There's speculation that Sautner might be recalled due to Fantenburg's illness, and Cull says that Bancks is probably out tomorrow due to injury. Sautner has been playing the right side so guessing Blujus might be his replacement; Hamilton seems likely to draw into Bancks' spot.

Update edit: Sautner's recall confirmed.

Ben Birnell reported that D-pairings at practice were

Brisebois/Rafferty
Juolevi/Chatfield
Teves/Blujus
LeBlanc/Eliot

yikes if they really do bring back the 48/5 pairing

Comets to open their home season with a 4-game home stand starting tonight. They will play 3 of them in the next 4 days starting with Syracuse tonight, defending Calder Cup Champs Charlotte on Friday, and Rochester on Saturday. We'll get a better idea of what we might expect from this team in the next 3 games. Word and actual viewing of Binghamton and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton is that they are not very good. Syracuse, an annual contender, has racked up 5 points in their first 3 GP, Charlotte is 2-2, and the Amerks are 3-1.

It's interesting how the Canucks didn't sign Ferraro or Schenn because, we were told, they didn't want to waste a contract slot that might be needed later, especially when the NCAA seasons end. Then they traded Biega and surrendered that contract slot to an ECHL forward in return. Meanwhile Syracuse became the beneficiary of smart Tampa Bay franchise building. The Crunch will greet the Comets with a stalwart defender for the few games he played with the Comets near the end of last season before the Canucks called him up, Luke Schenn.

Schenn is joined by a 2nd vet
Cameron Gaunce
That's 2 veteran D-men to play with their younger guys, 4 of whom are TB draft selections.

2017 1st round Cal Foote - 2nd year Crunch
2016 6th round Oleg Sosunov - 2nd year Crunch
2014 2nd round Dominick Masin - 4th year Crunch
2014 4th round Ben Thomas - 4th yr Crunch

The roster is rounded out with
Nolan Valleau - undrafted 5th yr pro/non vet
Luc Snuggerud - 2014 5th rounder Chicago/3rd year pro with only 58 AHL GP.

Tampa Bay obviously values placing solid veteran defenders with their kids. Both were given Tampa Bay contracts.
I'm betting that both Schenn and Gaunce will be in the Crunch lineup with the 4 Tampa draftees.

Utica doesn't have a single veteran with 4 rookies, 3 2yr players, and their most experienced on a Vancouver contract is Sautner. Juolevi and Brisebois are the only 2 out of the 9 who are Vancouver draft picks. Blujus is actually the most experienced Comet, but he and LeBlanc are not signed to Vancouver and would explain why Blujus has been scratched. Neither has played yet. Would think Blujus signs in tonight with Sautner in Vancouver. He is the most experienced left.

6 years of drafting with 1 Canuck and only 2 Comets drafted by Jim. That really is pathetic. A bottom feeding NHL team with at least 7 selections = 35 picks. He's pissed away several in trades for basically nobody. Then there's the NCAA and Europe. If you don't have your own property it is essential to go out and fill out your roster with available talent. You also have to be aware of the Veteran rule. Every summer the used hoc key player lot is full of available players. It only requires an active AHL GM working in collusion with his boss GM to make the acquisitions.
The Comets goal had filled 2 keepers coming in under contract.
They acquired McIntyre and Kielly making 4. Check.

The D had 4 returning contract players. Brisebois, Chatfield, Sautner, Juolevi.
They signed 3 more undrafted rookies inn Rafferty, Teves, Eliot.
Johnson. re-signed LeBlanc and Blujus. Poor d-corps construction. NO veterans on defense inThe AHL is a recipe for disaster.

The forwards had 5 returning Vancouver contacted guys coming back of which none were centers: Boucher, MacEwen, Jasek, Lind, Gadjovich,. They went out and signed 2 centers in Camper and Graovac. They acquired 2 more wings in Perron and Bailey. They cut 2 more wings in Baertschi and Goldobin. Wings Check.

There were 2 AHL contracts returning in Bancks and Hamilton and Johnson re-signed Malone and Arseneau.

Centers 2 + Hamilton. short 3. Converted Jasek. That was an act of desperation. Bancks fills in for injured Graovac. Huge downgrade. The guy is a banger, crasher, energy line wing.

Tonight both Bancks and Graovac are out. Missing a center.
Graovac injured and Bancks. Center position no Check.

