This is the 27th time Saskatchewan and Alberta have met in the playoffs, but the first time meeting before the semi-finals.

This is Alberta’s first quarter-final series since 1997.

Alta: A. Thacker (05:37 2nd), J. Hall (08:54 3rd)
Sask: R. Pelletier (11:53 1st), C. Jordan (10:15 2nd), J. Ball (11:12 2nd), V. Loschiavo (12:31 3rd)
Goal: Alta: Kruger (30 shots, 26 saves); Sask: Ross (21 shots, 19 saves)

These two teams have met in a lot of CW championship series, and even a U-Cup final, in the past. A meeting in the quarter-finals is therefore quite unique. The Banjo-Mutts controlled the game throughout, leading 1-0 and 3-1 at the two intermissions. The Evil Monkeys do not have the magnetism they had in the past. It used to be that they would usually outshoot their opponents even in their losses.

The regular season was very close, with both series being splits. The Mutts had an OTL, which gave them a 5-4 edge on points. Both sides have recent losses to Holy Trinity, so there is a level of vulnerability here.

This is the first playoff series for the Family Guys, yet these teams have played several series back in the ACAC days. They only played once this year, and they split. That was the Bluegars’ only loss to a Tier 2 team, and the Mythical Mutants’ only win over a Tier 1 team. The Bluegars really deserved a bye this year. However, they and Alberta had 16 games against Tier 1 teams, and 12 against Tier 2 teams. The other Tier 1 teams had 12 games against Tier 1 teams and 16 against Tier 2 teams.

In any event, the Bluegars are well set up for a cross-town rivalry semi-final series against the Bedrock Dinos next week. That should be the talk of the town. I would like to see the Bluegars finally break through and appear on a national stage. The Bluegars have four PPG players (GP-G-A-Points): Connor Bouchard (26-23-34-57), Clayton Hanus (26-13-23-36), Connor Blake (28-5-25-30), and Robbie Holmes (27-15-12-27).

I watched the game last night online...what else is there to do on Friday night in Dallas?

Saskatchewan was better from start to finish.

In 2021-22 Alberta the Bears won the Canada West.
They beat Acadia 7-0 and St. FX 7-3 in the U. Cup before blowing a 4-2 lead to UQTR and losing 5-4 in Double OT (outshot the 70-40).

This year's Bears team has no where near the forward depth of that team!
It doesn't look like the same program right now.
Regardless of what happens tonight...Alberta has some work to do.

IMO there is little to choose between the top five teams in the CW. It seems to me that the university option has decreased in its appeal for major junior grads. I wouldn't be surprised to see Alberta dipping into the Junior A ranks for future recruits. Plus there are now 9 teams seeking those players.

The West is more competitive with Mount Royal moving from ACAC to USports and UBC's program has improved significantly.
No knock on Herbers or Marple, just not as easy to land the cream of the crop as past years.

Of the eight quarter-final series taking place across the country, this will be the one and only one heading to a rubber match. This was an extremely well-played match. The Banjo-Mutts led 2-1 after one, the Evil Monkeys tied it in the 2nd, and then won it with the only goal of the 3rd period. Tyler Preziuso scored the tieing and winning goals. Jordan Kooy started in the Sask net, but left the game after the 1st period. Roddy Ross finished, after going the distance on Friday. Ethan Kruger has gone the distance in both games for the Monkeys. The winner will officially take on the T-irds in the semi-final round. No result in game 3 would surprise me.

I just saw the very ending of the 2nd period, and then the 3rd. It was already 4-4 when I tuned in. While the Bluegars clearly had the better of the play, the winner was netted with just over 4 minutes left. The first team website to upload a story was neither competing school. Instead, Bedrock uploaded the linked story to capitalize on the buzz. It will be Bluegars v. Bedrock next Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

Once again…never bet on Saskatchewan to beat Alberta when it matters most.
Well AUSFAN I guess I am going to have to run out and find a little crow and have a wee bite.
AB found a way again today.
Have to really think both programs were a little tight this weekend as no one expected to see them playing a 4/5 series in CW.
Given that the old birds from UNB were quick to jump on this u have to assume they were surprised and now slightly twitching that AB is still kicking.
Don’t count ‘em out! Still have some explaining’ to do to someone about 4th!?
2 pretty strong reps coming to the big smoke from Canada West and with AB moving on it will keep the fellas buckled in for a minute or two
In the next fees weeks.
Btw
Who is favoured in the OUA?
Keep the faith boys!!

