Finger Lakes (New York):
  • Tammi Piermarini, who made much of her success at the shuttered Suffolk Downs (Mass.), won for the 2,534th time (corrected total). She is unofficially the third winningest female jockey in North America history behind only Julie Krone (3,704) and Rosemary Homeister, Jr. (2,784).
Thursday, September 24, 2020

Belmont (New York):
  • Joel Rosario had a big day with three winners. He rode the entire card and finished 10 3-1-1. Rosario was winless at the meet prior to today. He is 25 wins away from 3,000.
  • Todd Pletcher is 21 wins away from 5,000. Only seven trainers have reached that mark.
  • Handle: $7.6 million.
Pimlico (Maryland):
  • Opening day: Today began the annual meet which ends October 3. The track usually conducts its meet in June but had dates altered due to the C-virus. The Black-Eyed Susan and Preakness will be run on the meet's final day. The track will run six live dates: Sept. 24-26 and Oct. 1-3.

Belterra (Ohio):
  • Perry Ouzts added a win to his career total which now stands at 7.132. That total is nine away from tying Chris McCarron and sixth place all-time..
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Closing day: September 27.
  • Jockeys' standings: Tyler Gaffalione has a 5-win lead with 15 victories over his closest challengers Florent Gerous and Ricardo Santana, Jr.
  • Trainers' standings: Steve Asmussen (9), Brad Cox (7) and Michael Maker (6) make up the top three.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Closing day: The meet concludes Sept. 27.
  • Jockeys: Edgard Zayas has 135 wins and is in good shape to win the riders' championship.
  • Trainers: Saffie Joseph will win the trainers' title with ease. He currently has 58 wins.
  • Gulfstream Park West: The meet goes from October 3 through November 28. It is the final meet of the contract between the Stronach Group and Churchill Downs and this is expected to be the final year of operation as a race track for the former Calder.
  • Return to Gulfstream: The next meet will operate December 2, 2020 until March 28, 2021.
  • Looking ahead to the GPW meet: The course at the former Calder is very different than what GP offers. It takes a jockey familiar with the landscape and who has had success on the course to offer reliability. Emisael Jaramillo and Edgard Zayas are two to use. Also, when Monmouth concludes it meet, Paco Lopez likely will head south and if so should be considered as much as any rider.

AMERICAN PHAROAH STAKES
What: Grade I. An important race for 2-year-olds to perhaps begin to separate themselves from the pack. Only Weston is a graded stakes winner. Spielberg cost $1,000,000 but has finished twice in two starts and in each occasion Dr. Schivel (not entered) was the victor. Rider switch from Abel Cedillo to Luis Saez should be noted. Breaking one's maiden in a Grade I is not a common occurrence but could happen here.
Where: Santa Anita Park, Arcadia, CA
When: Saturday, September 26, 2020, Race 8

Time: 4:12 pm PT (7:12 pm ET)
Who: 2-year-olds
Distance: 1 1/16 miles
Surface: Dirt
Purse: $300,000
TV: TVG (all-day coverage of racing).
History: Inaugurate din 1970. Renamed in 2018. Bob Baffert has won this race a record nine times. Among the winners besides American Pharoah were Nyquist, Eight Rings, Game Winner, Lookin at Lucky, Free House, Best Pal, Snow Chief and others.

Program numbers and post positions vary. Odds are listed. This is the 4th race on a card of seven.

Led Zeppelin: Remembering John Bonham on the 40th anniversary of his passing.

