It's twilight, the sun is down, when the sky turns darker blue the ball literally disappears. But to answer your question they do build them that way generally, to avoid the sun and it's also about wind speeds.

To be honest I was a kid when zaun was the jays catcher but I thought he was nothing more then a back up catcher. He just seems way to into himself sometimes
