Yes, it will unfortunately. But actually Smith was the 4C before Gauthier. Smith got claimed off the worst team in a decade and the Leafs STILL chose him over GOAT. GOAT only got in when Smith got injured, then got sent back. And Smith is really bad. Regarding this upcoming year, they still would have signed Moore IMO. Moore is 10x Gauthier for the same price practically.

Smith was only claimed and played because he had to get games in to be ED eligible. He's good as gone now.

He was claimed LAST year. He is the Marlies #1 or #2 center this year along with Greening. Brooks/Mueller #3/4. Gauthier when he returns?????

yes guys yes, after about 30-40 into year, you know if your in playoff hunt or not...and we were, and babs played gauthier 20 important games right in middle of year, if we didnt find way to trade for a vet upgrade in boyle or someone else he probably plays out entire year...imo hes on team now if he didnt get injured

you people only seem to know about the offensive role that players play...we have strong defensive PKing wingers, but we still missing that strong defensive, PKing, faceoff C, that is very important to a team, and gauthier has potential to fill that role perfectly and add a massive 6'5 240 body to the team going forward...a guy like this is having problems cracking our top 20 prospects list lol

A big part of this is that many people see Gauthier's maximum potential as a 4th line guy with little or no offence. Those players generally aren't that hard to acquire - for example, we just signed a solid #4 centre in Dominic Moore. I place more value on prospects who have some potential to be something more than that, even if they are less likely to achieve it. For example, Greenway has a long road to go down, but he has some intriguing possibilities if he figures things out. Timashov has the potential to be a player, etc. Gauthier just doesn't have that potential in the view of most Leafs' fans.

It's not that we only care about offence. It's that 4th-line defensive players aren't difficult or expensive to acquire as a general rule. If Gauthier becomes everything he's being 'hyped' to be, he's still not anything special. Every team has guys like him, maybe not as big, but they have them. Finding offensive players who can also play defence - now that is harder to do.

I'm not sure if Gauthier will ever be an NHLer at this point. Problem is he's slow and isn't exactly a guy who hits everything that moves so difficult to see him transitioning over into a 4th liner. He does have size and good reach but don't think that's going to be enough.

you do realize that the current regimes actually likes to develop players right?

nothing wrong with giving a 21 year old time in the minors as opposed to playing 7-8 mins a night on line 4.