Belmont (New York):
  • Jose Ortiz won three times. He has five wins in two days since returning from his suspension.
  • Nick Zito won with his only starter. That is the Hall of Famer and native New Yorker's first win at Belmont since May 24, 2019.
  • Dylan Davis won consecutive races which paid $144. He leads the meet with 7 victories!
  • Charlie Marquez won his second race of the day and from my memory first all-time in New York. His book was picked up by Angel Cordero after the agent departed ways with Hall of Famer John Velazquez. The 17-year-old Marquez was riding in Laurel and is a candidate for Apprentice (bug) of the Year.
  • Javier Castellano and Junior Alvarado return from their suspensions tomorrow (Saturday).
  • Irad Ortiz. Jr. is in the midst of a 10-day suspension.
  • Handle: $9 million+.
Pimlico (Maryland):
  • Card: Day two of six racing days.
  • Race 9: A dead-heat for win.
  • Steve Asmussen had a rare starter at the oval but won. It was his 16th lifetime win at the track. He is one of two trainers with 9,000+ career wins. He is 435 wins away from first place.
  • Sweetie-pies: Jockeys Trevor McCarthy (3 wins) and fiancee Katie Davis (2 wins) combined for five victories.
  • Handle: $2.6 million.
  • PREAKNESS UPDATE: Steve Asmussen will enter three horses:
    • Max Player (Paco Lopez)
    • Excession (Sheldon Russell)
    • Pneumatic (Joe Bravo)
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Race 9: The $.20 Pick 6 returned $39,000 to all winners.
  • Race 8: Tatweej (Edgard Zayas/Todd Pletcher) won for the third straight time in four starts. Tatweej is the horse that I mentioned two years ago after being purchased for $2.5 million and how I was instantly enamored. After a delayed start, the abilities I hoped have been developing. A Tapit four-year-old colt is heating up. The train has left the station and the destination is unknown.

Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Steve Asmussen added a win to his track-record career lead.
  • Tyler Gaffalione added two wins to his meet lead. He is all but assured the riders' title at another Kentucky meet which ends this weekend.
Arlington (Illinois):
  • Race 1: Mojo Man (Julio Felix/James DiVito) won for the 7th time in 22 starts but is 3-for-4 here. The 5-year-old gelding is also 4-for-6 in 2020. A late developer who has taken a liking to the track. For handicappers, a 1-to-5 shot ran off the board.
  • Race 3: The $1 exacta returned $736. The $.50 tri paid over $2,100.
  • Hot trainers: Larry Rivelli, Christopher Davis and Brittany Vanden Berg have put up sizzling numbers for the meet. The latter is a former jockey who took out her trainer's license last year. Though Rivelli is pummeling the competition in the wins category, three three have comparable winning percentages and in-the-money figures.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Opening day: The delayed opening day was today. The meet continues into October 25.
  • Race 7: Big Runnuer odd but correct spelling (Juan Hernandez/Victor Garcia) won the Grade 2 $200,000 Eddie D. Stakes.
  • Race 6: Into Chocolate (Umberto Rispoli/Cliff Sise) won the Grade 3 $100,000 Chillingworth Stakes.

  • Race 1: Umberto Rispoli rode the first winner of the meet.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Race 2: My Ladies' Man (Jeffrey Alderson/Saul McHugh) shocked the masses at 84-to-1 and paid $173.50/$54.80/$29.80. The $1 exacta was $428.80. The $.20 tri was $539. The trainer won for the first time this year and 6th time in his career (126th starts).
  • Justin Stein (85 wins) and Rafael Hernandez (84 wins) continue to duke it out for riding supremacy at the meet.
Newmarket (England):
  • Isabella Giles won the Shadewell Rockfel Stakes and will be invited to the Juvenile Fillies Turf Breeders' Cup race.

  • Chad Brown had four winners spanning six races across three tracks.
  • Steve Asmussen now has 9,015... and counting .... wins in his career.
  • Perry Ouzts has 7,133 wins which is eight shy of Chris McCarron and sixth place in North America riding history.
Belmont (New York):
  • Jose Lezcano rode three winners and now leads the meet with nine victories.
  • Race 4: American West (Jose Ortiz/Chad Brown) won the maiden special weight. The 2-year-old filly was purchased at last year's Keeneland sale for $925,000 by Peter Brant.
  • Race 8: Viadera (Joel Rosario/Chad Brown) won the Grade 3 $100,000 Noble Damsel. Brown finished 1-2-4 in the race.
  • Race 9: Firenze Fire (Jose Lezcano/Kelly Breen) won the Grade 2 $100,000 Vosburgh Stakes and with it received an invitation to the Breeders' Cup Sprint. The Florida-bred put the hammer down, took names and won for the 12th time in 29 starts. The 5-year-old has earned over $2 million.

Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Closing weekend: Today is the penultimate day of racing at the meet. Onto Meadowlands at Monmouth beginning October 3.
  • Race 5: She's Got You (Joe Bravo/Chad Brown) won the $100,000 Violet.
  • Race 13: Andrez Conquist (Tomas Mejia/Melvin Ovando) rocks the simulcast feeds nationwide and into the deep international waters with the MOAB in North America this year. I do not recall the last 158-to-1 shot to win a race but it happened here which was the largest win payout in Monmouth history....some are saying the largest in state history. The winner paid $319.80/$89.60/$27.40. The $1 exacta paid $723.70. The Florida-bred -- leave it to a Florida bred -- failed to hit the board in seven starts.

“I don’t know what to say. Wow,” said the jockey Tomas Mejia who picked up the mount earlier in the day.

  • Race 14: The $1 double paid $899.50.
  • Chris DeCarlo had a rare 2-win day. The perennial personal favorite rides infrequently at this stage of his life and career.
  • Jockey standings: Paco Lopez (50 wins), Ferrin Peterson (41 wins) and Joe Bravo (40 wins). Bravo's numbers are 30% winning and 65% in the money. Jersey Joe excels at his hometown track.
  • Handle: Just under $4 million.
Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Card: Six races with purses $75,000 or more.
  • Handle: Over $1.3 million.
  • Race 8: Whereshetoldmetogo (Alex Cintron/Brittany Russell) was DQ'd from victory in favor of Threes Over Deuces (Victor Rosales/Gary Capuano) in the $100,000 New Castle Stakes.
  • Jamie Ness trained three winners. At one point, he hit the board with 10 straight spanning multiple days (10 5-1-4).
  • Summary: Carol Cedeno (62 wins, in the lead by 11) and Jamie Ness (47 wins, in the lead by 26) are the top jockey and trainer, respectively, at the meet in victories. The meet ends October 17.
Pimlico (Maryland):
  • Meet: Three days in the book, three remain for the entire 2020 slate. The meet concludes with racing dates on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The $1.5 million Preakness will be drawn Monday.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Race 8: Princess Secret (Miguel Vasquez/Daniel Pita) won the $400,000 Florida Sire Stakes for 2-year-old fillies.
  • Race 10: Boca Boy (Edgard Zayas/Cheryl Winebaugh) won the $400,000 Florida Sire Stakes for 2-year-old males. A 1-to-5 shot placed.
  • Rainbow Six: Over $1,000,000 in the post today.
  • Closing day: Tomorrow is the swansong for the meet. Onto Gulfstream Park West for a meet from 10/3/20 - 11/28/20 before a return to Gulfstream Park for 12/2/20 - 3/28/21.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Tyler Gaffalione was 7 3-1-1. He solidified his meet championship. The humble kid from south Florida is owning Kentucky. The kid is only going to improve!
  • Race 9: Mr. Money (Gabriel Saez/Bret Calhoun) won the Grade 3 $100,000 Ack Ack at 12-to-1. The 4-year-old colt is 6-for-17 lifetime but 4-for-6 at CD. A horse for the course! Saez who had three wins today and is no relation to the Saez racing family had one of the most celebratory reaction of the day; thoroughly excited! Cool scene.
Arlington (Illinois):
  • Jareth Loveberry continued his wonderful meet with a 7 4-2-0 afternoon.
  • Larry Rivelli, who won three times with Jareth Loveberry riding, was a tremendous 5 4-0-0.
  • Closing day: Today closed the meet. The track's future is amid much speculation as racing could be discontinued as early as 2021.
Louisiana Downs (Louisiana):
  • Day time: A rare early start to the racing day.
  • Closing day: Today was closing day of the meet.
  • Joel Dominguez dominated the meet with 71 riding victories.
  • Steve Asmussen (41 wins) beat out all challengers led by Karl Broberg (38 wins). The two could finish 1-2 in North America when the year is concluded.
Santa Anita (California):
  • See below (part 2 of post)
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Card: Five races with purses $100,000+.
  • Handle: Over $5 million bet.
  • Patrick Husbands rode winners with his first four mounts.
  • Race 3: Painting (Patrick Husbands/Josie Carroll) won the Grade 3 $125,000 Ontario Fashion Stakes.
  • Mark Casse trained three winners.

