Welcome to 2024! The Bisons will be happy to say farewell to 2023. Can the Bisons rally to save the season?

The Bisons find themselves 8 points behind MacEwan, with two games in hand. The Bisons have 12 games left, Mac has just 10. The Bisons are done with Alberta and Regina, and have one series left against the rest. Their series against Mac is at home.

The best players will have to be the Bisons’ best players, to float a cliche. Statistically, Captain Hooker leads the forwards (10 goals & 5 assists) and Chase Hartje leads the defencemen (2 goals & 12 assists).

Goaltending is much better this year than last. Rookie Kolby Thornton carried the team early but I think got a bit burned out. He is 0-10-1 with a 3.81 GAA and .901 S% to be ranked 7th of all qualified goaltenders conference-wide. No “Tier 2" team has a goaltender at that level. Ross Hawryluk made an impact, going 2-2-0 with a 3.49 GAA and .918 S%. Though he has not played enough to be qualified in the goalie rankings, the only qualified goaltenders with a better save percentage are Carl Stankowski (Calgary) and Roddy Ross (Sask).

The T-irds are in the mad scramble amongst the top five teams. The 5th place team would have to win three straight series on the road to win the title. It’s never been done before in the CW. It is not hard to imagine any one of the five winning the title. They have no fewer than 7 players at a point-per-game or better, and four more at a half-point-per game or better.

It is unusual to see an Out of Town Scoreboard in a preview. This game was played on January 2nd to wrap up the holiday season. The Clippers are 9-3-0 in the ACAC, good for 2nd place one point behind NAIT.

The Evil Monkeys have had their ups and downs thus far. They sometimes look to be on the verge of recovering their perennial national championship contender status, and at other times they look vulnerable. I strongly suspect that Holy Trinity doesn’t a stand a prayer in this series. These sides have played six times. The Apes won three times by three goals each, once by four, once by five, and once by six.

This is a home-and-home Battle of Saudi Alberta, Friday in the Town of Bedrock and Saturday in Edmontown. The Family Guys are clinging to the 6th and final playoff berth, with a 3-point cushion over Regina. The Dinos are in a good place. Three of their five remaining series are against the Tier 2 teams.

The Battle of Banjoland is another home-and-home series, and is a unique Saturday-Sunday format. Like the other three series, this is a Tier 1 v. Tier 2 battle. I hear the winner gets a jug of moonshine.

Quick Summary
UBC: J. Kryski (03:33 1st), C. Douglas (05:12 1st), T. Rask (19:05 3rd)
Man: T. Apetagon (02:40 2nd)
Goal: UBC: Schwebius (25 shots, 24 saves); Man: Thornton (33 shots, 31 saves)

On a night when the Winnipeg Jets moved into first overall in the NHL (!!!!!), the Bisons welcomed a home crowd to the new year with a loss. The story here was a lack of finish by the Bisons. Especially when it was 2-1 playing in the 3rd period and great opportunities were missed. Here’s how they lined up:

MANITOBA BISONS
Goal:
30 Thornton (34 Hawryluk)

Defence:
16 Hartje - 27 Gottfried
8 Toth - 4 Malchuk
24 Wareham - 25 Calder

Forwards:
21 Basarab - 18 Hooker - 17 Veloso
20 Apetagon - 9 Thiessen - 11 Ostir
10 Paulhus - 12 Trimble - 26 Boucher
29 King - 28 Behun - 19 Arpin

Scratches:
Goal: 1 Harkness
Defence: 5 Casey - 6 Fry
Forwards: 13 Sutter - 14 Zimmerman - 23 Fawkes

U.B.C. THUNDERBIRDS
Goal:
60 Schwebius (31Luding)

Defence:
40 Smart - 26 Lambos
9 Smith - 27 McDonald
24 Lee - 12 Keon

Forwards:
17 Kindree - 8 Miller - 34 Mutala
14 Kryski - 41 Williams - 25 Wright
23 Rask - 4 Thorpe - 29 McNabb
13 Wismer - 15 Atkinson - 37 Douglas

Scratches:
Goal: 30 Lane
Defence: 7 N Form - 43 Pouliot
Forwards: 10 Doust - 19 J Form - 21 Huo - 38 Kotylak

The game was not physical, but chippy. That’s the style in British California. I expect that Saturday’s rematch could be a display of tempers. Both sides were 0-for-4 on the powerplay in this one.

