Really? He's only produced (or been on pace to in the LO season) 40+ points in each of the last 7 seasons. Oh and never missed a game in any of those seasons.

542 games, 63 goals, 325 points. That's on average 0.11 GPG (9.5) and 0.599 PPG (49.1) while being durable. There's two knocks that come to mind. 1) he turns 30 in Sept. That said, he's yet to miss a game in 7 years and he's a pretty good skater. 2) His defensive game is suspect.

The bottom line is guys who can move the puck and produce (and he does both) are always in demand. Honestly, this doesn't really surprise me at all. I find your shock and outrage more surprising than FLA giving him that contract.

Wasn't Yandle playing on New York's third pair last season? Or at least a part of it. Maybe he's a better fit in Florida. Him and Ekblad could be dangerous on the power play together. But this isn't far off from a contract you give a franchise player, not a bottom pairing defenseman. But I guess this is what the market is demanding.

Look at the way the Florida Panthers are run. Reckless owner who installed his son who knows very little about hockey let alone anything about running an NHL franchise. Of course they are going to overpay for brand name players.

Wow, filled up a whole thread in a day and a half nice.

Anyways, the whole NTC thing for Fleury makes it wven more important that he is traded this off-season. It's reported he has a 12 team NTC. He could easily suck up playing a 1A role next season and block any 12 teams that have even close to a question mark in net, which would make it next to impossible to trade him. He knows that if he is bull-headed and blocks all those teams that we will be forced to trade Murray. That would really blow. Rutherford absolutely needs to deal him in the next couple of days. And this is hoping that he didn't already have teams like Calgary or Dallas on his list. Hopefully the success Calgary had last season made him not put them on his list but who knows.

Considering the Panthers are paying Yandle (almost) a million less than they were paying Campbell, I think they're pretty happy right now.

Yandle plays a smart game and the vast majority of Rangers fans are sad to see him go. They may not have wanted to see Gorton give him the 7-year deal that Tallon/Rowe gave him, but he'll be missed there. I believe he led them in ATOI in the series against the Pens. Yandle will make it so Ekblad doesn't get too much piled on him too soon. That's a nice benefit.

I'm actually pretty surprised that neither Yandle nor Goligoski wanted to wait a few more days just to listen to pitches from other teams. I wonder how much hardball Florida and Arizona played -- i.e., here's our offer, but it's coming off the table if you wait until the league-wide negotiating window opens.

Guys like Demers and Hamhuis (if he wants) are about to get PAID. The UFA market for D-men was already pretty weak, and it just got SIGNIFICANTLY weaker in the pst 2 days. I can see Edmonton throwing stoopid money at Demers if they can wiggle it.

Surprising to see the cap teams being aggresive and signing those Gogo and Yandle to those huge contracts. Good for them.

Yeah, I dunno. Yandle's always seemed really overrated to me, even back when there were rumors about the Pens targeting him years ago. That contract he signed is ****ing nutty to me.

Rangers get worse losing Yandle.
Without a doubt. Skjei can't play those minutes yet. It's going to be a stupid competition for the UFAs that are left now that the two best available puck-movers are gone.

For as much as every fanbase complains about their bad contracts to vets, it's always comforting to remember that the Rangers have Dan Girardi signed for four more years at $5.5M per.

I'm fine doing nothing in July and waiting for a hockey trade. Still hope we can get Hoffman somehow.

I guess it doesn't hurt as much when you're replacing Campbell and that contract with this one. Yandle may still have a few good years left, but I'm really not sure if his career is in the upswing anymore. Maybe he turns it around in Florida and is a good fit, but this seems like a big risk.

On the 'upswing' ? The guy had 99 points as a D the last 2 seasons. That puts him 8th among D men, just ahead of Byfuglien and behind Barrie and Giordano. Byfuglien makes 7.6m till he's 35 and Giordano makes 6.75m till he's 38.

Yandle was brutal since he left the defensive minded Dave Tippett system in Phoenix. His play got really exposed since the trade.

He was significantly better once AV gave him a little more leeway.

This isn't making me really optimistic about resigning Schultz for 2-3 million either.

The thing that makes me optimistic regarding Schultz is he knows just how ****** playing for someone like Edmonton is, versus taking a paycut to play for a successful team.

Wouldn't blame him if he chased the money though. Somebody out there will give him $4.5M.

We better stay away from free agency. The prices will get ridiculous now that the top 2 defense men are gone.

I dont expect the Penguins to be active on day 1 or 2 unless they can grab a guy they like on a 1 or 2 year deal... I'd expect them to let free agency play out over the first few days and then go bargain hunting

and until they trade Fleury (assuming they do), they wont have much money to throw around anyway

Any maf trade is likely to take place before the draft. I hope they dont see all that cap space and overpay for someone. Although at this point I trust in JR. He will do great im sure.

I still think this team should heavily pursue Boedker or Okposo. Of course, that's assuming MAF is moved and JR would then move Kunitz, but those are two guys (Okposo especially) that'd do wonders for solving our top-6 issues.

Meh, Schultz was playing 14 minutes a night. Yandle was playing 20+ minutes a night. I don't really think there's a comparable here.

Naw. Best I see him getting is 3-3.5m over 3 years. And even then someone is taking a pretty big risk.

Byfuglien is a ****ing mess defensively. He's like Schultz in that regard. Great in transition and usually pretty good about getting the puck out of the zone. But his actual defensive reads? Yeah, they're no better than Yandles.

I could see them kick tires on some of the more skilled but lower tier FAs (Hudler, Vrbata, Versteeg) assuming they'll sign reasonable contracts. But other than that? I do not see any major changes outside of MAF moving happening (and if he goes a backup coming in). I don't even think Kunitz will get moved unless there's someone who Rutherford see's as an upgrade coming in and needs his roster/cap space.

I'm ok with overpaying for someone as long as it's a 1 year deal.... they need to keep future cap flexibility with Dumo, Bonino, and Daley potentially needing paid by next summer... not committing much money past this year plus Kunitz coming off the books will help be able to plan for that and be able to comfortably negotiate with guys like Bonino and Dumo throughout the year (I dont think Daley because of expansion draft complications)

regardless, I'm not expecting any big splash moves in free agency that would require a long term deal

I'd like to have Schultz back.... I wouldnt go more than 2 years/$2-2.25 million per season

I just think he's the perfect guy to take a 1 year deal, have a real solid year as a 3rd pairing/2nd PP guy, and try to cash in next summer

he's still got some upside and I like his RH shot... but he was far from great in the postseason when he was in the lineup..... like I said, I'd love him but, but if they lose him I wont lose much sleep
