Elvis Presley was supposed to play the facility the day (or next day) he died.

I used to go to a ton of Indianapolis Checkers games at the unfortunately razed Market Square Arena. It was the site of Elvis' last concert and there were fresh flowers placed daily there 10 years after his death.

I believe that we can now definitively say that the horse racing thread has been derailed.

Forty Niner has died at the age of 35. What a long wonderful life. I didn't know he was alive.

A career mark of 19 11-2-0 and more than $2.7 million earned. Among his wins were four Grade I victories including the Travers and Haskell. He was named Champion 2-year-old as Eclipse Award winner in North America in 1987.

He placed in both the 1988 Florida Derby and Kentucky Derby, the latter to Winning Colors a filly who won for a rare time in the upset. He was in the 17-hole, the only post position never to win a Derby and ran a fantastic race in a game effort.

For those of us who remember, the Haskell and Travers and two remarkable finishes against Seeking the Gold.

We are an eclectic group of varied taste.

Speaking of Elvis Presley, I brought this up a few days ago after Don Shula passed, but Elvis was in attendance in the WFL's Memphis Southmen's first home game after the franchise moved from Toronto. The Southmen was the franchise that was the recipient of Miami Dolphins' Larry Csonka, Paul Warfield and Jim Kiick.

I didn't know Shula had passed. Those Dolphin teams in 72 and 73 were amazing. The WFL defections of Csonka, Kiick and Warfield derailed the Dolphin's quest for dynastic status.

The second post has been updated to include the following...

OREGON: Grant's Pass has been approved for two brief meets this year. Including other smaller fair meets which have been canceled this year, this is the prime racing track in the state after Portland Meadows close operations permanently last year.

TEXAS: Race tracks could open May 22 but cards have yet to be drawn through May 18. Fans will be permitted but up to 25% of capacity.

LOUISIANA: Delta Downs and Evangeline Downs both have casinos and each will open May 20.

NEW YORK: Belmont to open June 4. Finger Lakes to open July 13. The Belmont Stakes could be run June 20 or June 27 but that is not verified.

MARYLAND: It appears that while Maryland made news on Saturday for the Preakness that there is still work to be done pertaining to the schedules of all three tracks including Timonium which is the state's fair meet. Pimlico, which was supposed to be currently running, will be shifted to October with the Preakness. Which means Laurel will start to race at some point by the end of May if all things go well and maybe as early as May 22.

ONTARIO: Woodbine announced today the the Queen's Plate will be run Sept. 12. Also, the Woodbine Oaks and The Plate Trial will be held on Saturday, August 15. The track's opening date will likely be some time this month but the announcement is expected Wednesday of this week.

Yup. Some are saying August 1 with the Travers is a possible date. Others June 20 if it is kept at 1 1/4 miles. Nothing but speculation of course.

@GKJ .

Just an FYI but Barclay Tagg has taken Tiz the Law to New York to train for the Belmont Stakes as his next race. There are two plans by NY that seem to be leading possibilities and one is June 20 with a shortened distance from 1 1/2 miles.

The Travers will be rescheduled to an unspecified date perhaps to Aug. 1.

All systems go. Expect the stakes schedule to be revealed in the forthcoming days and that of the Saratoga, too.

NYRA was not going to challenge the Breeders Cup because it would have been a lose+lose for New York and any chance of hosting in the future once the arena is built.

Illinois has a heartbeat and a pulse!

Arlington Surveys Horsemen About 30-Day Meet In August And September - Horse Racing News | Paulick Report

Officials at Arlington Park in suburban Chicago have begun surveying trainers about a possible 30-day race meet in August and September.

--------------------------
Arlington, which was approved for a 68-day meet and originally scheduled to open May 1, does not have a contract with the Illinois Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association. One of the issues is the availability and disbursement of purse money.

Arlington, which stands to gain more than $4 million from horsemen's funds because of the state's recapture law, wants to include the track's marquee Grade 1 races – the Arlington Million, Beverly D. and Secretariat Stakes – on the stakes schedule. The ITHA wants as much money as possible used for overnight purses and fears average daily purses will be under $100,000 when racing is resumed.

Yes. It will be large at 150 points to the winner followed by 60, 30 and 15 for the runner ups.

The field will be a maximum 16 per the conditions book.

Also, Saratoga starts July 16.

Tampa Bay will get eight more days of racing from the state of Florida. All days to be in June which means nine total. They have one existing day to fulfill fiscal policy on June 30 and also July 1. Then the track is dark until perhaps November.

King Guillermo is the first defection to the revamped Triple Crown. He will not go to New York. His owner, the ex-MLB player, made it seem the Kentucky Derby is the primary focus right now.

Ete Indien is Jersey-bound. Headed for the Haskell.

Looking at Lone Star's card, Mike Luzzi has mounts and will be in races against his son Lane. I think they squared off when the son was a bug. Mike probably isn't going to be riding for many more years. He usually doesn't ride outside NY unless it is something rare.

Woodbine opens June 6 and closes Dec. 13.

The Canadian Triple Crown starts there on Sep. 12. The second leg is at Fort Erie on Sep. 29. The third leg is back at Woodbine on October 24.

The lone Breeders Cup prep is Sep. 19.

There will be approximately $14 million in purses for the meet.

Luis Saez, who is the winningest rider in 2020, dropped his appeal for the DQ and eventual 15-day suspension from the Kentucky Derby controversy last year.

He could return June 4. However, he is under a possible suspension from New York for an unrelated race and by house rules has to serve it at Belmont.

Thus, he will not ride until June 4 at the earliest.