This was the blowout expected by everybody. It was 1-0 for Holy Trinity after one period, but then there was a pile of penalties and bananas were flying everywhere. In the end, it was a BC-style chippy game where Trinity was 0-for-4 and the Evil Monkeys were 1-for-5 on the powerplay.

This was one of the most defensive games I have seen in the CW. The teams combined for just 41 shots. It was also a BC-style chippy game. However the Bisons were 0-for-7 and the T-irds were 0-for-4 on the powerplay. So on the weekend the teams were a combined 0-for-19 on the powerplay.

The Bisons had one line-up change, subbing Zimmerman for Ostir. Both teams siwtched their starting goaltender.

January 7, 2024: BUSY SUNDAY IN UNIVERSITY HOCKEY

There was an extremely rare game in the CW on Sunday, plus a lot of games elsewhere in destinations east and west.

Reg: none
Goal: Sask: Kooy (21 shots, 21 saves); Reg: Evanoff (L) (22 shots, 16 saves), Meger (14 shots,11 saves)

After a good game in Saskatown on Saturday, the Banjo-Cats came home only to be distracted by playing in the Brandt Centre. This win for the Banjo-Mutts vastly exceeded what I expected. This win pulls the Mutts level with the Bluegars in 4th place.

The Bisons played well in two losses to the T-irds last weekend and one could argue that a repeat performance this weekend would render at least two points in the standings. Each goaltender had a strong game, and the defence did not allow 40 shots. The problem was their inability to cash in on the PP. They were 0-for-4 on Friday and 0-for-7 on Saturday. This had been the bright spot, relatively speaking.

The player to watch on the Bluegars is Connor Bouchard, with 16 goals and 20 assists in 16 games. The prevailing thought was that MRU would slump after major departures from Riley Sawchuk and Nolan Yaremko. But on their night they look as good as any team in the conference.

This home-and-home series is well worth a watch. Although the teams are just 3 points apart, even a split for Bedrock U would make it hard for the Evil Monkeys to catch them. The Monkeys are excited about 2nd semester recruits Aidan de la Gorgendiere and Connor McClennon.

Can the T-irds help the Bisons out this weekend? If the Bisons want a playoff berth, they have to hope that only they will be a Tier 2 team to beat a Tier 1 team down the stretch.

Goal: Man: Thornton (L) (21 shots, 15 saves), Hawryluk (18 shots, 15 saves); MRU: Farkas (19 shots, 19 saves)

The Bisons came out as flat as possible in the 1st period, being outshot 17-4 and trailing 3-0. The 2nd period was not so one-sided but the Bluegars still managed four more goals. I switched over to see the 3rd period of the Alberta v Calgary game.

The Evil Monkeys built a 3-0 lead before Bedrock U made it a nail-biter. The Dinos carried the play at the end, not surprising considering they needed a major rally.

The CW had a good staggered Saturday scheduled, making it possible to see at least a period of every game. Then the cancellations in British California created a large gap. More on that later.

The Bisons were clearly better than on Friday, but they proved again that they need a Grade A goal-scorer or two. As it went, the Bluegars scored a 1st period goal from a period of sustained pressuree, a 2nd period goal on a PP when Tony APetagon of all people was assessed a 5-minute major for boarding, and a 3rd period empty-netter.

The away team won both games in this series. Each side switched starting goaltenders for this one, continuing the usual rotations they have used all season. This game seemed closer than the score would indicate. Bedrock U scored 5 goals on 11 shots in the 2nd period. IMO, this result will make it difficult for the Evil Monkeys to secure a bye to the semi-final round.

First, they changed this Friday-Saturday series to a Saturday-Sunday format so as to allow the Banjo-Mutts time to mush their sleds through the rockies.

Second, they cancelled the series altogether. Making it up in the next four weeks will not be easy. The Mutts really could use the four points available here.

It seems to me that after listing pretty badly for the last 5 years or so, the Bison hockey program is getting close to rock bottom. I'd be curious to know how the Bison sports braintrust intends to correct this situation.

I assume this boils down mainly to recruitment and I don't understand why it's such a challenge considering that the Bisons were more often than not a mid-table team for so many years, until recently. Somewhere along the line, good players stopped wanting to play here.

We'll find out a lot next year. The last 2 seasons have not had a lot of recruiting due to the coaching change.

