Stark: Move back the mound? MLB and players' union are open...

Sixty feet, six inches. It may well be the most iconic distance in sports. For more than a century, that has been the distance between home plate and the pitcher’s rubber on every baseball field in the world. But that could soon be changing, sources tell The Athletic.

Among the proposals being discussed by Major League Baseball and the players’ union this winter is the formation of a joint committee to study whether to move back the mound to help hitters, at a time when pitchers’ velocity has reached levels never before seen in history.

The committee, if agreed to by both sides, would also look at the potential impact of lowering the mound by as many as six inches. In addition, it would examine the possibility of changing the size of the strike zone, two years after MLB proposed raising the bottom of the zone to the top of the knees. That proposal was never enacted.

The committee would issue a report by the end of 2019, sources said. MLB and the union then would use the results of that report to determine whether to implement any or all of the recommended changes for the 2020 season.

The Phils are going to be fun to watch. If they do land Harper in the end, they could do some serious damage.

The whole NL East outside of the Marlins should be good next year. The Mets and Phils bought big this offseason, and the Braves are returning the core of a young division-winner last year.

Phillies could come out of the next few weeks with Realmuto, Harper/Machado, Kimbrell and Keuchel.

Putting the DH in the NL may kill me. I get it, but it's just something I don't really want to see.

The biggest reason the NL hasn't switched is 15 owners like the face the 25th man on the team makes 500K - with a DH it gets more expensive.

MLB could have tried a little twist on the DH - in interleague games the VISITING team dictates if a DH is used.

Lenny Dykstra’s neighbors on quiet N.J. street live in fear of ex-Phillies, Mets star’s illegal rooming house

The neighbors of former Mets and Phillies star and World Series great Lenny Dykstra say they have been living in fear on their quiet, tree-lined New Jersey street.

For nearly a year, residents of Stockton Circle in Linden have been complaining Dykstra has been ruining the neighborhood with piles of garbage, fights and people coming and going at all hours from this two-story home turned rooming house.
They want him out and have appealed to the town for help.

“It all started when he moved in,” said Linda Graham, who lives nearby. “There’s been two overdoses. There’s been a scuffle on the front lawn. There’s been people who are here today, gone tomorrow. We don’t know who these people are and we are afraid.”

Linden City Councilwoman Gretchen Hickey accuses Dykstra of illegally renting out rooms in his house for $1,000 each – a violation of municipal ordinances.

“He’s advertised for boarders,” Hickey said. “There’s been 10 people living there at a time. He even made the garage into a room.”

Source: MLB's disabled list renamed 'injured list'

The disabled list is going on the permanent DL.

Major League Baseball will rename the disabled list as the "injured list," a source familiar with the plan told ESPN.
The league will make the change out of concern that the term "disabled" for injured players falsely conflates disabilities with injuries and an inability to participate in sports.

The rules of the DL -- which has gone through different incarnations since its institution in 1966 and today includes a 10-day version for short-term injuries and a 60-day version for more severe ailments -- will remain the same, the source said.

it would most diffidently pro-long players careers which is a good thing but it will also make it harder on the pitchers as well. I like the idea more bang for your buck.

I am with Mike Francesa and what he said today that the pitcher should only be allowed to throw to first base two times to keep the runner in check

Not sure if me getting hit over the head with a brick this morning has anything to do with it.

That’s way more reasonable than changing an entire strategy in a sport just to save some commercial time

The only reason they didn't adopt it in the first place was because the Phillies' owner was on a fishing trip when the NL was voting on it. The Phillies' GM was prepared to vote for it, but after an amendment to the rule came up in the meeting, he tried to call the owner to verify the yes vote. Meanwhile the Pirates' owner gave his GM strict orders to vote the same way the Phillies did. Being unable to reach the owner, the Phillies' GM abstained, the Pirates' GM followed suit, and the motion failed by one vote.

John Claiborne was fired a week after that vote by St Louis and would later come to Boston and saved NESN from bankruptcy.

The National and American League ceased to exist as separate entities in 2000 and the universal DH should have happened then - but it didn't.

At the risk of sounding insensitive....

THIS IS RIDICULOUS.

Literally no one ever equated the DL with disabled people not being able to freaking play sports. NO ONE.

Tired of everyone feeling the need to "white knight" every issue.

would you rather the IR and LTIR disappear from hockey lexicon?

The game went 4 innings longer than the second longest WS game (Chicago/Houston game 3, 2005), and that one started at 8:30 PM and went nearly 6 hours. Proportionally, the Sox/Dodgers game was quicker inning for inning (mostly thanks to Eovaldi's pace).
Baseball like all other sports must adapt its rules to a changing world.

Extra innings is outdated. Come up with s better way. Football and hockey changed overtime rules. I’ll give you the playoffs is a different animal, but regular season, get rid of it.

I like all the proposals. I don’t like changing the mound. It’s like making the nets bigger in hockey. That goes against shortening the game time as more run scored means more game time. Batters must adapt.
