Following the Breeders' Cup in Kentucky, most of the big named jockeys on the East coast will return to New York for November and into December and then head south to Gulfstream where they generally remain through the end of March or so.

Aqueduct racing in mid-winter can be tough with the winds, snow and other unpleasant elements. Here is the schedule of stakes:

  • Todd Pletcher sent out just one horse today, a rarity for him on a Saturday. He remains nine wins away from 5,000 in his career.
  • Mark Casse needs 19 wins to reach 3,000. He sends out 11 runners at Woodbine on Sunday.
Belmont (New York):
  • Handle: Over $11 million bet.
  • Card: All scheduled turf races were moved to dirt except for the feature (9th).
  • Race 9: Lead Guitar (Luis Saez/George Weaver) won the only turf race of the day.
  • Race 3: Performer (Joel Rosario/Shug McGaughey) won as the favorite and earned a 98 Beyer Figure in his return. The 4-year-old colt was out for the first time since winning the Grade 3 Discovery at Aqueduct in November. He improved to 6 5-0-1 including five straight wins. Much larger gigs await. Keep an eye on what develops.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. added three wins to his current total of 245 for 2020 which leads all jockeys in North America.
Meadowlands at Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Ferrin Peterson didn't carry her torrid streak from the past meet here but she won three times today. Her win total is now at 5 which is tied for second most.
  • Antonio Gallardo is 1-for-32 this meet. He had the fourth most wins at the recently closed summer Monmouth meet.
Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Closing day: Today closed the 65-day meet. There were 556 races compared to 661 in 2019. Total handle was $92,958,696 compared to the $104,200,290 from last year's 81-day meet.
  • Leading jockey: Carol Cedeno's 84 wins gave her the riders' crown for the sixth time in the past seven years.
  • Leading trainer: Jamie Ness recorded his sixth consecutive meet title with 52 winners.
Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Race 9: Venetian Harbor (Manny Franco/Richard Baltas) won the $200,000 Grade 2 Lexus Raven Run Stakes. The 3-year-old filly placed her last three races which were all graded stakes. She was a $205,000 purchase in 2019 and rode under Franco for the first time. She most likely will run next in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint.

  • Race 3: Champagne Bling (Armando Martinez/Kelli Martinez) won at 15-to-1. The husband-wife duo are based at Prairie Meadows (Iowa).
  • Tyler Gaffalione won twice today including becoming the third jockey in North America in 2020 to record 200 wins.
Gulfstream Park West (Florida):
  • Alberto Burgos, riding with a 5-pound bug, was a perfect 3 3-0-0 today including winning with a lone first time starter in the third race.
  • Race 9: Bodexpress (Emisael Jaramillo/Gustavo Delgado) who finished 13th in the 2019 Kentucky Derby and 5th in the 2020 Pegasus World Cup, won by more than 11 lengths in romp that could have been larger. The 4-year-old colt won for the third time in 16 starts with all three victories coming at Gulfstream Park West (four career starts). He was purchased for $37,000 in 2018 and has earned over $400,000
Hawthorne (Illinois):
  • Michael Reavis is a staggering 12 8-0-2 at the meet after winning with his lone starter today. He has been training since 1977 and has more than 2,000 wins.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Race 9: Warren's Showtime (Flavien Prat/Craig Lewis) won the $100,000 Grade 3 Autumn Miss as the favorite. The 3-year-old filly is 13 6-0-5. Lewis won for the 1,000th time in his 42-year career. He doesn't send out many horses annually

  • Ryan Hanson has only 53 wins in his young training career but today celebrated back-to-back victories. His 13th win in 2020 established a career high.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Leading riders: Justin Stein (101 wins) and Rafael Hernandez (100 wins) have separated themselves from the pack as they battle for the meet's supremacy. This should go down to the wire as the meet ends in December. Emma-Jayne Wilson is a distant third with 67 wins.
  • Mark Casse entered an exorbitant total of 14 horses in eight races and won four times. He ended the day 14 4-2-2. A member of both the U.S. and Canadian halls of Fame, Casse is 19 wins shy of 3,000 in his career.
  • Race 8: Souper Sensational (Patrick Husbands/Mark Casse) won the $120,000 Glorious Song Stakes for two-year-old fillies by 4 lengths after being sent off at 3-to-5. She is a daughter to Curlin who was purchased for $725,000 in 2019. She is 2-for-2 lifetime and has received attention from many for bigger things in the future.

