Why I don’t really want Coyle
When everyone is healthy where do you see Cave fitting in? I think JFK looks pretty good on the 3rd line so I’d keep him there unless they make a trade for someone else.

I think Kuraly’s game would work better on wing, fast player that’s good on the forecheck. Someone will probably post advanced stats that will prove me wrong but I don’t like Kuraly’s possession game or passing game. I haven’t seen much of Cave but he showed a little of both last night. I wonder if the 4th would look better with Cave at center and Kuraly at RW.

I’m very irrational over Colby Cave right now.

I may going out to eat for Chinese food and after 1 Mai Tai I probably will have Cave as the next Ryan Getzlaf.

He ‘seems’ to:

Skate well
Make good decisions
Play with pace and physical tone

I need to see more but he started the season at 23 wearing a letter and after 15 games a decent sample size his PPG has jumped from 0.4 to 1.1.

That could be an anomaly but last Saturday in Providence it looked anything but. I went there to watch Senyshyn & Cehlarik and didn’t even know Cave was playing but exited thinking Cave was most impressive player.

Eric watched all the games and I texted him and said is Cave really this good or is this a fluke and he replied he’s been a beast

guys are usually drafted based on inherient abilities that translate better towards eventual success... things that can be quantified and measured. a guy who has size will always have size. a guy who skates fast will always skate fast. a guy who displays hockey sense as a kid will very likely display hockey sense as a pro

but the x factor that comes into play is things like hungar… how much does a kid want it that might allow him to improve? how coachable is he? is he someone that will get stronger? is he someone that might have been distracted as a kid and didn't show well but he gets his act together a couple years later?

when a guy starts off rated very highly... he will keep his rating until he does something to lose it. and conversely if a guy starts off behind the 8-ball he will remain a suspect until he answers all the questions

you almost seem like you would be expecting us all to dump on the high picks the second they struggle? but we know that some struggle... and then come through. high picks succeed at a higher rate. there is very good reason you continue to give them rope and opportunity

at the same time if a kid has a 'resultful season' where he all of a sudden puts up numbers in a lower league... you seem to be suggesting we should all get very excited and immediately project this kid as a pro? but the problem is... dominating at lower leagues has never had much to do with being a successful pro unless the inheritent abilities are there that explain why the lower league domination is meaningful. by itself success at lower leagues isn't meaningful unless its a result of abilities that will allow further success at the higher levels

Here's what I do. I forget about rankings and hype and draft position and watch them play hockey.

Here's what I do. I forget about rankings and hype and draft position and watch them play hockey.

but then you are forgetting about many other people who watched them. no one of us has eyes 24/7. when I see aaron dell play hockey maybe I watched the last 2 games when he pitched shutouts? maybe I feel this guy is about to become the next great white hope {and for the record I do have him on my keeper team in the hfl so yes... I am a fan of his}

but aaron dell is 29 years old. he has played more than 2 games. there are reasons he is 29 and no one has ever made him a starter before.

could he overcome what his problems are... and become something now? we all saw tim Thomas become something after bouncing around forever so it might happen... but is it likely?

suppose I saw aaron dell pitch 2 shutouts this week... and I saw carter hart do it. who should I be higher on? who should I predict is in line for a better career?

you cant simply rely on what you see with your own eyes. I saw vladamir rudzicka undress 5 buffalo sabers on the ice with an end to end rush that was one of the most beautiful goals ive ever seen. I saw him flipping the puck over the back of the net and setting up goals this way... my god he was a beautiful player to watch.

I remember all the hype for little Robbie schremp… I didn't see him myself but he put some youtube vids on the computer and 1000s of people saw them and screamed with lust over all the puck tricks this kid knew.

seeing with your own eyes can often mislead you unless you know what you are looking for. its often not the spectacular things guys do that matter. sometimes its more important to be looking at the problems a guy has

take tim Thomas for example... his style was always good for highlight saves. I remember when he came to oiler camp and everyone was very impressed with his highlights. Thomas was always a super acrobatic guy who would scramble and look impressive with his successes. but it was never that problem that was keeping him out of the nhl. Thomas allowed too many soft goals because he was out of position so often. a person needed to know what they were looking at with their own eyes if they wanted to evaluate Thomas.

eventually Thomas got enough coaching... or listened to it... and adapted... and he was able to defy the odds and become an nhl goalie. but when he was 22-23-24 he was even more athletic but further away from being an nhl goalie. it wasn't his skills that were ever a problem.

a lot of kids are like this... for a lot of them its about paying the price... living the lifestyle... the amount of training required to stay in shape.. the amount of pain they have to endure and play through

a kid like me {when I was a kid} if I had a bruised up rib... trust me I can barely roll out of bed to go to the tv and turn the game on. I just don't have the mental abilitylike a Bergeron to bust a bone and go back on the ice 10 mins later...

you grade these prospects to begin with... on raw skills. because that's what we all see on first glance. and when they have raw skills we give them the benefit of the doubt. maybe their other aspects aren't up to nhl standards but at least they got the raw skills.

I mean you could give a guy like me all the hunger and smarts in the world to become a player... but my raw skills make it impossible. it doesn't matter how much coaching you give me... how hard I work to get in shape... nothing will ever allow me to be an nhl player.

things like hunger and work do matter... but only when you start off with enough raw skill to make it possible

After Studnicka (1) and Vaakanainen (2) it is a total crapshoot for the rest of the bunch. The pool is looking a little shallow. It's funny to look back and see Trent Frederic ranked as the #2 prospect last year at 51% (I honestly think I'm in that grouping as well) So in theory, he should have a good shot at #1 seeing Donato (#1 Ranked) was traded. I struggle to even put him Top 4 this season. I like Lauko and Steen a lot, and think they should be high on the list. John Beecher needs a good college season before you can really rank him high up, but he has potential to shoot up the rankings next year.

It should be an interesting list, even with the talent lacking.

Yeah, I put Beecher at 3 because of his size and speed, but after two it’s pretty even and anyone’s guess. It’s mostly a who’s your favorite prospect anyway.

I'd say these are the 5 players in my top's but I'd go:

1.) Studnicka
2.) Vaakanainen
3.) Steen
4.) Lauzon
5.) Lauko

Yeah, I agree top 5,the order is the hard part. I really like the high engines and skill set of both Steen and Lauko and I placed Lauzon 1st just because I feel he's the most ready and appears to be solid in all areas, but I wouldn't dispute any order.

Kyle Keyser is top five, maybe even top three.

Honestly, this is a year I could see a guy like Keyser sliding into the Top 5. I personally don't have him there, but I wouldn't scoff at the idea. I think he's their top goalie prospect and has #1 potential. It's crazy how he went undrafted.

We really missed the boat on Clifton. What a year he had.

From the sounds of it, this board is going to be sleeping on Steen this year. Guy had a huge year in Sweden.

I'm jumping on the Oskar Steen train. He's #3 for me and I think he has a big year for Providence and really turns some heads.

I`d never heard of him before and put little effort in following him too much on here. I was terribly concerned about him getting the nod in the playoffs but the kid`s a gamer and proved this fan wrong, another case of you just never know
