THIS DATE IN FLYERS' HISTORY: April 9, 1981 -- Quebec 5 at Flyers 8
10968.jpg

In Game 2 of this series, played in Philly, Bill Barber's (3-0-3) hat trick led the Flyers to an 8-5 win. Barber began the scoring 2:07 into the game which came three seconds after a Dale Hunter minor expired. Barber scored later in the first period then completed his hat trick in the second period on a SHG after he stripped the puck from Anton Stastny which led to a thundering ovation inside the Spectrum. Barber later said "I was tickled to death. I never had a cheer like that." The Flyers led 3-1 after the first intermission and 5-3 through 40 minutes despite giving Quebec four powerplays (to zero) in the middle period. Ken Linseman made it 6-3 but the Nordiques narrowed the score to 6-5 with 6:35 to play before Mel Bridgman extended the lead and Bobby Clarke added an ENG. Bridgman (2-1-3) and Al Hill (0-3-3) also had three points and Pete Peeters made 20 stops.

Hopefully Mason gets the start to see what happens. Considering I don't think we suck enough to go below the Flames and Avs this season (points-wise), might as well try for a playoff spot, yet still try for a 7th to 10th draft spot for Nurse/Rist/Morr.

We are 5 points out of a playoff spot yet we are 25th in the NHL right now. It's going to be an interesting stretch. And man, that picture of Schenn just shows how much of a tank he is.

Biggest game of the year to this point. A win puts them right back in the thick of the first for the last two playoff spots. A loss would leave them 7 points back from the Islanders with nine games to play.

I expect another loser point--prolonging our agony.

I did not expect any time in the near future to see the words "biggest game of the year" and "Islanders" in the same stream of thought.

Monday's early practice notes from Tim P.:

https://twitter.com/tpanotchCSN

  1. no timonen so he is likely resting that injured leg/foot
  2. nick grossmann not on the ice as of yet.
  3. danny briere in a normal prax jersey but ... playing on defense for drills which suggest he remains out;
  4. Hartnell back on 1st line;

Sorry for the pessimism folks, but the playoffs cannot be achieved.

The line up is too depleted, they take too many periods off, and the teams ahead are playing better.

Might as well throw Mason in to protect Bryz from a buyout cancelling injury and reach for the stars of the draft.

If the team is going to miss the playoffs, they might aswell get rewarded with a Jones, MacKinnon/Drouin for doing so.

I would start Bryz again this game, but Lavy needs to put Mason in there on some of these back to back games in the future. He clearly needs to have a couple games off and Mason can hopefully fill in good enough to get some W's.

Hopefully Grossmann won't be out much longer. His shut down ability paired up with Couts at center is a site to see against the Malkins of the league.