  • Chad Brown entered seven horses in six races across three tracks and in two countries. He won once at each of the three tracks.
Belmont (New York):
  • Race 1: Luis Saez rode the winner, his 6th win out of his 16 most recent mounts. Quite the stretch.
  • Race 3: Devamani (Joel Rosario/Chad Brown) won the $150,000 Grade 2 Knickerbocker. Brown finished 1-2, both with French-breds, in a field of five and the $1 exacta paid $12,30 which is larceny considering the short field and that Brown, which has been said often, has to always be considered with turf racing in New York. Breaking the Rules (John Velazquez/Shug McGaughey) finished fourth as the favorite.
  • Race 6: Money in the Bank (Dylan Davis/Edmund Davis) gave the Brothers Davis a victory for the first time. The trainer was 3-for-100 (3%/33%) in his career with his others wins ridden by Eric Cancel (2) and Junior Alvarado (1). They combine to be the male half of the four children to ex-jockey and current trainer Robbie Davis's riding family whose daughters Katie and Jacqueline also ride.
  • Race 8: Horn of Plenty (Dylan Davis Rob Atras) won his debut, a $70,000 MSW. The owners are listed as Kathleen McClay and Norm Porter who purchased through a private owner. There is no indication they have other horses based on an Equibase search.
  • Race 9: Get Smokin (Javier Castellano/Thomas Bush) wired the field and ended a seven race losing streak by winning the $150,000 Grade 2 Hill Prince Stakes at 7-to-1. The 3-year-old gelding is now 2-for-10 lifetime. Decorated Invader (Joel Rosario/Christophe Clement), heavily bet at 1-to-2, placed.
  • Race 10: Dylan Davis concluded the card with his third victory.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Race 6: Kentucky Cool (Weston Hamilton/Robert Bailes) won at 16-to-1 and paid $35. The 2-year-old gelding (yup!) was out for the second time.
  • Race 7: Landing Zone (Angel Cruz/Claudio Gonzalez), a heavily-run 3-year-old filly, won for the 6th time in 18 starts and fourth in a row. She has raced nine times in both of her eligible years. Daphne Moon placed. That has to be a reference to the Frasier TV character,
  • Color scheme on the simulcast feeds: The all-block graphics from the Stronach tracks has been discussed. Similar displays with the colors being the main exception at Gulfstream, Golden Gate, Santa Anita and Laurel. But there has to be a better option than the different shades of pink. Come on Stronach and/or the Maryland Jockey Club who are also very prominent on the feed, get back to the orange-yellow and black. It was one of the best images.
Mountaineer (West Virginia):
  • Trainers: Jay Bernardini (48 wins) maintains a 1-win lead over Eddie Clouston at the meet which extends through December 23. Last year, Clouston had a 43-win advantage to take the meet's crown with Bernardini his closest challenger.
Gulfstream Park West (Florida):
  • Races 1-4: Favorites won each leg.
  • Race 5: Myfirstexwife (Leonel Reyes/Sandra Matier) won for the second time in 12 lifetime starts and paid $64.40 at 30-to-1 odds. That put a sizable dent into the all-favorites pick 5. The trainer, who is based in Delaware, won for the 53rd time in her career including 15 in 2020 which is her top mark. The horse is owned by Canadian-born Bruno Schickedanz who has over 2,000 wins to his name and who has built thousands of homes in Ontario and Texas.
  • Race 9: Shendam (Luca Panici/Juan Arriagada) won by two lengths and the victory enabled a bettor to cash a $.20 Pick 6 ticket worth $249,204. The winning sequence was 3-8-6-8-7-13. For someone this day, 13 is the luckiest of numbers.
Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Florent Geroux won three times.
  • Brad Cox finished 4 3-1-0. A solid day for a solid trainer.
  • Race 8: Inspector Frost (Florient Geroux/Brad Cox) won a $70,000 in his second lifetime race. owned by the international powerhouse Godolphin who purchased as the norm in a private sale. Both the rider and trainer won for the third time on the card, twice as a team.
  • Race 9: Blame Debbie (Manny Franco/Graham Motion) won the $125,000 Grade 3 Rood and Riddle Dowager Stakes. The favorite wired the field and paid $5.00.
  • Jockeys: Tyler Gaffalione leads the meet with 24 victors and is poised to win yet another riders' title at a Kentucky track. He has a 6-win lead over his closest competitor Florent Geroux.
  • Trainers: Brad Cox (11 wins) and Michael Maker (10 wins) are battling it out for top trainer at the meet.
  • Closing day: October 24 although the Breeders' Cup 2-day weekend November 6-7 may be part of the math.
Hawthorne (Illinois):
  • Michael Reavis placed with his lone starter, Though he didn't win, he is 13 8-1-2 (62%/85%) at the meet. He has been training since 1977 and has more than 2,000 wins.
Golden Gate (California):
  • Closing day: The meet closed. A new meet begins later this week and extends through December 13.
  • Kyle Frey had a strong day at 9 3-3-2. Eight times out of nine hitting the board.
  • Leading jockey: Kyle Frey with 47 wins, 20 more than his closest challenger.
  • Leading trainer: Jonathan Wong with 40 wins.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Bob Baffert was yet again incredible going 8 4-2-2 (50%/100%). He entered horses in five races and won four. He hit the board with all eight horses.
  • Abel Cedillo rode five times for Bob Baffert and finished 5 2-2-1.
  • Race 2: Himiko (Ricardo Gonzalez/Bob Baffert) finally broke her maiden, her fourth try, in a $55,000 MSW. The 3-year-old filly is a daughter to American Pharoah and was a $1,000,000 purchase in 2017 by Grand Farm Family (owners have limited history). Baffert finished 1-2 with As Times Goes By (Abel Cedillo/Bob Baffert), out for the second time, placing as the favorite. She also is a daughter to American Pharoah and owned by Irish-based heavyweights Tabor, Magnier and Smith.
  • Race 5: Much More Halo (Abel Cedillo/Bob Baffert), a $395,000 by a Saudi Prince, finally broke his maiden in his ninth try. Among the losses were five place spots including four of his past five races.
  • Race 7: Kalypso (Abel Cedillo/Bob Baffert) broke her maiden and wired the field in winning the $75,000 Anoakia Stakes. It was the third start for the2-yeart-old filly who was purchased in 2019 for $240,000 by Gary Hartunian and David Bernsen who have teamed in the past for graded stakes winners.
  • Race 9: Smooth Like Strait (Umberto Rispoli/Michael McCarthy) won the $200,000 Grade 2 Twilight Derby Stakes after being sent off the favorite. The 3-year-old colt has won three of four graded stakes in a 10-race career. He likes the big stage.
  • Race 10: Private Mission (Drayden Van Dyke/Bob Baffert) won a $55,000 MSW. The 2-year-old filly debuted to a victory after being purchased for $750,000 in 2019 by Baoma Corporation (Charles Chu -- GPS tracker). Frosteria (Abel Cedillo/Bob Baffert), a private purchase of Godolphin (United Arab Emirates). Baffert finsihed 1-2 for the second time today.
  • Handle: More than $8 million bet.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Mark Casse has won eight of 15 races at Woodbine spanning the past two days. He is 16 wins shy of 3,000 lifetime. His sizzling barn was cooled in the Neartic as his runners finished 4th, 6th and 7th.
  • Race 1: Mark Casse's hot barn finished 1-2 and what seems not abnormal with trainers who put mutiple horses in a race, the higher odds (11-to-1) beat the favorite (4-to-5).
  • Race 2: Mark Casse won again!
  • Race 3: A 9-to-1 shot ridden by the meet's leading rider Justin Stein topped the ticket.
  • Race 4: Mia's Extortionist (Ismael Mosqueira/Sandra Dominguez) rocked the oval with a 47-to-1 longshot victory and paid $96.90. The $2 double was $863.20. The rider was 2-for-111 (2%) in 2020 with his wins coming at Fort Erie (Ontario) and Fairmont Park (Illinois).
  • Race 5: Say the Word (Emma-Jayne Wilson/Gail Cox) won the $300,000 Grade 1 Northern Dancer Turf Stakes at 1 1/2 lengths. Though he won earlier this year at Saratoga, this was his first graded stakes victory after five failed attempts. Sir Sahib (Justin Stein/Kevin Attard) placed. The $2 exacta paid handsomely at $78.30 with two 5-to-1 shots finishing 1-2. Following the race, Wilson said that Junior Alvarado, who rode Say the Word earlier this year at Saratoga (New York) to victory, made suggestions to trainer Cox to pass along to the rider as to how to handle the horse and what she could expect. She followed instructions perfectly and won a $300,000 Grade I. She also replied that though jockeys are in competition they also help each other. The track analyst told her "He gets the assist, you get the goal." Suffice to say, that is an Ontario-centric remark. Good stuff.