Good point. It took Gardiner MacDougall a few years to get real effective at recruiting after he took over at UNB.

The previous coach had a really bad reputation ... for reasons I don't know, WHLers did not want to play for him. Many opted to play Senior hockey in the outlying communities instead.

Bedrock U is now one point behind UBC in the race for 1st place. The Bisons are 6 points behind MacEwan in the race for 6th place. At the start of the season it looked like the Dinos were on their way to a Yabba-Dabba-Doo time. Now they are in that tight bundle of Tier 1 teams. I suspect that the Bisons will manage at least one close game on home ice. They did have two tight games with UBC two weeks ago. Of concern must be that the Bisons were shutout twice by the Bluegars last weekend.

In these Tier 1 v. Tier 2 matchups, the story is the same. The Bluegars need all four points up for grabs here.

The previous coach had a really bad reputation ... for reasons I don't know, WHLers did not want to play for him. Many opted to play Senior hockey in the outlying communities instead.

The recruiting equation for the Bisons is unique within Canada, but also very simple. They can compete for a University Cup if they retain all WHLers who are from Manitoba, but they are never going to convince elite talent from outside of Manitoba to move to Winnipeg. So, I would focus on the perks that matter to MB-raised WHLers early in the process:
1) Find/create/develop scholarship funds for MB-based athletes. Money talks. Can you get a Barry Trotz Scholarship Fund?
2) Enroll current MB-based WHLers in UManitoba distance learning so their credits are with UM.
3) Create a family seating area in the arena (there are private-ish box areas from the ICE era).
4) Forge a relationship with the Jets/Moose so your players are on their radar / available for ATO / practices.
Just a few things:
- Pre-Covid almost all starters were WHL grads.
- They have a Mike Ridley Scholarship fund. Every player with a B average gets cash.
- The remote learning was set up at the U of M and elsewhere. Oddly, it has resulted in more players jumping direct to pro.
- The "upper deck" has a press box and room for about two dozen people. It's open to the public.
- They do have a relationship with the Moose. They played twice this pre-season, and have played several games in the past.

Interesting perspective, thanks for that.

I get that the wrong personality can cause some real problems. The funny thing is that the Bisons were good for a number of years under the previous coach. But something went wrong along the way.

In terms of recruiting elite talent from outside Manitoba, I get that UManitoba has a hard time competing with sexier locations, mainly thinking BC here. But why is UManitoba the least desirable relative to other prairie universities (including Alberta here as prairie provinces)? What do they offer student-athletes that UManitoba doesn't?

Scholarship funds are not a bad idea, you would think the sheer number of Bison hockey alumni could make that happen. You don't need someone to cut a cheque for six figures (although that would be nice), it could happen with a bunch of smaller donations. Have a fundraising golf tournament, etc.

In terms of the family seating area, why would that even matter? There's hardly ever more than 150 people at a Bison hockey game, the entire arena is a de facto family seating area.

In terms of developing a relationship with the Jets/Moose, that's interesting. The ICE clearly had that going with Zinger's kids involved in hockey ops. Chevy was often seen standing along the rail. Not sure what the Bisons have in that regard, but is that even normal for USports hockey? I'm not sure what use the Jets would really have for the Bisons except as maybe a source of EBUGs. EDIT: and as @Hollywood3 pointed out, a source of annual tune-up games for the Moose.

Great questions. UM is a comprehensive university alongside Sask, Calgary, and Alberta. They offer any degree program you'd want, so that's their direct competition. I am not counting Regina, MRU, or MacEwan, because they are lesser universities. Same with TWU.

Why is UM less desirable? Winnipeg is colder, has a MUCH higher crime rate, and is more geographically isolated than any of those cities. Bison student-athlete travel is arduous, with the nearest competitor a 7 hour bus ride away. For WHLers who spent five years living on busses, that's not appealing. Within the city, the UM campus is unappealing ... it's geographically isolated within the city (although the Southwood development will help), so you really need a car, whereas you can easily live in Edmonton or Calgary without one. The athletic facilities are good, though.

When you're at such a competitive disadvantage as UM, the little things matter. Family seating (yes, I know the physical space already exists, which was my point) is a little detail that shows that you care about your players. Manitobans are very family-centered ... so if you're trying to retain MB-based WHLers who just spent 5 years away from their parents, appeal to that value.

