The only way to accurately scout is to look for the best names and start from there:
  • Primo Self
  • Jean-Luc Foudy
  • Hugo Styf
  • Ethan Szmagaj
  • Ozzy Wiesblatt (wait, wait, his siblings names are Ocean, Orca, and Oasiz. Imagine how unbearable those parents are jfc)
  • Fabio Iacobo
  • Aidan De La Gorgendiere

They're sick sick people. Strong likelihood they were cult members in their younger days. That's a red flag.

I know I may be forgetting someone but was there ever a Russian goalie with hopes to be drafted at such high position?

I don't recall anyone being this high on these rankings, be it Vasilevski, Bryzgalov, Samsonov or Varlamov. And the generation before (Nabokov, Khabibulin) certainly wasnt there afaik

Probably not. Obviously selecting goalies in the first round has gone way down all across the board.

Then add in the Soviet Union stuff the time frame probably isn’t big enough of a sample to find someone comparable.

Busy week at work. Here's what the scoring breakdown by CHL league looks like at the 1/3 mark of the season.

upload_2019-11-26_10-33-35.png

OHL is nearly a full goal per game higher than the other two leagues. Windsor is the highest scoring team in the CHL by a wide margin (4.81/game).

Off the top of my head, with the exception of the 16-17 season when Regina and Medicine Hat went bonkers, the WHL has almost always been the lowest scoring CHL League. I know it was when Provorov and Sanheim were in the league because I did a lot of historical comparisons.

Took me a little while to get caught up for the 2020 draft since I started a new job and moved this summer (I guess I should change my avatar now, bleh), but I finally have my rankings to a reasonable point.

As always, these do not reflect my personal opinions but are more like Bob McKenzie's rankings in that they are a consensus of what's out there. It's a good point to start at as the guys near the top are more hyped than the guys at the bottom.

Also as a caveat: there seems to be something dicey about players in the 75-90 range of my rankings. For whatever reason this is about the range that collects players that will go undrafted. I think this is an effect of "group-think" where guys show up on enough lists that they get hyped on other lists, but the actual scouts move past them once the draft actually comes. Think Samuel Fagemo in 2018 or Josh Williams in 2019 (although looking back at 2015, that range included Andrew Mangiapane, Travis Dermott, Ethan Bear, Sami Niku, Conor Garland, and Sebastian Ah; so who knows.

As always, please let me know if I have the teams or leagues wrong for anyone (it's a lot to keep track of and I am but a simple archaeologist). If you have questions are particular players, ask and I will tell you what I know.

My favourites from this class: Byfield, Perfetti, Askarov, Stutzle, Zary, Foudy, Savoie, and Garfve (although that last one is really just because that's a ridiculously awesome name).

Caught the WJAC game tonight. Pat Brisson’s son looks like a player. Smart. Skilled. Sweet hands.

It does appear Michigan will be getting some help next year if York &/or Beecher stay.

Eliteprospect isn’t really good with getting accurate classes but I’d have to imagine Owen Power will be there too. They have him for the following year but he’s a late birthday.

Son of a gun. He's supposed to be a secret.

Actually Gordo spelled his last name wrong.

That's where Seider played/plays I believe. I was there last summer. Apparently a big hockey town. The train station in the middle of town was all decked out in Mannheim Eagles stuff and it wasn't even hockey season. The arena also looked like it was pretty big and new. Is that typical in Germany? Always figured it was soccer or bust everywhere in non-Scandanvian European countries.

Even in Scandinavian countries, football (soccer) had passed hockey in overall numbers as of the early parts of this century, and I would think that has only grown. There are still plenty of hockey fans, obviously, and most people like both, but except for the northern parts of at least Sweden, football is bigger.

I finally got to see some good hockey since moving here as I caught the Russia vs Canada West game on Thursday.

I wasn't as impressed with Carter Savoie as I expected. He's.... pedestrian except on the powerplay. Not a great sign for a prospect coming out of the AJHL.

Michael Benning was impressive. Really fluid skater and was all over the place for the entire game. Tried doing too much when Canada was down in the third, but the entire team fell into that.

Shakir Mukhamadullin is HUGE. He moves well for a player this age with his frame. Definitely want to keep an eye on him for this draft.

Vasili Ponomaryov was one of Russia's best forwards. Hard on the forecheck, physical but not needing to run every player through the boards. Hits were hockey plays, not a junior age player running around trying to smash everything (can't say the same for a lot of the Canadian forecheck).

Alexander Pashin was exceptional. He's short but stocky and really zippy. He seems like a kid that will grow a bit and be a really strong middle-6 forward. Good anticipation and ridiculous shot. He wasn't the crash and bang forechecker like Pono, but was great at reading passes and picking them off just inside the offensive blueline then taking the puck to the net. Not great on the back check, but it was Team Russian in an exhibition game so... nobody was great on the back check.

Canada East vs USA is here on Wednesday, I'm hoping to get to that one as well. Brisson and Colangelo are on my radar. Then I'm hoping to make the run down to Dawson on Sunday for the finals (of course, the company Christmas party is on Saturday so I can't go to the semis).

I saw a DEL game in Germany back in 2005 - the Augsburger Panthers. One of my cousins took me to the game. The area was tiny, maybe 5,000 people if I had to guess.

But, the building was rocking the whole time. There was a supporter section, where just like in soccer, all fans were chanting and singing. It was pretty cool. The vibe that I got was that hockey isn't as large as other sports in Germany, but has a pretty strong following.

Yeah kinda left the same impression on me. SSS, but he looked like a floater and I'm not sure he's that great of a skater. Didn't look like he anticipated plays very well.

Michael Benning was impressive. Really fluid skater and was all over the place for the entire game. Tried doing too much when Canada was down in the third, but the entire team fell into that.
He had a nightmare game last night, but I can see the appeal. His scoring numbers are excellent, even on a stacked team.

Another undersized defenseman caught my eye though on Canada West - Ethan Edwards. Scored a sweet goal on an otherwise poor showing by his team. I guess I have a thing for Michigan commits.

They have a young blueline but the 4 underagers are all pretty intriguing.

Yup. Really intrigued by him as well. Need to see more of him.

Edwards caught my eye too. Didn't get the same utilization as Benning or Lund or Henry (the latter two are older). His skating reminds me of Ville Heinola - lots of opening of the hips and conservation of motion. He's really small though - like, REALLY small. TC has him listed at 5'9" and 166, and I suspect that's with all the gear on.

It is really big... in places. Then other places nothing at all. Austria is the same in my experience. Massive in some areas.

It helps that Mannheim have been the most successful team in the modern era of German hockey too!

Had the pleasure of watching a few DEL games in Berlin. Really fun to go to.