  • Race 6: Derzkii (Emma-Jayne Wilson/Carlos Grant) rallied strongly. The rider went back-to-back.
  • Race 7: Etoile (Rafael Hernandez/Chad Brown) won the $600,000 Grade I E.P. Taylor (turf) by holding off a charging 41-to-1 shot Court Return (Daisuke Fukumoto/Josie Carroll). The jockey and trainer won this race for the first time. Brown is a master on turf in the U.S. It was the 12th graded stakes win for the rider which leads this meet. The 4-year-old French-bred is 4-for-10 lifetime and was purchased for more than $1,000,000 in part by Peter Brant in December 2019.

  • Race 8: Cash Dividend (Luis Contreras/Denyse McClachrie) won by a head and paid $10.90 in winning from the 8 slot, the furthest outside.
  • Race 9: Silent Poet (Justin Stein/Nicholas Gonzalez) won the $250,000 Grade 2 Neartic Stakes. The 5-year-old gelding is 4-for-5 in 2020 and 10-for-18 lifetime. Gonzalez's wife Martha passed away with multiple forms of cancer earlier this month and a moment of silence was held at the track then. The husband and wife team have amassed earnings of more than $35 million in 35 years together. As the winner crossed the finish line, the track announcer said "This one's for you, Martha." Nice touch.

  • Race 10: Helium (Emma-Jayne Wilson/Mark Casse) won the $100,000 Display Stakes for 2-year-olds. The winner is 2-for-2 lifetime. Both jockey and trainer won for the third time on the card. Casse is 16 wins shy of 3,000.
  • Race 11: Cheeky Pint (Kazushi Kimura/Donald MacRae) won the finale at 2-to-1. More than $1,000,000 was bet into the last race.
  • Handle: Over $6.7 million bet.

Finger Lakes (New York):
  • Race 2: Dublinornothin (Tammi Piermarini/Karl Grusmark) won for the third straight time and is now 17 5-5-5 lifetime. The New York-bred is ridden and trained by long-time veterans. Piermarini is the third winningest female jockey in North America history and Grusmark has been training since 1965. Both had much of their successes at Suffolk Downs (Mass.).
Meadowlands at Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Closing day is Saturday: Today was the penultimate day at the short meet. Saturday will be the last day of T-bred racing in New Jersey until 2021.
  • Jersey Joe Bravo is 38% this meet.
  • Leading rider: Jose Ferrer with 11 wins.
  • Leading trainer: Wayne Potts with 6 wins. He was tied for sixth most at the much longer Monmouth summer meet.
Parx (Pennsylvania):
  • Luis Ocasio rode a natural hat trick and finished the day 7 3-2-1.
Thistledown (Ohio):
  • Closing day: Today concluded the meet. The track re-opens in 2021 on an unnamed date.
  • Belterra (Cincinnati) closed October 9. The track re-opens in 2021 on an unnamed date.
  • Mahoning Valley (Youngstown area) opens October 23.
Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Leading rider: Tyler Gaffalione is +7 over Florent Geroux.
  • Leading trainers: Brad Cox (11 wins), Michael Maker (10 wins) and Steve Asmussen (9 wins). Cox is a splendid 37%. The big boys are 1-2-3.
  • Closing day: October 24.

  • Todd Pletcher won in New York and Kentucky today which brings his lifetime total of victories to 4,993. Could he net #5,000 on the big stage next weekend at the Breeders' Cup? Big time trainers attract the big time stage. Only seven trainers have more lifetime wins and with over $395 million earned, no one has reached more purse money.

  • Steve Asmussen entered horses in Kentucky, Indiana and Oklahoma. He won at each. He now has 9,053 wins. He is 392 away from tying the all-time leader Dale Baird.
Belmont (New York):
  • Handle: $6,000,000.
  • Jose Ortiz leads all riders at the meet with 29 wins.
  • Junior Alvarado, oft-mentioned by me, is not only third in wins but has the third highest winning percentage and is third in money earned. He is having a solid meet.
Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Tyler Gaffalione won for the 20th time this meet. He leads all riders. The kid is good.
  • Leading trainers: Brad Cox (11 wins), Michael Maker (11 wins) and Steve Asmussen (10 wins). Cox is a splendid 34%. The big boys are 1-2-3.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Leading jockeys: Justin Stein (103 wins) and Rafael Hernandez (102 wins). The closeness includes purse money, winning percentage and in-the-money mark. Someone will prevail as the defacto leading rider to replace the retired Eurico da Silva.
  • Handle: $3.4 million.

