J.D. Burke has apparently been back East covering the Beanpot Tourney and has high praise for Rathbone on TSN 1040....describes his skating as 'Quinn Hughes-like". Likes him better as a prospect than either Madden or McDonough.

Rathbone has had an unconventional career path, even his draft year when he headed back to high school to be close to a brother with autism. Seems like a high-character kid and a potential Harvard grad to boot. And with a shout-out to Woo and Rafferty, he might be the best d-man prospect the Canucks have right now.

Northeastern in the Beanpot Final tomorrow....is it being televised anywhere?

Yeah, he said something along the lines of 'Jack Rathbone could have been a 1st or 2nd rd pick if he didn't stay close to home and play high school hockey'...

The skating, offensive flare and big shot were always there, but it's the reliable defensive play that is solidifying him as a top tier prospect this season. He will rocket up the Canucks prospect depth chart by the start of next season.

Starting to feel like the Canucks could have another potential steal on their hands. Getting a Torrey Krug vibe here.

Not necessarily my opinion....haven't seen either player in action, other than a few YouTube clips. But based on the fact that impact d-men are far harder to uncover than forwards, maybe Burke is basing his opinion on that.

Canucks in a 'no-lose' position with either guy....both Madden and Rathbone trending as NHL players eventually....pretty hard to argue with that when you consider they were third and fifth round draft picks.

Rathbone was a 4th round pick. I haven't had a chance to watch complete game footage of him either, but in shift-by-shift videos his skill, speed and lateral movement look incredible. I think he has an NHL career ahead of him.

O I agree Jackey boy if I could like yours and @Zombotron posts I would, I think Rather is coming along just nicely and with proper patience I think we have a NHL defender here

A friend of mine went to see his son play at Harvard and raved about Rathbone. Considering the fact that he himself was a very good player and his son who’s playing in the NHL I trust his judgment. Rathbones going to be a very good player

My impression of Rathbone in the limited (5 or so) viewings I've had of him over the past couple years is that his skating/puck skills have a lot of upside but that his defensive play and positioning need *a lot* of work. Has reminded me of a forward playing defense - similar style-wise to Jordan Subban but a bit bigger and his edgework is superior.

As our better prospects go, he's probably the guy I'd be least surprised to see moved at the deadline considering how similar his position/profile is to Hughes.

If a team potentially had 2 Bobby Orrs in the system wouldn't it behoove them to hold onto them both and prove it and THEN trade one of them for very big things?

Wouldn't 2 Hughes(es) be a lot like that?

Agreed. Two Hughes is WAY better than one Hughes

Only one guy can get the creamy o-zone starts and top-unit PP time at a time to maximize their skillset. There are hugely diminishing returns on adding additional one-dimensional PP specialist-type defenders to a roster. Also we still have Juolevi as well, who is another version of the same thing.

Hughes is clearly a far better player/prospect than Rathbone and will be that guy. And it's unlikely Rathbone will develop into a high-value asset without getting opportunites where he can produce.

Like, I'm not saying TRADE HIM NOW. But if you're looking at moving one of our better prospects for deadline help, all things being equal it makes the most sense to trade the guy with the most redundant skillset.

Sounds like Rafferty.

I disagree that they would move Rathbone...go back and watch that draft video, he appears to be a Weisbrod favourite. I could see Rafferty going before Rathbone.

Rafferty is a RHS which makes him a bit different, but yes, we have a pile of young skill defenders with defensive issues.

I think you can take Juolevi out of that group as of now. He is no longer a PP specialist. Comets were currently using him on the half wall with the 2nd unit and using Brisebois as the point man until his call-up. Juolevi is way too slow in making up his mind and creates way too many turnovers at the top position. Also can't skate with speed which limits his puck carrying ability. That same lack of speed kills him vs takeaways anywhere between the halfboards and the blueline as he can't catch the puck carrier or worse the streaking offside top man in the box who takes the stretch breakaway pass. His best offense now is the clean outlet/stretch pass when he he has time to look and find it. Those passes produce most of his assists (22).

Hughes, Rafferty, and now Rathbone look to have passed him by as far as the offensive D-man is concerned.
