? 13 teams are over the cap as of now with LTIR spending.

If Petts is 2LD I hope to f*** he's better going forward and he also gains muscle. He blows this season, he was fine last season when we got him.

One other thing to note is that JJ-Schultz weren't playing 3D minutes last night..yes, JJ left for his child's birth but Schultz played 19 minutes, in fact, every other D played 19-20 minutes except Letang...if Sully is going to being playing all three pairs around the same minutes, then JJ-Schultz is not really a third pairing, which makes them even worse...
It was Dumo and Marino's first game back. You can't expect them to play Top D minutes in their 1st game back. Dumo hadn't played since November. Give it a few games and you will see the numbers reflect that JJ-Schultz are the 3rd pairing.

JJ is 2nd on the team in SH ice time per game, tied with Letang. He gets more PK time than Dumoulin and Tanev. Pens' PK is currently top 10 in the league.

And of course there is such a thing as a great PKer. Do you even follow hockey? Some players literally exist in the league for their PK abilities, like Craig Adams.
Matt Cooke was also great at it and was the only reason that the Pens stomached some of his indiscretions for as long as they did.

Setting aside cap and term Johnson is our 5th best d-man.

Matt Cooke was FAR more than just a PKer.

He was a great 2 way player, and part of arguably the best 3rd line in hockey for a couple seasons. He was also a playoff warrior, and good for 15+ goals per season.

Guys like Craig Adams and Cullen (2019 version) epitomized PK specialist.

Matt Cooke was a very good player.

That said, I wish my team never employed him. Total POS on the ice.

Honestly, given the pairing's history, not a lot of reason other than maybe big game experience and wanting them on special teams. The pairing has been so bad historically.

That said... it's mostly been bad as a second pairing and with other bad things contributing. Maybe it'll work against cushier opposition and with less stuff contributing. By the numbers, it was good last night - good enough as not to be a real problem. If the pairing can succeed at 5v5 with RR style deployments, which were cushy as hell, then yeah, you totally deploy them for greater special team impact.

I don't think they looked good against Ottawa.

I know you'll correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't Riikola/Ruhwedel be a better bottom pairing than Johnson/Schultz? What am I missing?
I wouldn't say Ruhwedel is better than anyone on this blueline right now and that includes Jack Johnson, at least Johnson for his moronic gaffe's offensively, is still able to out muscle guys in his own end, Ruhwedel is a gong show on the ice, he either rushes up at the wrong times, doesn't know when to pass the puck, dumps along the boards literally all the time and is physically overmatched by everyone.

I would rotate JJ and Riikola with Schultz.

Johnson/Schultz were bad again last night. Afraid that pairing is going to hurt in the playoffs.