States are beginning to formalize their meets for 2021. From what I have seen this week:

ARIZONA 2021:

  • Arizona fixed its issues and a 2021 racing schedule has been released at least in conjunction with Turf Paradise. The state is the exception with at least one existing track to not operate in the second half of 2020 or fulfill its original meet. Turf Paradise will run January 2 thru May 1, 2021.
KENTUCKY 2021:
Turfway Park

  • Jan. 1 – March 28, Thursday to Sunday (Thursdays all marked as “optional”)
  • Dec. 1 – Dec. 21, Wednesday to Sunday (Wednesdays all marked as “optional,” no racing Dec. 24 or 25)
Keeneland
  • April 1 – April 23, Wednesday to Sunday
  • Oct. 8 – Oct. 30, Wednesday to Sunday
Churchill Downs
  • April 24 – June 26, Wednesday to Sunday (Wednesdays all listed as “Optional,” except April 24)
  • Additional spring meet cards to be held on April 27 (Tuesday) and May 31 (Monday)
  • No racing May 2 (Sunday) -- The day following the Kentucky Derby is traditionally dark.
  • Sept. 15 – Oct. 3, Wednesday to Sunday (Wednesdays listed as “optional”)
  • Nov. 3 – Nov. 28, Wednesday to Sunday
Ellis Park
  • June 27 – Sept. 1 (all Mondays through Thursdays listed as “optional”)
Kentucky Downs
  • Sept. 5, 6, 8, 9, 11, 12
SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA 2021
  • Santa Anita: Dec. 23, 2020-June 22, 2021
  • Los Alamitos: June 23-July 6
  • Del Mar: July 7-Sept. 7
  • Los Alamitos: Sept. 8-28
  • Santa Anita: Sept. 29-Nov. 2
  • Del Mar: Nov. 3-30 ----- BREEDERS' CUP: November 5-6.
  • Los Alamitos Dec. 1-14
  • Santa Anita (for simulcast status only, no live racing) Dec. 15-21
NORTHERN CALIFORNIA 2021:
  • The board approved the racing schedule at Golden Gate Fields through June 15, but did not discuss racing dates for the summer and fall fair circuit or the second half of 2021. It is not clear whether the county fairs will be operate amusements and associated events because of the coronavirus pandemic. This year, the Alameda County Fair meeting at Pleasanton conducted racing, but fair racing was not held at Ferndale, Fresno, Sacramento, or Santa Rosa. Some of those racing dates were transferred to Golden Gate Fields. (Source: DRF)
MARYLAND 2021
  • Dates were approved today though seemingly not specified. Timonium, the fair track which did not run in 2020 due to the C-virus, is scheduled to operate next year and could have expanded dates to a maximum of 10.

Where breeding -- and certainly volume -- occurs is always an important indicator to the industry. Today, the Jockey Club released its 2020 numbers by state. Pennsylvania numbers have risen sharply. Good things continue to happen in Maryland.

  • Handicapping: A favorite angle has been to use the only first-time starter in a race. While it doesn't always win -- no strategy is foolproof -- almost simultaneously at Woodbine and Santa Anita did the only first-timers win both races.
Belmont (New York):
  • Todd Pletcher sent out four horses and won three times including a natural hat trick which is a rare feat at any track for a trainer but especially a prominent one such at Belmont. He is the 8th all-time winning trainer in North America with 4,996.
  • Race 9: An energetic duel between Luis Saez, who won, and John Velazquez, who placed. Johnny V. trailed, inched ahead in the stretch and then was passed.
  • Race 10: John Velazquez must have found his inner spinach and overcame any torment from the prior race with a victory in the finale. He has won over 6,200 time and is 17th all-time for a reason... or two.
  • Handle: Just under $9 million.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Race 9: Tizanillusion (J. Acosta/Miguel Vera) won as the favorite at even money though with a morning line of 20-to-1. The reason is 12 of the 16 horses entered were scratched.
  • Race 7: Jaxon Traveler (Johan Rosado/Steve Asmussen) improved to 2 2-0-0. The Maryland bred could be put on the Kentucky Derby preps list. He won his first race at Pimlico.
Mahoning Valley (Ohio):
  • Opening day: The meet opened. Sonny Leon rode three winners.
Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Tyler Gaffalione, the meet's leading rider, won for the 22nd time this meet after a 2-win day. His closest challenger is Florent Geroux who is seven behind. He will win his third Keeneland riding title. The kid is good.

  • Leading trainers: Brad Cox (13 wins), Michael Maker (12 wins) and Steve Asmussen (11 wins). Cox is a splendid 37%. The big boys are 1-2-3.
  • Weather delay: Held up the 7th race.
  • Turf Races: Races 4 and 7 were off the turf while 9 was on. Same will occur for Saturday unless there is an unscheduled adjustment. Keeneland has been cautious with track maintenance due to the Breeders' Cup November 5-6.
  • Martin Garcia suffered a consequential injury on Sunday and today it was announced that he will not ride until the start of the Oaklawn (Arkansas) meet on January 22.
Hawthorne (Illinois):
  • Race 6: A 24-to-1 and an 86-to-1 finished 1-2 and produced a $1 exacta worth $475. The winner paid $58.40. The place horse returned $52.20.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Race 2: It was a race of four... make that two! Bob Baffert finished 1-2 with a separation of 30 lengths between 2nd and 3rd. An unofficial match race. Beautiful Gift (Abel Cedillo/Bob Baffett) defeated Flash Magic (Flavien Prat/Bob Baffert) in a battle of 2-year-old fillies. The winner is owned by Baoma Corporation (developers of the GPS navigational system).
  • Handle: $5 million.

