Pretty sure the #1 goalie usually plays more games then the backup. So in a post mocking how MAF was called the #1, I do think it's pretty relevant to what was posted.

Since it was discussing last year in the playoffs, not the #1 this season, I don't see how it was relevant. Anyway, I don't disagree that MAF could play more games than MM this season.

Yeah i was mocking the fact that the guy said MAF should have been the the starter in the playoffs. I dont doubt that he will start more than MM this season.

I can't predict the starting splits with how Sully operated last year.
We're talking about a guy who started Murz in a meaningless game #82 knowing MAF wasn't ready for the start of the PO's.

He'll play the hot hand alot. The one that gives him and his team the most confidence.
The unknown, right now, is who'll be that hot hand.
I can only guess who that'll be atm.

Same thing happened to the pens. They had to go through the caps whereas the lightning got to sleepwalk through the first two rounds.

Makes last seasons triumph that much sweeter.
We beat the best of the best.

Cullen put out his fantasy rankings. That's pretty much what I think the splits will look like. Not sure about the rest, but I figure MAF will see 47-52 games with Murray seeing 30-35 games (assuming both are healthy).

MAF is ranked #17 with 50 starts, 29 wins, 2.31 GAA and .919 SV%
Murray is ranked #24 w/ 34 starts, 21 wins, 2.04 GAA & .927 SV%

The complete list is here.

That Cullen guy on TSN is terrible, I mean that site isn't great by any means but that guy is so freaking clueless and horrendous with his analysis.

Pouliot playing well on RD would be so huge for us next year. If we could shed Daley, Kunitz, and Fleury, then luxuries like signing Marchand could actually be possibilities.

Marchand - Crosby - Hornqvist
Wilson - Malkin - Sprong
Hagelin - Bonino - Kessel
Rust - Sundqvist - Kuhnhackl

Dumoulin - Letang
Maatta - Pouliot
Cole - Schultz

Murray
Jarry?

Bonino for 3.5 is wishful thinking, I could easily see Marchand getting 7 plus on the open market as well.

Also, Vasilievsky signed for $3.5 million, so I don't see why Murray would sign for one dollar less than that.

He won't. If Murray plays really well this year (920+ sv%, low 2's in GAA, deep playoff run) and he wants a long term deal, there's no reason why he shouldn't get 5MM per. If he opts for a bridge deal, it's probably in the 4MM range for a few years and then getting elite money long term deal after.

In this case we would have good cap flexibility. But realistically I think there should be another three million used for Marchand/Bonino/Dumoulin/Murray. I would also want a B goalie that is capable of playing 20-30 games probably.

I think Bonino'll be gone.

Probably, but the Pens will need to fine a 3C somewhere else. Cullen will be gone and I don't think Fehr will be up for the task of a scoring line 3C. Maybe they can groom Guentzel at center, but he seemed to be a fit at top 9 LW.

I doubt it. I don't think there's a single comparable out there who made 4m in their 2nd contract as a goalie. And he doesn't have nearly the number of games Vasi does under his belt.

Sure he can point to the cup and say "yeah well this". But that's not going to go nearly as far as some think when it comes to a contract for him. So while I think it's optimistic to think he'd go lower then Vasi, neither do I see him going any higher. 3-3.5m over 3 years.

I'm not really sure on letting Bonino go, unless Guentzel can be capable of replacing him, or Sundqvist works hard on his offensive upside. The reason why I would be wary, is because the only possible free agent next year, that would be a 3C I would want apart from Bonino, would be Hanzal. And that is kind of a pipe dream I guess. I would also rather not trade for a good 3C, because they can be pretty pricey.

At this point I'd like to keep Bonino. I'm just saying if he has a big year with Hag and Kessel, his asking price could be over 4MM. I'm not really comfortable paying over 4MM. I might go for 4MM for 4 years or something if there isn't a restrictive NTC, but that's dependent on this season and that would be my max.

We likely can't find a better player for 4MM for our offense unless it's a trade candidate.

It'll be a few years until we can afford another high priced winger, IMO. With 87, 71 and 81 up front, we really don't need one right now. Just find them some complementary players and plug in your youth.

When the stars start to decline, the salary cap should allow us to get more help for them. And possibly extend our window a few more years.

Really? He just won a Cup. If he plays 40-50 games and is playoff starter with a 920 sv%, how does he not get more than 3.5?

Markstrom just signed a 3.7MM deal with 83 career games under his belt with decent, but not great stats. Murray will have 50-60 RS games under his belt plus at least 1 long playoff run as starter. I can't see how Murray doesn't get at least that on a 3 year deal.

Toying with a Marchand signing next season:

Not that I would really get my hopes up, but situations like Brad Marchand possibly becoming available in UFA 12 months from now are why you don't throw piles of money and term at question marks like Mikkel Boedker just to be able to say you did something in the offseason.