Santa Anita (California):
  • Breeders' Cup: Five "Win and You're In" Breeders' Cup races.
  • Card: Six races with purses $100,000+ including five at $200,000 or more.
  • Handle: Over $12.4 million.
  • Race 3: Princess Noor (Victor Espinoza/Bob Baffert) improved to 3 3-0-0 after winning the $200,000 Grade 2 Chandelier Stakes for 2-year-old filles and received an invitation to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. She could be the head of this divison right now. She was a $1.35 million dollar purchase earlier this year at the Ocala (FL) sale of 2-year-olds in training. She is owned by Saudi businessman Amr Zedan. In a field of five, Baffert finished 1-2-3 and extended his record of winning this race to a total of 12.
  • Race 5: Amanzi Yimpilo (Luis Saez/Wesley Ward) won the $100,000 Speakeasy. How many more times does it need to be said? Wesley Ward and 2-year-olds! Ward is a master craftsman. He is 27% this year with 2-year-olds. The Irish-bred filly received an invitation to Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint.

  • Race 7: Mucho Unusual (Juan Hernandez/Tim Yakteen), the only California-bred in the race, was solid in winning the $300,000 Grade I Rodeo Drive. She received an invitation to the Breeders' Cup Maker's Mark Filly & Mare Turf. The 4-year-old filly was sired by Mucho Macho Man who won a Breeders' Cup Classic and earned over $5.6 million in his career.
  • Race 8: Get Her Number (Flavien Prat/Peter Miller) won the Grade I $300,000 American Pharoah and with it received an invitation to the Breeders' Cup TVG Juvenile presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance.

  • Race 9: United (Flavien Prat/Richard Mandella) won the Grade 2 $200,000 John Henry Turf Championship. The 5-year-old gelding has had a splendid 2020 winning four times in five starts.
  • Race 10: Improbable (Drayden Van Dyke/Bob Baffert) romped in the Grade I $300,000 Awesome Again Stakes and with it received an invitation to the biggest race of them of all the Breeders' Cup Longines Classic. He is now on a 3-race win streak and is 14 7-3-0 lifetime. Among those defeated was Maximum Security (Luis Saez/Bob Baffert) who fell to 13 10-2-0 lifetime with over $12.2 million in earnings. Saez returned to the mount after two straight wins by Abel Cedillo.

  • Bob Baffert won two of the three races he entered and finished 6 2-2-1. He had quite the payday.
  • Juan Hernandez, who moved his tack from northern Cal to southern Cal a few months ago, had a big day with three wins.

The largest $2 win bet was $1,885.50 in 1917 at Latonia (which closed in 1939) in northern Kentucky when Wishing Ring was sent off at 941-to-1. The place pay out was $644.50 which also is a record.

Canadian Derby from Edmonton has a post time of 11:55 pm ET.

Oklahoma Derby from Remington has a post time of 8:12 pm ET.