  • Todd Pletcher entered just two horses and remains four wins shy of 5,000.
  • Joel Rosario is nine wins away from riding 3,000 winners.
  • Mark Casse is 13 wins shy of 3,000.
  • Philadelphia/Delaware trainers excelled in big races today in New York and Maryland.
  • Robby Albarado is now 0-for-20 since winning the Preakness Stakes and has just that one win with his past 34 mounts. Still, that may be the ride of the year.
Belmont (New York):
  • Handle: $13,000,000+ bet today.
  • New York, New York: A card filled with nothing but New York breds.
  • Card: Eight of the 11 races held purses $125,000 or more.
  • Race 11: Steelersfanforlife (Junior Alvarado/Leah Gyarmati) won the finale by splitting horses at 9-to-1 and ending the day with a thrilling victory. The $.20 Pick 6 paid over $33,000.
  • Race 10: Mr. Buff (Junior Alvarado/John Kimmel) wired the field in the $175,000 Empire Handicap in the biggest purse of the day. The 6-year-old won for the 15th time in 40 starts and has earned $1.2 million. Alvarado seemed especially excited winning the race and planted a smooch on the winner:

  • Race 9: Collegeville Girl (Joel Rosario/Richie Vega) won the $125,000 Iroquois Stakes at 23-to-1, the second largest odds on the board. One of at least three Philadelphia-based trainers who excelled in large races today.
  • Races 2 and 3: Daniel Velazquez sent two horses out and both won consecutive $150,000 stakes races. These are his first stakes wins. He is based at Philadelphia Parx and Delaware and had never won a race at Belmont prior to today. His only other win at either Belmont or Aqueduct was in 2015.
Track Starts1st2nd3rd% (Win/ITM)
Belmont620133%/50%
Aqueduct711414%/86%

  • Two-timers: Junior Alvarado, Joel Rosario, Irad Ortiz, Jr. and Kendrick Carmouche each rode two winners.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr., who missed the first few race days due to multiple suspensions from rides earlier in the calendar and then testing positive for C-virus, is magically fourth in the standings with 18 wins. He is North America's reigning Jockey of the Year.
Meadowlands at Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Closing day: New Jersey is closed to live T-bred racing until 2021.
  • Combined handle at the two recent meets: The average daily handle increased 20.8% to $3,807,082 daily compared to $3,151,201 last year.
  • Joe Bravo had six mounts and won three times (6 3-2-1). He ended the brief meet a tremendous 19 8-4-2 (42%/74%). Joe Bravo keeps doing Jersey Joe things in his home state.
  • Jose Ferrer, at the age of 56, won the riders' crown with 11 wins.
  • Wayne Potts won the trainers' title with 7 wins.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Maryland, My Maryland: Maryland Million Day as $1,000,000 was available for only state breds. Seven of the 12 races held purses of $100,000+.
  • Beyer Figures:
    • Monday Morning Qb -- 96
    • Fiya -- 96
    • Hello Beautiful -- 96
    • Karan's Notion -- 89
    • Pretty Good Year -- 89
  • Race 11: Monday Morning Qb (Sheldon Russell/Butch Reid) routed the field in the $150,000 Maryland Million Classic Stakes at 6-to-1. The 3-year-old was coming off an 11th place finish at Pimlico. Quite the improvement. Following the race, Reid commented “We’ll digest this one a little bit. I’m hoping we can find one more 3-year-old race before the end of the year but they’re going to be difficult to find. I’ve taken some stalls at Palm Meadows this winter so he’ll probably end up down there with us.” Another Philly-based trainer had success on this day.
  • Race 10: Karan's Notion (Yomar Ortiz/Nancy Heil) wired the field and pulled an upset at 16-to-1 to give the trainer her third win of 2020, her highest figure since 2010. Heil was winless with 50 starters in 2019. Her 19% winning percentage this year is a personal best since 1983. A fantastic quote by the trainer-owner following the victory sums up the hardwork and dedication of many in the industry who rarely get the attention deserved:
“I don't believe it's real yet. I've been training 50-some years, but I've never had a [Maryland Million] eligible horse. When he was a baby – he had these long legs, like spider legs – and we said, 'I think he's going to be the one... NEVER GIVE UP'”
  • Race 8: Hello Beautiful (Sheldon Russell/Brittany Russell) annihilated the field by more than 11 lengths in winning the $100,000 Maryland Million Distaff Handicap. The husband-wife jockey-trainer combo have much success as a team. The 3-year-old filly is 11 5-2-1 including a marvelous 5 5-0-0 on Laurel dirt. An excellent, catchy storyline (good race call injected with some humor).

  • Race 6: Fiya (Trevor McCarthy/Tom Albertrani) improved to 6 4-1-1 and won for the fourth straight time after winning the Maryland Million Turf Sprint Handicap as expected at 1-to-9. The 3-year-old gelding has mostly wired the field in all four races but today was the first time he was sent off the favorite. The horse is a $400,000 purchase by Robert Masiello who has ties to New York racing.
  • Trevor McCarthy rode three consecutive winning mounts for a 3-win day.
  • Sheldon Russell rode four winners to complete an extraordinary day.
858ef3d01f8b45bdb91d452148ac1939.jpg

Gulfstream Park West (Florida):