Alberta has overlapped tightly with the Oilers for decades. For elite talent deciding between the AHL/ECHL and USports, the IDEA that they'll be seen by NHL scouts is meaningful. You know you'll get seen and/or talked about if you play for the Golden Bears, if by nobody else than Bob Stauffer, and the proof is that Philp and Sawchenko (among others) have moved up from there in recent years. But UM is a desert of NHL scouts because there's no WHL team and the MJHL is not really scouted. If you want your elite MB-born talent to choose UM, you need to offer them hope of moving on.

Thank you, that's an interesting perspective.

I have a hard time believing that Winnipeg as a city is significantly less desirable than Saskatoon or Edmonton, I've spent a lot of time in both and I don't think there is a major difference when it comes to climate, and both of those cities have crime issues roughly on par with Winnipeg. It's hard to imagine that Winnipeg being marginally higher on the crime index than Edmonton is going to be a deciding factor for a 20 year old hockey player, especially given that it's effectively a non-issue in the university area. Calgary is a bit different, the chinooks and proximity to the foothills/mountains is a bit of a distinguishing factor, along with the overall bigger-city vibe.

I can see travel distance being an issue, there are no short hops for the hockey team. Just long rides although I don't think any prairie university gets off easy on that front. I can also see the lack of connection to the broader hockey ecosystem being an issue. But that said, it's not like there was influx of WHL talent during the years the ICE were here. I am pretty familiar with the U of A and their situation and they are embedded in the hockey community in a way that is enviable for the Bisons. Their rink is old and small but they have a dedicated fanbase and they do get some attention. In some ways I see that as a good model for the Bisons... I don't ever expect them to play in front of 6,000 fans a night but maybe a thousand like in Edmonton is not out of the question.

Sask/Alberta are perennial power houses most years. Manitoba has good years, but is more mid-tier compared to the national championship regulars. (UNB/Acadia/UQTR/STFX/ALB/SASK)

Man: R. Zimmerman (06:22 2nd)
Goal: Calg: Tetachuk (19 shots, 18 saves); Man: Hawryluk (29 shots, 25 saves)

This game was closer than 5-1 may imply. Mid-way through the 2nd period, the teams were level with just 9 shots on goal. The Herd deployed a 1-3-1 system and were holding Bedrock U in check. Here’s how they lined up:

MANITOBA BISONS
Goal:
34 Hawryluk (30 Thornton)

Defence:
8 Toth - 4 Malchuk
16 Hartje - 27 Gottfried
5 Casey - 24 Wareham

Forwards:
29 King - 18 Hooker - 17 Veloso
20 Apetagon - 9 Thiessen - 21 Basarab
10 Paulhus - 19 Arpin - 28 Behun
14 Zimmerman - 12 Trimble - 13 Sutter

Scratches:
Goal: 1 Harkness
Defence: 6 Fry - 25 Calder
Forwards: 11 Ostir - 23 Fawkes - 26 Boucher

CALGARY DINOSAURS
Goal:
35 Tetachuk (1 Stankowski)

Defence:
7 King - 24 Anderson
34 Sutter - 4 Strange
9 Wytnick - 2 Krebs

Forwards:
38 Kydd - 8 Gutenberg - 29 Poole
14 Gricius - 44 Stotts - 28 Gengenbach
33 Patterson - 23 Joseph - 11 Massier
21 Melin - 27 Upper - 19 White

Scratches:
Goal: 37 Martin
Defence: 5 Joseph - 20 DeJong - 22 Horning
Forwards: 10 Atwal - 17 Westhaver - 39 Lee - 42 Stewart

The lack of reliable skilled forwards is what is holding the Bisons back. They have just 3 goals in 5 games since the New Year. Otherwise 4 of their 5 games (all against Tier 1 teams) were winnable.

In the 2nd period, Riley Zimmerman opened the scoring with his 1st goal as a Bison. Carl Tetachuk in the Dinos’ goal just whiffed on one. The Dinos levelled the score on the PP. Although Zach Wytinck scored, it was set up following a nice play at the blueline (I believe by #19 Jaeger White) when a clearing pass was plucked from mid-air and caused quite a scramble around the net. The 1-3-1 broke down a short while later when Max Patterson converted a 2-on-1. The Bison defender (I could not get his number) got caught chasing the puck carrier and leaving the trailer wide open.

