Maybe, except the smurfs on Tampa Bay dominated the AHL for a couple years before they got promoted:

Conacher (5'8 181) at 22: 75g 39-41 80 114 PIM
Johnson (5'8 183) at 21: 75g 31-37 68, PO 14g 6-8 14,
next year 62g 37-28 65, PO 18g 10-11 21
Point and Kucherov were 1st and 2nd rd picks.

Gourde is the only parallel to Martel, and he's still 10 lbs heavier and didn't make it until 26 after a top AHL season.
Gourde (5'9 172) put up similar numbers to Martel at age 23 and 24, age 25: 56g 22-26 48, PO 22g 9-18 27
didn't do much that year with TB, 20g 6-2 8, then last year 82g 29-35 64

So for Martel to have a chance, he needs to be a PPG+ scorer and dominate the AHL - if he's not a dominating scorer in the AHL he has no place in the NHL.

There's a guy on the Flyers right now who dominated the AHL and is the same size and age as Gourde.