  • Race 6: Pro Quality (Luca Panici/Ralph Catanese) at 8-to-1 edged a 4-to-5 shot in a very gamed effort.
  • Michael Maker trained three winners including two today at GPW.
Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Closing day: Today was the last day of the meet. Keeneland re-opens for Breeders' Cup weekend November 6-7. Churchill Downs operates as the prime Kentucky track from October 25 - November 29.
  • Handle: In the 17-day meet from October 2 - October 24, the track handled over $148 million or an average of $8.7 million which was down from 2019 from comparable dates. Many tracks have seem rises in handle from 2020 to 2019 even with little or no spectators.
  • Tyler Gaffalione won the riders' title with 24 victories. It is his third Keeneland title and fifth consecutive title at Kentucky tracks.
  • Brad Cox added two wins to his eventual trainers' title of 15 victories.
  • Race 6: Joe Frazier (Joe Talamo/Brad Cox) debuted to a nice win as he knocked out the competition by three lengths at 7-to-2. The horse is owned by Ike and Dawn Thrash husband-wife Mississippians in the real estate business. Ike was a former college baseball player at Tulane University (Louisiana).
Hawthorne (Illinois):
  • Francisco Arrieta rode three winners. He is running away as the meet leader with 22 wins.
  • Karl Broberg trained three winners. He is among three trainers with a meet-high 8 wins (also Hugh Robertson and Michael Reavis). Broberg is the second winningest trainer in North America in 2020.
Remington (Oklahoma):
  • Race 7: Tapsolution (Stewart Elliott/Steve Asmussen) gave the jockey his 5,037th win and the trainer his 9,057th victory.
Golden Gate (California):
  • Kyle Frey rode three winners.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Race 9: Classier (Abel Cedillo/Bob Baffert) debuted to victory and wired the field at 7-to-2. The 2-year-old colt by Empire Maker was purchased last year for $775,000 for the conglomerate known as the Avengers. Baffert sent out two in the race. Man Friday (Drayden Van Dyke), a son to American Pharoah purchased for $325,000, failed to hit the board for the third time in three starts.
  • Race 8: Biddy Duke (Juan Hernandez/Doug O'Neill) won the $100,000 Grade 3 Senator Ken Maddy Stakes at 9-to-1.
  • Race 6: The Stiff (Flavien Prat/Michael McCarthy) won as the longest shot at 20-to-1. Prat does not have too many overlooked horses at that figure and rode the 3-year-old, who was out for the 14th time, for the first time. Wow!
  • Race 4: Nu Pi Lambda (Mike Smith/Carla Gaines) won at 7-to-1. Smith rode the filly to her first win in six lifetime starts.
  • Race 2: Jessica Pyfer rode her fourth winner in 16 tries. The 22-year-old is step-daughter to trainer Phil D'Amato.
  • Handle: $7 million.
  • Closing day: Tomorrow is the last day of racing this meet. Del Mar operates October 31 through November 29. Southern Cal racing then is hosted by Los Alamitos from December 4 - 20. Santa Anita reopens December 23.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Race 10: Belichick (Luis Contreras/Josie Carroll) won the 1 1/2 mile $400,000 Breeders' Stakes which was the third leg of the Canadian Triple Crown bid of stable mate Mighty Heart (Daisuke Fukumoto/Josie Carroll) who was caught in any early speed battle with a 101-to-1 shot then eventually faded. The winner paid $8.70. The $.20 super paid over $3,000. Mighty Heart was attempting to become the 13th horse to win the Crown. Belichick, lightly raced with his fourth start, broke his maiden with this victory. Carroll swept the Triple Crown.

  • Kazushi Kimura rode nine times and won three races. The other six rides failed to hit the board. A hit or miss day.
  • Justin Stein added two wins to his meet lead of 107 which is now five ahead of his closest challenger Rafael Hernandez.
  • Mark Casse entered 13 horses in six races and won two. He finished 13 2-1-1. Certainly not his best day but winning two of six isn't awful either.
  • Handle: $6.5 million.

Keeneland wrapped up yesterday (Oct. 24). M and M Racing, which won the meet at Oaklawn (Arkansas) earlier this year, prevailed as top owners.

A good card on tap for opening day at Churchill Downs. All 2-year-old races with some lofty purses for the babies and potential future stars.

Belmont (New York):
  • Handle: Exceeded $10,000,000. NYRA handled about $32,000,000 the past three days.
  • Jose Ortiz-Chad Brown teamed three times and all resulted in wins.
  • Race 5: Bay Storm (Javier Castellano/Jonathan Thomas) won her second lifetime race. She was a $400,000 in-training purchase and was stabled at Bridlewood Farm in Florida where Thomas is employed. Kantharos, the sire, excels with two-year-olds as evidenced by his 14th winner of 2020.
  • Race 4 and 6: Won by Jose Ortiz/Chad Brown/Klaravich Stables, the latter two defending North America Eclipse Award winners for their categories (top trainer and owner).
  • Race 8: Tapit Today (Jose Ortiz/Chad Brown) won the $200,000 Grade 3 Athenia Stakes. The 5-year-old mare won for the fourth time but this was her first graded stakes wins after three losses in Kentucky, New Jersey and Florida. Ortiz and Brown had a spectacular Sunday.

Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Opening day: The meet runs for 24 racing days into November 29.
  • Card: "Stars of Tomorrow" program which is limited to 2-year-olds. Future stars on tap.
  • Race 1: Big Union (Florent Geroux/Brad Cox), a $260,000 purchase earlier this year at the Ocala (FL) 2-year-old sale, was sent off the favorite and held on for victory.
  • Race 2: Army Wife (Tyler Gaffalione/Michael Maker), a $190,000 purchase at the Ocala (FL) sale of 2-year-olds earlier this year, broke her maiden in her fourth attempt.
  • Race 3: Malloy (Julien Leparoux/Wayne Catalano) won at 6-to-1. Yarmomy (Tyler Gaffalione/Ian Wilkes), the lone first time starter which is a preferred betting angle of mine, was sent off 27-to-1 and now we know why. She had nothing. Scrub that video from my memory bank.
  • Race 4: Spicy Marg (Gerardo Corrales/Wesley Ward) was sent off the favorite and won as the only filly in the race. Keep an eye on how she develops but to beat colts/geldings at this stage sends a signal. She was sired by Into Mischief who has had an exceptional 2020. Ward's other runner finished third. Ward with 2-year-olds is magic and is 29% in 2020 (24% lifetime). He could have had the exacta but an 86-to-1 shot interrupted that possibility.

  • Race 5: Ultimate Badger (Joe Talamo/Dale Romans) won. Romans is a 12% trainer this year but 16% with 2-year-olds.
  • Race 6: Clairiere (Ricardo Santana, Jr./Steve Asmussen) was the lone first-time starter -- that's more like it (see race #3) -- and paid $9.20 in victory. She was a private sale to Stonestreet Stable. The lucrative outfit made their fortune in Kendall-Jackson wines.