Just over a minute into the 3rd, the Bisons lost their nerve. The entire team was to the right of the goal, whilst Colson Gengenbach was all alone to the left. He could have counted two steamboats before tapping it into the empty net. There were few opportunities for goals thereafter. The Dinos made it 4-1 on Krebs’ point shot which may have bounced off a Bison, and 5-1 on an empty-netter.

The gap between Tier 1 and Tier was accentuated in this game. All I saw tonight was the Bison game (live) and the British Californians (end of 2nd period onward on CWTV). But this 10-0 was shocking, especially considering that these teams were 5th and 6th going into the night. It’s funny that both Mythical Mutant goaltenders stopped 19 of 24 shots.

This was the Thursday night game hosted by Holy Trinity. The score actually flattered the hosts a little bit. After two periods, the shots were 35-16 yet it was 3-1 for the T-irds. Raphael Audet fell apart due to exhaustion as UBC built a 5-1 lead the cruised to the finish line.

Quick Summary
TWU: D. Dubois (00:24 2nd)
UBC: J. Lee (11:06 1st), L. Kindree (11:43 2nd), T. Thorpe (15:38 2nd), J. Lee (03:05 3rd), J. Smart (05:41 3rd)
Goal: TWU: Sommer (57 shots, 52 saves); UBC: Schwebius (17 shots, 16 saves)

This was the Friday game. Although each side had just three powerplays, this was an excessively chippy game with several melees and philosophical discussions after the whistle. The flow of play was almost all one way, toward the Holy Trinity net. This was UBC’s Winter Classic, so they drew 4,802 fans to this one.

January 20, 2024: SATURDAY MORNING LINKS

There were surprisingly few stories posted Friday night (only Manitoba and Regina), and some are still missing as of this morning (MRU and Sask). Here’s the new stuff (Calgary, MacEwan, Trinity,UBC, and the CW Presto links).

➤ UofC: Déjà vu: Dinos down Bisons 5-1 (with boxscore)

Quick Summary
Calg: A. Kydd (04:48 1st), J. Poole (09:31 1st), M. Patterson (13:24 1st), C. Gutenberg (00:42 2nd), C. Gengenbach (08:17 3rd)
Man: P. Malchuk (02:27 2nd)
Goal: Calg: Stankowski (12 shots, 11 saves); Man: Thornton (46 shots, 41 saves)

This game and Friday’s game were both 5-1 scores. However, the games were not at all alike.

The line-ups had few changes. Both sides switched their starting goaltenders, Bedrock U switched out forward #11 Carter Massier for defenceman #22 Connor Hornung, and the Bisons swapped #13 Andre Sutter for #26 Andrew Boucher. The 7-11 split meant that the Dinos’ lines a defence pairs were in a continual state of flux, also affected by the constant parade to the penalty box. For the Bisons, the change just affected the 4th line and the rest stayed intact.

To be successful, the Bisons have to commit to physical play and stay in position. That was not happening here. The stats say that the Dinos were 2-for-8 on the PP, and the Bisons were 1-for-3, however the Bisons also gave up a goal with a few seconds of the expiry of a penalty. So really Calgary was 3-for-8.

The Bisons had a chance to start the scoring, but Colton Veloso was stopped on a penalty shot after 4 minutes of play. Within 42 seconds of the 2nd period, the Bisons trailed 4-0. Parker Malchuk’s powerplay marker made it 4-1, and they had several close calls to narrow the lead to 4-2.

The Bluegars have their 3rd shutout in four games with this result. It was only 1-0 headed into the 3rd period, but MRU racked up three powerplay goals. The Banjo-Cats had just two shots on goal in the 3rd period.

The Banjo-Mutts dominated yet another game against The Family Guys. This brought to an end the least competitive weekend of CW hockey I have ever witnessed. At least next weekend we have two Tier 1 matchups, and two Tier 2 matchups.

RSEQ-50x50.jpg

The still new RSEQ Division 2 is hard to follow. None of the teams have a traditional website with stories, schedules, and various links.

This is somewhat conjecture on my part, but it looks like each of the three teams is playing 6 games against the other two teams in Division 2 plus a random selection of exhibition games against College (CEGEP) teams.

The CMRSJ Remparts have played one game, an 11-0 loss to a CEGEP team. One other scheduled game has no reported score, and only one more game is scheduled, in February.
