Hold up, someone remind me why MacKinnon deserves to be the highest paid player in the NHL? He's not even the best payer on his own team.

No he did not. Even Mack made a comment after breaking out that at the time he signed that contract he was starting to have concerns about how well he would do in this league. That contract was fair at the time as it was also paying for potential.

Went with the safety of a 6.3M long-term contract when it was far from sure Mack would ever truly have his breakout. At the time the contract wasn't a discount in any way.

His agent absolutely did a bad job last time. Even if the contract was "fair" at the time for what he was producing, the agent had Nate go long term instead of shorter and betting on himself.
If Nate signs a 2 year deal for example and then goes insane the way he did, it would have been a lot better for him and his agent.
The agent did a poor job. Now in saying that it's not like anyone had a crystal ball and could predict MacKinnon getting to this level. Almost everyone on here if not everyone was certain MacKinnon would be a very low-end 1C based on his level of play until that point. Nobody saw top-5 player in the world coming.

Sure they are. I think it’s changing a bit but it’s clear this past off-season that UFA years are still expensive .

It depends on the player. For me, that UFA > RFA died when Marner & Matthews signed their deals and it's blurry every since. It doesn't matter much anymore if you are an RFA or UFA - IF you are good, you get paid. Period!

Being underpaid for several seasons does not mean his agent did a bad job at the time.

If we go by Mack's comment after he broke out it certainly looks like it is on Mack not his agent. The agent can try all he wants to convince a player to bet on himself with a bridge contract but if the player has doubts on himself (just like a lot of people did at that time as you said) the player will tell his agent he is taking the sure money. The agent can't force his player to sign a bridge contract.
