Hutton had a good year in LA, but for most of his career he has been highly unimpressive defenceman. I guess giving him a one year deal wouldn't hurt, but since they have drafted a horde of left handed defencemen in the past five years, it's about time to see what they have.

Sounds like Marchand may not miss any time. If it were me....

Marchand - Bergeron - Smith
DeBrusk - Krejci - Kase
Bjork - Coyle - Studnicka

That would be my top 9. Smith is a veteran guy, knows where to be and gets in the dirty area. Not opposed to Stud's 1RW and Smith 3LW w/ Coyle if your looking for more balance.

Yeah the initial expected timeframe for Marchand was a mid-Jan return, so hopefully he only misses a couple of games at most. In which case I agree that Smith is a good choice for the top line for the reasons you cited. Eventually I think he and Coyle will make a good pair, but that can wait a bit.

I think two players will improve the team in the goal scoring department. Added scoring from Craig Smith and Jack Studnicka. Smith is a proven player who nets around 20 goals a season and I think many underestimate what Studnicka
could bring to the Bruins offense. On a side note I expect a very motivated Jack DeBrusk and hope for some close to 30 goals from him.
I also hope that Ondrej Kase can regain his scoring touch and that his Anaheim sidekick Nick Ritchie shows up in camp with a great attitude and work ethic, plus that he trained hard after the bubble playoffs so he's in the best shape of his life. Otherwise he's in danger not only of losing his Bruins left wing spot but also jeopardizing his career.

This year it's up to the Providence Brigade to show they belong and can contribute to the Bruins. I expect Trent Frederic and Jakub Zboril to make the team along with Studnicka and give Zach Senyshyn a real chance. I've said this before and I repeat. Those guys won't hurt the Bruins on ice. They are to well structured. But I'm asking them contribute productively on regular basis. Good look to the Bruins to have a helluva year and to all the Bruins fans also.

I wouldn’t argue with the numbering of any of these guys per se, but I would say that most of them are probably average or below league average for their numbering. Maybe not McAvoy, but the others are overall weak. And to go along with the lack of a #2, I’d contend that’s a weak defense.

Last I checked we lost to TB last playoffs due in large part to our defense getting worked by their forwards. So to counter that, we remove Krug, which may actually help to some extent, but then we do nothing else? You need to improve significantly to match potent offenses and the plan is to just promote young dmen with limited ceilings?

Again, it’s a weak effort by the GM. Just like doing nothing to solve the JDB-Krejci issue.

I don't know that I'd consider Carlo an average #3. I think he's a very good top4 defenseman. IMO there are only 4 or 5 teams in the league where he wouldn't be in their top3, and he'd be in the top4 on all but 1 or 2 of them. Unfortunately Tampa is 1 of those 2 teams.

I agree that the lack of a #2 makes this defense weak overall. That's a pretty critical piece. Can Gryz grow into that role and be a Ryan Ellis type of #2? Even if he does, he'll probably still be considered a "weak #2" because of his lack of size. Just like with Krug, he'll be fine (really good even) during the regular season but in the playoffs when teams target him with heavy matchups.

I also think that's a fair take on the GM. He certainly didn't do anything to address their playoff weaknesses. Weaknesses they clearly know about because they talked about them openly in the off-season.

See I would trade 10 years of competitive for another Cup in 2013 or 2019. Would rather go all in then be competitive year after year. The Sinden Bruins were competitive from 1974 to 1996 but never won a thing that mattered.
Exactly this, who cares we won a round in the playoffs for x amount of consecutive years, either go all in for a serious run or rebuild.

Poor drafting has hurt this team. In a league where most “stars” are being paid 8m+ per year, Sweeney has Marchand Bergeron Pastrnak McAvoy locked in at under 6.5m each. They just have nothing coming through the pipeline to take advantage of this era with those fantastic deals Sweeney signed his stars to.

I won’t mention 2015 but man that was brutal and the team is now feeling the effects of that disaster.

2015 produced, at the moment, a top 6 LW, a top 4 RHD, a 3rd pairing LHD (with top 4 upside) and a wildcard 7th-2nd pairing Dman. Not bad for a disaster.

I will say the drafting of long term prospects hasn’t helped at all, neither has trading 1sts. They have long term prospects as their top end guys; Beecher, Vaakanainen. And wildcards like Lohrei and Kuntar who have good potential but also have are long term.

As a bruin fan I really can't complain. The team has been extremely competitive for some time now.

We continue our analysis of the NHL's best from the 2010s by looking back at the 25 best teams. We tend to give extra credit to Stanley Cup champions, but great regular-season performances that fall a little short deserve respect as well, because it is not easy to be the best team (or one of the best teams) over an entire 82-game season. See which teams make the list.

The 25 best NHL teams from the 2010s

We can always complain ;)

The Bruins have had some real good teams but a move here or there and a bounce here or there and they could of had another Cup and in the end that's what spells greatness.

Unfortunately with so many teams rolling into the playoffs now a days and it wouldn't surprise me seeing that increased do to the economical state the league will be in. That just making the playoffs or winning the president trophy is nice but that's about it. With the season being so long as well as the playoffs, I feel more teams are more in tuned in just surviving the regular season and staying healthy for a long playoff run.

Yes poor drafting forwards but pretty darn good defence drafting.

See I would trade 10 years of competitive for another Cup in 2013 or 2019. Would rather go all in then be competitive year after year. The Sinden Bruins were competitive from 1974 to 1996 but never won a thing that mattered.

That outlook seems very odd to me.

I enjoy hockey (in general) and the Bruins (in particular) too much to give up 10 seasons of competitive hockey for one championship season. 10 years of being non-competitive is a very long time. I remember the 60's Bruins teams (8 years in a row out of the playoffs). Don't think I could handle that very well as an adult.

A certain Finn goalie making a save here or there and they could of had a few more cup too.

DeBrusk is a good young inconsistent 2nd/3rd line winger. Having 3 consecutive picks in the top 15 of the draft is unprecedented. I don’t care if they got lucky and nabbed Carlo in the 2nd round, that doesn’t cover up for the massive misfire in the 1st round. This team could be a wagon right now with a better game plan.

Started out as a pest. He’s a skilled player now. Some say Elite , some might disagree depending on what side the spoon is stirring.

I say this all the time..
Marchand is very quietly the best ALL around player in the NHL as of last year.

Bruins went to G7 of the SCF two years ago and were the President Trophy winners last season. How are they feeling the effects of that " disaster "?

They could been much better with intelligent drafting and not so many ill-advised contracts. They also would not be looking for a 2nd. line rw for an extended period.

Not to mention the prospect pool could have been much improved.
