GDT: 2021-22 season game 76 LA Kings vs Colorado Avalanche @6:30pm 4/13/22

I had the misfortune of witnessing this massacre in person. It looked like a minor league team playing an NHL team. On another note, the seats at Ball Arena are incredibly small. I'm 6ft tall and my knees were smashed against the seat in front of me. There's no way I'd want to go to a game there again unless there is a standing room only section or in a suite.

Who'd they play in the finals against? Montreal?
Shea Weber 6'4 230
Alex Romanov 5'11 185
Brett Kulak 6'2 190
Joel Edmunsson 6'4 227
Ben Chiarot 6'3 226
Jeff Petry 6'3 201

How about the year before?
Bogosian 6'2 200
Erik Cernak 6'3 230
Victor Hedman 6'6 241
Ryan McDonagh 6'1 215
Mikhail Sergachev 6'3 215
Shattenkirk 6'0 212

The Year before?
Blues
Bouwmeeser 6-4 206
Dunn - 6-0 203
Edmundson - 6-4 227
Gunnarsson - 6-2 198
Parayko - 6-6 230
Peitrangelo - 6-3 210

So, while guys like Makar and Hughes are talked about as the hot new trend, until we start seeing these guys have success in the playoffs, I'm not sure it's anything established.

Maybe, but if you look at the top 4 teams in the NHL let's just say point wise, Colorado, Florida, Carolina and Toronto....this is what you end up with let's use 25 GP as a base,

Bowen Byram - 6'0 - 194lbs
Samuel Girard - 5'10 - 170lbs
Erik Johnson - 6'4 - 225lbs
Jack Johnson - 6'1 - 227lbs
Cale Makar - 5'11 - 187lbs
Josh Manson - 6'3 - 224lbs
Devon Toews - 6'1 - 191lbs

Some big guys for sure in Johnson and Manson but that's it,

Florida

Ben Chiarot - 6-3 - 234lbs
Aaron Ekblad - 6-4 - 215lbs
Gustav Forsling - 6'0 - 186lbs
Radko Gudas - 6'0 - 204lbs
Brandon Montour - 6'0 - 194lbs
MacKenzie Weegaer - 6'0 - 200lbs
Robert Hagg - 6'2 - 204lbs

Again, only 2...

Carolina

Ethan Bear - 5'11 - 197Lbs
Ian Cole - 6-1 - 225lbs
Tony D'Angelo 5-11 - 180lbs
Eric Gelinas - 6'4 - 190lbs
Brett Pesce - 6'3 - 206lbs
Brady Skej - 6'3 - 210lbs
Jacob Slavin - 6'3 - 207
Brendan Smith - 6'2 - 200lbs

I'll admit I'm surprised Carolina's D is that big, I thought they were smaller

Toronto

TJ Brodie - 6'1 - 185lbs
Mark Giordano - 6'1 - 200lbs
Justin Holl 6-4 - 210lbs
Timothy Lillgren - 6'0 - 198lbs
Ilya Lybushin - 6'2 - 201lbs
Jake Muzzin - 6'3 - 217lbs
Morgan Reilly - 6'1 - 217lbs
Rasmus Sundin - 5;11- 183lbs

Now granted, you did mention playoff success, but for now, the 4 best teams, do not have an imposing defense, size wise, what they do have, is the ability to skate, and move the puck.

Toronto's defense is a shitshow. Can't get past round 1.
Colorado hasn't been past round 2.
Florida hasn't been beyond round 1.
Carolina got to the conference finals 3 years ago, but lost in round 1 and round 2.

These are all teams that haven't got it done.

As I said, playoff yet to be determined, but all 4 teams haven't had the defense they have had....

Todd was asked about Kaliyev's production this morning and gave a very very interesting answer.

I'll play the clip on the pregame show tonight between 6:30 and 7 on the iHeart broadcast
Be careful, might cause this board to go full-on meltdown mode.

Here’s the answer I got from the NHL Hack Coach Answers AI website when asking about Kaliyev’s demotion after being a PPG player. Curious to see what a $25M real life coach has to say.

Well, if you’re specifically talking about Kaliyev, he’s a young player who has had a lot of success as a goal scorer at the junior and AHL levels. We’re looking for him to become that player for the LA Kings.

We’ve asked him to focus on all facets of the game. Putting him with Lizzo, the greatest undrafted fourth line center in the history of hockey, has taught him the importance of the appearance of effort when it comes to earning ice time. Plus, he’s now ready to get blown up and come right back to upright on his skates. Check the recent highlights for evidence.

So Arthur has shown his teammates and his coaches that he’s willing to make the most of his opportunity by adapting his god given talents to the betterment of his linemates. Which is why we shocked the world by putting him with Kopitar for 40 minutes.

We thought he had clearly mastered digging pucks out, so we cut back AI’s minutes for a couple of games to check the box on resting our stars before the post season. Unfortunately, Kaliyev was better at being a PPG player instead of producing intangibles. So the coaches sat down with the HHOF managers, and decided to make a change.

That being said, we are in playoff mode now, with at least two games of home gate revenue up for grabs. We’re excited about celebrating Orthodox Faith night tonight against the Blue Jackets with the return of AA22 to the lineup. All fans in attendance will get a free hotdog and 1 year subscription to the athletic.

If I had to guess... the reaction to the quote won't be great and I've already done some digging into some stats and I'm not sure I even agree with the question that was asked much less the answer

BUT

it was an answer I wasn't expecting
You mean it appears as though the coach doesn’t know what he’s talking about? You don’t say.

LAKI had a quote from the coach about what production looks like.

He sounds like he’s talking about contributing, not producing.