This isn't exactly true. The Canucks offered Schenn a contract following the season but before Tampa did, and Schenn is on record having chosen Tampa because he thought he had a better chance at competing for the cup there:

Luke Schenn opens up about choosing Lightning over Canucks

You're also failing to mention for some reason that the Canucks then immediately signed an equivalent depth/AHL defender in Fantenberg, who was equally successful at the AHL level and happens to be injured at the moment.

Game on. DiPietro gets his first AHL start in goal. Francis Perron makes his debut after getting injured in camp.

One minute in, nice play by Lind to set up Boucher who rings a shot off of the post.

No score about 7 minutes in. That dirty cheat Luke Schenn received a deserved penalty but Comets couldn't take advantage with the PP. Baertschi backchecking put a Crunch forward into the net, then gave him a little face wash for good measure. Hopefully that means that Sven will show more energy tonight than what he did on Saturday.

Nice moves by Camper draw a second Utica PP.

Unfortunately, a SHG results as DiPietro goes down a little early and Cory Conacher roofs it for a 1-0 Crunch lead.

Utica goal. Good work by Arseneau sends a loose puck to Hamilton whose shot is tipped in by Gadjovich.

Immediately after, a penalty to Blujus puts Comets on the PK for the first time. MacEwen with a good effort to set up Jasek for a great chance that was stopped. DiPietro with a save as the penalty expires. 1-1, about 4 minutes remaining in the 1st.

Interference against Lind sends Comets to PP for the third time already. But sloppy plays by Goldobin and Boucher cause problems, resulting in Juolevi taking an interference penalty early in the PP. Some fine play by Bailey gives him a great point-blank chance but he is robbed. Then Blujus sprawls to break up a 2-on-1 but the puck goes right to a Syracuse player who is stifled by the glove of DiPietro.

DiPietro then makes another fine save but the rebound goes to Chris Mueller who deposits it for a 2-1 Syracuse lead with 17 seconds to go.

But incredibly, Blujus moves in to pick up a loose puck in the slot and scores with 2 seconds left on the clock to tie the game 2-2 to finish the 1st period.

Comets outplayed the Crunch and outshot them 12-7.

Three minutes into the 2nd, more good work by Arseneau leads to the 4th PP try for Utica. Not much; a good play by Rafferty at the blue line saved a possession but MacEwen's blind pass to no one gives it away.

Syracuse promptly takes a too many men penalty. A bit more pressure this time and a couple of chances on a flurry in front of the net but no goal. 0/5 on the PP tonight with a SHG surrendered.

Still 2-2, 11:24 left in 2nd.

Bailey grabs the puck in the Syracuse zone, takes a slap shot that is stopped, Perron with a couple of whacks on the rebound and the puck trickles just barely across the goal line for a 3-2 Utica lead with seven minutes to go in the 2nd.

Lind grabs a loose puck in the neutral zone, sends Boucher in on a breakaway, he goes five-hole for a 4-2 Utica lead. Boucher's 5th goal in only three games. Lind with a good assist... extra reason to celebrate his 21st birthday tonight.

Goldobin and MacEwen get a two-man breakaway. A diving Syracuse defender goes sliding by as Goldobin fakes the pass at first, then sends it to the wide open MacEwen who has an almost empty net. 5-2 Utica with 4 minutes left in the 2nd.

Shots are 17-2 so far in the second period. Total domination by the Comets and the fans are happy watching their team dominate their #1 rival.

Hard not to like what I am watching. Utica has pretty much had their way the entire period. Hopefully a sign of things to come. Syracuse is not a weak sister either.

Man oh man Juolevi is slow. Just can't pivot at all.

It's too bad, based on scouting reports, I believe skating used to be one of his assets. I assume that all those injuries have really taken it's toll on him.

2016 NHL Draft prospect profile: Olli Juolevi could be the best defenceman in the class

A graceful skater, he reaches top speed in a hurry, allowing to constantly be an offensive option. Furthermore, his fluidity extends to his pivots and turns, keeping him always in the correct defensive position.

Olli Juolevi Scouting Report: 2016 NHL Draft #7

Juolevi’s strong two-way game is based on his strong skating ability. He has very good speed in both directions, and good acceleration. His pivots are crisp and his edge work is very solid. This allows him to quickly transition from offence-to-defence or vice-versa. This skating allows Juolevi to cover a ton of ice, and to be able to join the rush, or make pinches at the blueline and still get back defensively. Adding core strength would allow Juolevi to improve his balance and be stronger on the puck, as well as better at winning battles in the corners.