  • Steve Asmussen now has 9,020 wins in his career, 425 behind Dale Baird and first place.
  • Todd Pletcher is 18 wins away from 5,000.
Belmont (New York):
  • Handle: More than $9.5 million bet.
  • Race 10: The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $48,000. Things like that happen when a Randi Persaud-trained horse wins. Persaud had not hit the board since March 15 -- a streak of 70 (by my count) starters that failed to be in the money. The last time one of his horses won was February 14, 2020 unofficially 97 starters ago.
  • Jose Lezcano leads the meet with 11 wins. IIRC, he had the most wins at the NYRA tracks in 2019 since many leave for Florida for extended stays and sometimes elsewhere for briefer visits.
  • Todd Pletcher won twice and at last check is 18 wins away from 5,000.
Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Closing day: Next up the Meadowlands at Monmouth will run for nine days from Oct. 3 through Oct. 24. The first four days are Oct. 3, 4, 7 and 10.
  • Paco Lopez win the riders' title for the seventh time, this year with 51 wins. Ferrin Peterson had a wonderful meet and was runner up with 42 victories. Joe Bravo, who holds the track record for most titles with 13, finished third with 41 wins,
  • Kelly Breen won the trainers' title for the first time since 2006. He had three wins today with five starters.
  • Handle: More than $3 million.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Rainbow Six: The winners each collected over $218,000. I believe the jackpot exceeded $4 million. As mentioned earlier today $3 million was an estimate.
  • Race 12: Whycantthisbelove (Mario Fuentes/Angel Rodriguez) won the finale which led to other large returns besides the extraordinary payout in the Pick 6. The $1 exacta paid $858.00 with 32-to-1 and 23-to-1 shots. The $.50 tri paid over $1,500. Van Halen (horse's name) fans should Jump.
  • Alberto Burgos won with his first three mounts and ended with a 4-win day which I will assume is a career-best day. He rides as a 5-pound bug.
  • Closing day: Onto Gulfstream Park West for a meet from 10/3/20 - 11/28/20 before a return to Gulfstream Park for 12/2/20 - 3/28/21.
  • Edgard Zayas won the riders' title.
  • Saffie Joseph won the trainers' title.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Closing day: Keeneland runs Oct. 2-24 then a return to Churchill Downs beginning Oct. 25 and then back to Keeneland for the Breeders' Cup for the Nov. 6-7 weekend.
  • Tyler Gaffalione won the riders' title.
  • Steve Asmussen won the trainers' title. He is the winningest trainer in the history of the track.
  • Joe Talamo-Dale Romans combined to win twice. Romans is winning at a better than 23% rate with 2-year-old females (14% with males).
  • Mitchell Murrill-Chris Hartman combined to win twice.
  • Florent Geroux rode two winners.
  • Race 10: The clamining price was $150,000.
Remington (Oklahoma):
  • Race 3: Envoutante (David Cabrera/Kenny McPeek) won the Grade 3 $100,000 Remington Oaks. The 3-year-old filly was out for the 8th time this year and was unraced as a 2-year-old, the only horse in the race who debuted in 2020. McPeek entered three in the fired of eight and defeated among others Steve Asmussen and Simon Callaghan.
  • Race 10: Shared Sense (Richard Eramia/Brad Cox) won the Grade 3 $200,000 Oklahoma Derby. The 3-year-old colt won for the 4th time in 10 starts. He is owned by the Maktoum family's private conglomerate Godolphin Stables.
  • Handle: $1.7 million.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Race 4: Harvest Moon (Flavien Prat/Simon Callaghan) won the Grade 2 $200,000 Zenyatta Stakes to improve to 3-for-4 lifetime and the 3-year-old filly received an invitation to the Breeders' Cup Longines Distaff.

  • Race 8: C Z Rocket (Luis Saez/Peter Miller) won the Grade 2 $200,000 Santa Anita Sprint Championship and with it received an invitation to the Breeders' Cup Turf. The 6-year-old Florida-bred gelding is now 9-for-22 lifetime.

  • Race 10: Cupid's Claws (Flavien Prat/Craig Dollase) was sent off at 7-to-1 yet won the Grade 3 $100,000 Tokyo City Cup.
  • Flavien Prat had seven victories the first three days of the meet to lead all riders.
  • Bob Baffert and Peter Miller each had four victories to lead all trainers through three days of the meet.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Handle: $5.2 million.
Century Mile (Alberta):
  • Race 10: Real Grace (Mauricio Malvaez/Shelley Brown) won the 91st Canadian Derby at 18-to-1. The 3-year-old gelding won for the second time in eight starts. The winning trainer, based at Assiniboia in Winnipeg, was diagnosed with cancer less than a month ago.
Hipódromo da Gávea (Brazil):
  • Race 6: Pimper's Paradise was sent off the favorite, improved to 6 wins in 11 starts by winning the Grande Premio Brasil and with it received an invitation to the Breeders' Cup Longines Turf.

The Preakness field was drawn today. Pimlico has an exceptional card on Saturday but due to commitments and the irregularities of 2020, big name jocks seem minimal.

Johnny V will ride Authentic. Joe Bravo and Paco Lopez will ride but mostly Maryland-baded jocks. Cool for them. Robbie Albarado will replace Tyler Gaffalione on the lone fully entered Swiss Skydiver again due to the previously stated.

More later.

Just listened to another great call by Finger Lakes track announcer Tony Calo. He is exceptional in reading the race and catching moves by late runners. He tells an exceptional and often humorous tale of a race. Here's an example I found on youtube:
