The Detroit Red Wings have signed defenseman William Wallinder, their second pick in the 2020 draft (32nd overall) to a three-year entry-level contact that starts next season.

Wallinder, 20, will join the Grand Rapids Griffins for the remainder of the 2022-23 season on an amateur tryout contract.

The 6-4, 190 pound, left-shooting Wallinder spent this season with Rogle BK in the Swedish Hockey League. He had seven goals and 26 points in 50 regular season games, tying for the most points by any skater 22 or younger in Sweden’s top men’s league. He had a goal and two assists in nine playoff games.

Wallinder was a big fan of former hard-hitting Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall, the team’s assistant director of player development with whom he has worked.

Wallinder isn’t quite as physical.

“I’m a big defenseman with great skating, like to carry the puck and lead offensive play from the blue line,” Wallinder said last summer during Red Wings development camp at Little Caesars Arena.

Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman said of Wallinder after the team drafted him, “He gets the puck and moves it to the forwards. He should be able to play as a two-way defenseman who can log minutes, (that) is our goal for him.”

Wallinder also tallied a goal and eight points in nine Champions Hockey League games this season, leading all defensemen in the tournament with seven assists.

GRIFFINS SIGN RYAN BEDNARD TO PTO

March 29, 2023
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Grand Rapids Griffins on Wednesday signed goaltender Ryan Bednard to a professional tryout.
Bednard has competed in one AHL game this season with the Belleville Senators, totaling 28 saves in a 4-3 overtime defeat. The 25-year-old has also seen action in 24 ECHL contests this season between Greenville and Wheeling and amassed a combined 13-8-1 ledger to go along with a 2.69 goals against average. Bednard was the 206th overall pick by the Florida Panthers in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. Prior to turning pro, the Macomb, Mich., native spent three campaigns at Bowling Green State University from 2016-19. In 68 NCAA appearances, Bednard notched a 39-19-8 record and a 2.06 GAA. In 2018-19, Bednard ranked sixth in the NCAA with a 1.77 GAA and his 20 wins tied for ninth.
