I guess that would depend on what happens at the draft. If you think you’ve drafted a 1C then I’m not sure adding Hayes makes sense.

Think the infatuation you have with putting that size together would be your downfall. Ras is a great net front dirty areas guy, would complement Hughes and Zadina. Mantha has a fantastic shot as a power forward, complements Bert and Larkin, as we saw against Chicago. AA is great for his versatility, but he seems like a matchup noghtmare if you can drop him lines and get lesser quality opposing lines. Pairing him with Svechnikov and Hayes would be a better fit.

As far as next year goes it would be:

Rasmussen-Hughes-Zadina
Athanasiou-Hayes-Svechnikov

That being said, I’m not going to spend money on a 3rd line center at this stage, no matter how quality he may be. Especially with the Nielsen contract on the books

Detroit doesn't need to spend 5-6 million on a winger. Either go for the highest end winger on the market, or stand pat with a pretty deep core of wings already on the team.

I think we should go after everybody. Go after Karlsson, if we miss him, then after Gardiner. Go after Panarin/Stone/Duchene, if we miss those, then after Hayes, Nyquist etc. Just use the cap full and acquire maximum possible assets and overcrowded roster.

Then make a trade from that surplus, quantity for quality.

Bring kids in.

Repeat.

Would be interesting, if Holland would make the offer-sheet for Point, take all the hate of the case (from Tampa) and then retire on the rafters.

Yzerman would get his center to solidify our core to very "Selkeish" duo of Larkin and Point as 1-2 centers.

Its too early to try to divine what's needed on forward before the draft. Getting Hughes would make the center situation in Detroit much clearer. If Detroit falls far enough in the draft it could mean that going hard after a youngish center makes sense.
