I always see people bringing up the mythical 96 points for a playoffs spot argument up, but have people actually looked at the points needed to make the playoffs in the West over recent years? I decided to look up the number of points by the 3rd place teams in the WC race (because you just need 1 more point than them to qualify) and I was surprised and this is from someone who already thought the 96 point benchmark was a load of crap.
Points needed to make the playoffs in the west under the current playoff format:
2016-17: 88 points
2015-16: 83 points
2014-15: 96 points
2013-14: 90 points
Going back 6 more years under the previous playoff format:
2012-13: 94 points (pro-rated from 55 points due to 48 game season)
2011-12: 91 points
2010-11: 96 points
2009-10: 91 points
2008-09: 90 points
2007-08: 89 points
I would love for someone to explain to me where this mythical 96 points came from because over the last 10 years in the Western Conference 90 points would have gotten you in the playoffs 50% of the time, 92 points 70% of the time. Only twice in the last decade has 96 points been required to earn a berth in the Western Conference.