  • Race 7: Miss Adeline (Edgar Morales/Adolfo Macias) paid $11.00 in winning. Miss Adeline was sired by Grade I winner Big Blue Kitten, a $2.9 million earner, who had an offspring win for the first time (24 total starts from 12 horses by my count). Today's winner was purchased for the incredible price of $2,500 in 2019 and broke her maiden today in an $85,000 purse. The trainer is based in Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky.
  • Race 8: King Fury (Brian Hernandez, Jr./Kenny McPeek) won the $98,000 Street Sense Overnight Stakes. The son to Curlin was purchased for the high sum of $950,000 in 2019. The colt, named after boxer Tyson Fury, is 2-for-3 lifetime with the only loss a bad outing in the Futurity at Keeneland where he may head next for the Breeders' Cup. Per Marty McGee (DRF)'s Twitter:
King Fury got a 79 Beyer Speed Figure from his Sunday win for
@KennyMcPeek in the Street Sense at #ChurchillDowns; highest of the 11-race Stars of Tomorrow card. Coach got a 71 in winning the Rags to Riches for
@bradcoxracing
  • Race 9: Camp Hope (Brian Hernandez. Jr./Kenny McPeek) was the lone first-time starter -- see races #3 and #6 -- and won at 10-to-1. The $2 exacta paid $751.20 when a 31-to-1 shot placed. The winner cost $200,000 in 2019.
  • Race 10: Coach (Florent Geroux/Brad Cox) cost the paltry sum of $65,000 but is now 3 3-0-0 lifetime after winning this $98,000 Rags to Riches Overnight Stakes
  • Race 11: King's Ovation (Rafael Bejarano/Dale Romans) won at 26-to-1. The winner was purchased for $200,000 earlier this year. The $.50 Pick 4 paid over $11,000. The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $90,000.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Closing day: The last day of racing this meet. Del Mar operates October 31 through November 29. Southern Cal racing then is hosted by Los Alamitos from December 4 - 20. Santa Anita reopens December 23.
  • Leading Jockey: Flavien Prat led all riders with 27 wins.
  • Leading Trainers: Bob Baffert and Peter Miller led all trainers with 11 wins apiece.
  • Race 11: More than $2 million was in the Pick 6 pool after $1.9 million was added. All 29 winners received $56,656.
  • Race 9: Maxim Rate (Umberto Rispoli/Simon Callaghan) won the Grade 2 $200,000 Goldikova Stakes.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Race 1: Easy Time (Rafael Hernandez/Mark Casse) debuted to a relatively easy win in a $126,000 purse. The 2-year-old was a $250,000 purchase earlier this year at the Ocala sale in Florida.
  • Race 6: The two longest shots finished 1-2.
  • Race 7: The longest shot won at 21-to-1. The $1 double paid $438.55.
  • Race 8: Merveilleux (Rafael Hernandez/Kevin Attard) won the $250,000 Wonder Where Stakes.
  • Justin Stein added three wins to his meet lead of 110.

Kyoto Racecourse (Kyoto, Japan):

  • Contrail (Yuichi Fukunaga/Yoshito Yahagi) became the first undefeated winner of the Japanese Triple Crown after winning the Kikuka Sho which is 1 7/8 miles roughly. He owns a 7 7-0-0 record. Contrail was challenged throughout the stretch but battled hard to make history. His maternal grandfather is Unbridled's Song and his paternal granddaddy is Sunday Silence. Last week, Daring Tact became the sixth filly to win the Japanese Triple Tiara. Contrail became the 8th winner of the Triple Crown and first since 2011.

Finger Lakes (New York):
  • Race 2: Little Maddy Brown (Luis Perez/Stacy Torelli) was the lone first-time starter in the race, the longest shot on the board and he prevailed at 27-to-1 to pay $60.00. Once again, the lone first-time starter approach pays well when it wins.
  • Race 7: Blue Gator (Reylu Gutierrez/Michael Maker) won the $218,000 58th running of the New York Breeders' Futurity Stakes. The 2-year-old New York bred colt who was purchased for $110,000 earlier this year is 2-for-2 lifetime having won at Belmont. Maker's barn is red-hot as he has won 5 of 11 races the past three days covering six tracks in four states. There was a lone first-time starter at 47-to-1 who showed nothing. The $218,000 purse is large especially for a Monday.

Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint
Latest Defections: Wyfire, Aloha Star
Latest Additions: Lipizzaner, Momos, Windy City Red
Wesley Ward's Golden Pal will battle Jackie's Warrior for the role of the biggest favorite on Friday. The impressive sprinter looks special in a division that lacks a clear second choice. Europeans have not fared well in Breeders' Cup Turf Sprints, and it will be interesting to see who they wind up sending.

Gamine will be favored despite a wide array of opinions surrounding this talented filly. Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf
Latest Defections: Magic Attitude, Jolie Olimpica
Latest Additions: None
Star Europeans Tarnawa and Magical are both questionable for this spot as they could run in the Turf. Among those certain to run, Rushing Fall is the horse to beat. The world-class mare is as consistent as they come, and her only question mark is possible distance limitation. European Cayeene Pepper, Graham Motion's Mean Mary and former F&M Turf winner Sistercharlie all could play major roles in this stellar race as well.

Breeders' Cup Sprint
Latest Defections: Flagstaff, Funny Guy, Matera Sky
Latest Additions: Jasper Prince, Pingxiang, Bon Raison
Multiple G1 winner Vekoma likely will choose the Sprint over the Dirt Mile and will be a deserving favorite if he does. Steve Asmussen's dangerous trio of Yaupon, Nashville and Echo Town will look to challenge for the top spot. Peter Miller's C Z Rocket will try to keep his impressive winning streak going, and Patrick Biancone's Diamond Oops will try to duplicate his recent strong effort over this track.

Breeders' Cup Mile
Latest Defections: Mo Forza, Champers Elysees, Lope Y Fernandez
Latest Additions: Siskin, Casa Creed
The Breeders' Cup Mile took a hit when Pinatubo was retired earlier this month and lost another key runner when Mo Forza was withdrawn from consideration with a minor injury. The race gained a major contender when the connections of top European Siskin announced he would come to America for his final race. Siskin and other top Euro Kameko will battle for favoritism with the Chad Brown duo of Digital Age and defending champion Uni.