No Sunday stories are posted yet at either the UofS site nor HuskieFan.ca.

In any event, this was a tremendous Sunday night battle. There was nothing to choose between these teams during the season, nor now. Sask led 2-0, Alberta led 3-2, and Sask led 4-3. Both sides looked tired with three games in three days.

The schedules are now posted in all three conferences.

Saskatchewan has a bad habit of not finishing off Alberta.
They opened this series with a win on Friday night and dropped back to back games on home ice.
They have blown leads in the past, including the University cup semi-final in Fredericton 2018 and the University cup final in Edmonton 2005, both to the Bears.
this was a big comeback win for Alberta and I can see them going into Vancouver with some confidence.
That first game is going to be key.

Watched the game last night.
Highly-entertaining.
Alberta found a way.
PP was horrendous and almost cost them the game: 0/6 on PP and and Saskatchewan scores a shorthanded goal through 2 periods.
Bears got the bounce in OT.
Will need to be far better vs vastly-improved and U Sport experienced UBC squad that is well coached by Sven Butenschon.
Aidan De La Gorgendiere is providing significant impact from the back end,

Saw both Alberta-UBC games in Edmonton Feb 2nd/3rd.
T'Birds like Scott Atkinson dominated in the face-off...
Two very close games could have gone either way.

UBC drilled the Bears earlier this season in Vancouver

This cross-town series started early on Thursday night and the game stories, all-star selection stories, and summaries are all linked. This was actually a very decisive win for Bedrock U. The first period was wild, ending in a 2-2 draw. The Dinos dominated the second, outshooting the Bluegars 19-7 and taking a 4-2 lead into the third. MRU outshot the Dinos 9-3 in the third, but with a two goal deficit those 9 shots were not going to throw much of a scare.

This was a must-win for the Bluegars and, as has been the case every year, they came up just a wee bit short. They were leading 1-0 and on a PP when they surrendered a shorthanded goal. From then on, Bedrock U had the better of the play. However, a nice comeback, capped with a game-tieing goal with 26 seconds left, forced overtime.

This means that of the two CW Tier 1 teams eliminated so far, both were sent packing in overtime.

Bedrock U will be going back to the nationals, where they are currently on a 0-8 run. Their last win was 6-3 over Brandon in 1981.

The Evil Monkeys took control of this one in the third period, which is all I was able to watch. A 1-1 nip-and-tuck battle became a routine 4-1 victory. Can the T-irds stave off elimination?

UBC would host Calgary in the final if they win this series, whilst Alberta would head south should they win this.

Alberta was better in the third, taking advantage of UBC turnovers and sloppy goaltending.
Basically, two tap in goals after the puck squirted through Schwebius in this game.
T-birds didn't generate enough offence and sustained pressure was minimal.

From my perspective, the physical play is not at the same level as SMU/UNB semi final game#1.

Quick Summary
Alta: A. Hall (14:50 1st) , J. Hall (11:18 2nd)
UBC: S. Atkinson (06:33 2nd) , S. Huo (18:20 2nd) , S. Huo (00:23 3rd) , S. Huo (19:25 3rd)
Goal: Alta: Kruger (37 shots, 33 saves); UBC: Schwebius (13 shots, 11 saves)

The crazy thing about this game was that the Evil Monkeys never posted more than 5 shots in a period. Not at all like the old days, eh?

Also, there were two long delays due to arena malfunctions. One was a loose board, and the other was an ice divot which was repaired with a fire extinguisher. Not what you'd expect from such a fancy arena.

Sam Huo scored a hat-trick when UBC was trailing 2-1 to give them the lead in this one. He also scored on Friday, and had 14 goals and 19 assists in 24 games during the regular season.

I think I would sooner watch the Calgary stream than the UBC stream next weekend. To get this, the Monkeys must win. On the other hand, an Ape-free U-Cup would be a nice change.

UBC upped their physical play on Alberta and had good stretches of sustained pressure in the O zone, something that they didn't have in game #1.
Despite the disadvantage in shots 37-13, U of A were in position to steal this game entering the third period. IMO, Kruger was solid in net and has outplayed Schwebius.
IMO, a game closer in shots will favour Alberta.
