Houser upgrades his AHL SPC to a NHL contract.
This is somewhat of a yearly tradition as it has now happened 3 years in a row.

Bilek was immediately reassigned to Indy, Rockford's AHL affiliate. Outside from 2 games with the Moose, Bilek had spent the entire seson with the Trois-Rivières Lions, Laval's ECHL affiliate (Winnipeg doesn't have one).

TRADES!

Trade 1 :

Grimaldi currently coleads the AHL with 27 goals (in 54 games). While the trade can be summed up to Grimaldi for Sikura, it's technically a little more complicated :

Both Golod and Nijhoff will remain at the ECHL level and report to Indy.

Trade 2 :

This is actually related to the Patrick Kane trade. Hartford lost Andy Welinski, who is on a NHL contract, in that trade but acquired another veteran defenceman in the person of Clendening.

Meanwhile, Zach Jordan will report to Indy. He's among 4 ECHL reinforcements (along with Bilek, Golod, Nijhoff) acquired this week through NHL or AHL trades by Indy.

Trade 3 :

In a corresponding move, Anders Bjork who is signed to a NHL contract was traded from Buffalo to Chicago.

Trade 4 :

Whelan registered 5 points in 23 games with Hartford this year.

One more trade!

Meanwhile, Wyatt Kalynuk who is signed to a NHL contract was traded from Vancouver to New York. He'll report to Hartford.

Signings
Since monday, a large number of players on AHL contracts were signed to a NHL contract. Here is the list :

G - Dylan Ferguson (Belleville) - Signed by Ottawa (2022/2023)
G - Jean-François Bérubé (Charlotte/PTO) - Signed by Florida (2022/2023)
G - Evan Fitzpatrick (Charlotte) - Signed by Florida (2022/2023)
F - Alex Chiasson (Grand Rapids/PTO) - Signed by Detroit (2022/2023)
G - John Lethemon (Grand Rapids) - Signed by Detroit (2022/2023)
F - Ethan Frank (Hershey) - Signed by Washington (2023/2024)
F - Xavier Simoneau (Laval) - Signed by Montréal (2023/24 to 2024/25)
G - Evan Cormier (Manitoba) - Signed by Winnipeg (2022/2023)
D - Derrick Pouliot (San Jose) - Signed by San Jose Sharks (2022/2023)

Quite the turnover for Ferguson, who only a few days ago, was completly lost among the Marlies' goalie depth and is now in line for an NHL callup.

Please explain how a "loan" works. I assume Henderson is responsible for salary, but is it a precursor to an off-season move?
As a minimum it's a favor to the loaning organization. Yes, it could be an audition for future contract. But I have heard/read nothing about the reason for the loan.

The loaning organization "pays" the player, but often the team he's with actually runs the payroll/makes the deposit and is repaid by the loaning organization. (This is based on my assumption of "how things work" in the AHL based on how NHL teams handle salary retention -- current team pays full freight of salary/payroll handling and those teams who are retaining salary reimburse the current team.)

essentially it means the players rights do not revert to the affiliate, in that case Syracuse...and when it does happen you have that player for the rest of the season... Tampa can recall him, just like the loan doesn't exist... it's just assigned to Henderson instead of Syracuse.... Maine has a player like that... where his rights are owned by Philadelphia, but plays in Lehigh Valley, but has an agreement based off past history and plays in Portland, instead of Reading. it's not a precursor to a transaction... loaned players and that type of transaction are cancelled when the season ends for either Henderson or Syracuse, then it's up to Tampa as to whether this player returns there or Gemel goes elsewhere.

Kessy had spent the past 4 seasons playing for the Bears.

Belleville : The revolving door continues.

Belleville has used 7 different goaltenders so far this season. Richardson is one of them.

Update

Looks like Marotte's contract was voided because he's currently uneligible to play in the AHL. That's why the Belleville Sens had to circle back to Richardson.

This is the rule in play.
“Per AHL by-laws, a player who begins the season playing in a league outside of North America may not join an AHL team after February 1. (Prior to February 1, he must clear AHL waivers before signing.)”
Marotte started the season with the Dundee Stars, a Scottish team of the EIHL, he returned in North America in November to play in the ECHL.

The rule was uncovered a few years ago when David Vallorani was involved in similar scenario.

EDIT : Belleville seemingly isn't done with its goaltending woes.

If Marotte returned to NA in november to play after starting in europe...wouldnt a November return predate the Feb cutoff time? So shouldnt it have been a simple case of going through waivers to the AHL or do they not consider an ECHL contract in November prior to the deadline?

With Hill injured, Patera was called up. That meant the goalie coach, 50 yo Fred Braithwaite, was signed to PTO for Henderson. Sat on the bench for game this week. (With call up of Saville, he was released.)

A number of trades went down before Friday 3/10 AHL deadline.

I guess it's a bit of both. Despite returning to North America early in the season, the waiver window was already closed when Marotte signed with Belleville so he was simply uneligible for an AHL promotion past February 1.

Also, if I'm not mistaken, a player in Marotte's situation has to be signed to a SPC due to the waiver procedure.

Although Marotte's case is oddly specific, this February 1st deadline could use a revision. I guess this rule was created in order to avoid an influx of players once the season ends in Europe, which is usually a few weeks before NA, however the AHL already has the veteran-rule and the waiver-rule to block richer teams from taking advantage of the situation.

Also happened 2 years ago! Brathwaite wore his Atlanta Thrashers mask for the occasion.

Lone player on a AHL contract traded at the deadline :

In a separate trade, the Ottawa Sens sent Jayce Hawryluk to the New Jersey Devils for future considerations.

It's another of these "unofficial AHL contract for NHL contract" trades which are becoming more common.

The Newfoundland Growlers, ECHL affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced today that forward Pavel Gogolev has signed a Standard Player Contract (SPC) with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies and has been reassigned to the Growlers.

Gogolev, a 23-year-old Moscow, Russia native has had a whirlwind season in 2022-23. In his initial stint with the Growlers this season, Gogolev emerged as a top-line threat for Newfoundland, recording 21 goals and 27 assists for 48 points in just 33 games before being traded to the Chicago Blackhawks on Feb. 27 as a part of the deal that saw the Toronto Maple Leafs acquire Sam Lafferty and Jake McCabe.

He was reassigned to Chicago’s American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Rockford IceHogs, where he recorded his first AHL goal of the season in just two games played.

On March 8, Gogolev was released from his NHL contract with the Blackhawks, making him a free agent and allowing him to re-sign with the Marlies.

Gogolev had one more year left to his NHL contract but opted to return to Newfoundland instead of pursuing his pro career with the Chicago Blackhawks organisation.

Extension!

Hartford Wolf Pack General Manager Ryan Martin announced today that the club has agreed to terms with defenseman Blake Hillman on a one-year AHL contract extension for the 2023-24 season.

Hillman, 27, has appeared in 26 games with the Wolf Pack this season, collecting five assists. He joined the Wolf Pack on July 6th, 2022, signing a one-year contract with the team as a free agent.

A native of Elk River, Minnesota, Hillman has appeared in 122 career AHL games with the Wolf Pack, Providence Bruins, Grand Rapids Griffins, Stockton Heat, and Rockford IceHogs. He has scored 19 points (1 g, 18 a) and collected 46 penalty minutes in his AHL career.

Hillman also has appeared in four NHL games with the Chicago Blackhawks, all coming during the 2017-18 season.

Probably should create a new section called who the hell knows and move Perlini to it...guy came back from the Spengler Cup played a handful of games and then just left...hasn't been released...hasn't quit...just up and left and is doing a podcast. The joke here is that he's working from home now.