Breeders' Cup Distaff
Latest Defections: Shedaresthedevil, Vexatious
Latest Additions: None
The Distaff field continues to get smaller by the week. The strength of the race now depends on Swiss Skydiver. A matchup between the Preakness winner and Monomoy Girl would bring excitement to this race. If Swiss Skydiver heads to the Classic, then Monomoy Girl will be the shortest-priced runner in the Breeders' Cup.

Breeders' Cup Turf
Latest Defections: Japan, Serpentine, Factor This
Latest Additions: Lord North, Originaire, Donjah
Aidan O'Brien's Mogul has been confirmed for the Turf, but the world awaits the decision on his seven-time Group 1 winner Magical. O'Brien's Japan and Serpentine are now unlikely to run, and Factor This from the Brad Cox barn will be pointed to the Mile. If Magical does not ship for the Breeders' Cup, then favoritism could go in a variety of directions. Mogul, Lord North and Tarnawa, who could run in the F&M Turf, all could vie for the leading role with the streaking Channel Maker.

Breeders' Cup Classic
Latest Defections: Happy Saver, Midcourt
Latest Additions: Title Ready
Other than Swiss Skydiver's major decision between the Distaff and the Classic, the field for the marquee event appears set and it is one of the strongest groups in recent years. Improbable, Tiz the Law, Maximum Security, Authentic, Tom's d'Etat and Swiss Skydiver all have the credentials to win this race, and each horse has the tactical speed and versatility to work out a good trip. Those who take a stand will be rewarded as the favorite should be in the 7-2 to 4-1 range.

Parx (Pennsylvania):
  • Race 5: The $1 Pick 3 paid a massive $5,120.50.
Gulfstream Park West (Florida):
  • Race 4: A 24-to-1 shot won by more than 5 lengths. The $1 double returned $886.10. I am guessing that is among the 10 largest double payouts this year. Winning trainers were Mark Passley and Walter Woodard who send out few horses and entered with a combined 10 wins in 2020 and 34 total in their careers.
  • Race 3: The winner galloped going away as a 36-to-1 shot.
  • Race 1: Scott Acker, a New Yorker who once assisted Gary Contessa, won for the third time in his career. His first training win came last December. He entered today's racing 1-for-36 in 2020.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Tyler Gaffalione won consecutive races early in the day. He added a third win later. He is the early meet's leader with four wins.
Remington Park (Oklahoma):
  • Canceled: A power outage in the area is the cause for the tonight's card cancellation.

The Breeders' Cup has humbled some of the all-time greats. Among those: Todd Pletcher is under 8%, John Sadler is 1-for-50, Kenny McPeek (Swiss Skydiver) is 0-for-31 and Christophe Clement is 0-for-38.

Just a little caution toward the the BC Juvy as it is a Kentucky Derby prep and the winner will get some early buzz. Only two horses won this race that went onto victory the following year in the Derby: Street Sense in 2006/07 and Nyquist in 2015/16. This year is the 37th installment of the Breeders' Cup.

  • Todd Pletcher is three wins shy of 5,000 after a win with his only starter today. He enters four horses tomorrow (Friday).
  • Joel Rosario is 8 eight wins away from riding 3,000 winners. Rosario could -- should in my book -- be a finalist for the Eclipse Award as Jockey of the year. He won't win but he could be a top three (number nominated) in many eyes.
  • Mark Casse is 10 wins shy of 3,000.
  • Robby Albarado has just that one win with his past 39 mounts and that may be the ride of the year in the Preakness Stakes.
Belmont (New York):
  • Luis Cardenas, a 7-pound bug from Peru, won two of the first three races.
  • Race 6: Tenderfoot (Eric Cancel/Charlie Baker) won by more than 10 lengths. Cancel has had a good meet.

  • Handle: Slightly under $6 million.
Gulfstream Park West (Florida):
  • Bombs away: It was one of those days at the 50-year-old oval. In what is likely its final year of operation as a T-bred facility, the shuttered Calder played wildly today with jockey Mario Fuentes front and center. The 7-pound bug from Chile won at 16-to-1 and 56-to-1 and elevated a $.50 Pick 5 to over $88,000. He won his first race earlier this year and eventually his 10-pound status was reduced to seven.
  • Race 5: Follow Me Mom (Mario Fuentes/Michael Mullings) won as the largest odds at 56-to-1 and paid $115.20. The $.50 Pick 5 paid $88,360,80. The trainer (also owner) won for the second time in his career and first since 2007. He doesn't sent out too may horses.

Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Corey Lanerie made a statement today not to forget his skills inside the Commonwealth of Kentucky with a 4-win day on six mounts. He now leads the meet with five victories.
  • Gerardo Corrales won twice today. His 2019 and 2020 seasons have been exceptional. He showed improvement each of his first four years, riding in Ohio and south Florida mostly, but nothing statistically to show his success the past two years a bulk of which has been at Kentucky tracks.
  • Race 7: Train to Artemus (Gerardo Corrales/Wesley Ward) won an $85,000 Maiden Special Weight by more than seven lengths. The 2-year-old filly owned by Kenneth and Sarah Ramsey through a private sale was out for the second time. Ward may have another 2-year-old dream on his hands. Ward is 4 3-0-1 this meet.

Illinois' recent passage on sports betting and how it relates to horse racing has been the subject of much discussion within the industry.

Churchill Downs owns historic Arlington Racecourse but also what is a riverboat casino in northern Illinois. CD balked at the recent measure to open a casino/sports betting facility at the track as indications and negotiations between various parties resulted in the desire of track management to focus on its riverboat operation leading to the speculation that horse racing at the track was secondary. CD to this day has yet to apply for a casino or sports betting license for Arlington which has not sat well with many in the industry. Different versions and accounts from both sides have been discussed in detail.

Hawthorne, much smaller but known as the longest running family-owned race track for about 110 years, has opened its sports book, though in a temporary facility, a few days ago. That has the attention of horsemen in the state with the desire of larger purses. Casino approval is awaiting with the hope to open by the end of 2021.

Today, the Illinois Gaming Board gave Fairmont Park in downstate (near St. Louis, Missouri) to open a sports betting book and possibly a casino the latter which is awaiting approval which could come by the end of 2021..
