Any thoughts on what CHL overage player may get signed when the season is done?

But he was good enough at development camp that I saw Canucks fans who wanted him to get an ELC over Carcone, who did get one. Also, the Canucks must have been somewhat impressed with D'Aoust in training camp, as they gave him a try-out with their AHL club in Utica, rather than releasing him outright.

I fully expect MacEwen and Shirley both will, largely based on how much bigger they are than the rest of the players on that list. Don't forget Las Vegas can sign these guys, too, and with former Brandon GM Kelly McCrimmon as one of their chieft scouts, I fully expect them to look at WHL overagers.

Ryan Mantha

Thanks for putting this list together. Did you consider former Rangers draft pick Ryan Mantha of Niagara whom the Rangers did not sign? Elite Prospects has him as the third leading OHL scoring defenseman.

It might be useful to have a separate list of the top ten free agent scoring defensemen to get a better sense of defense prospects. Only 3 defensemen make the top scoring list.

No, I didn't think to include unsigned, previously drafted players.
There are a few guys I am aware of and having been keeping an eye on (D'Aoust, Goulet, and Highmore, really. Raddysh too.), but for the rest of the list, truthfully, I just went through the eliteprospects stats lists for the WHL, OHL, and QMJHL, sorted by "undrafted", and brute forced a list together of all 1996 born players - so those unsigned players like Mantha would not have showed up, even though they are FAs.

Can someone clarify whether the Oilers need to sign Ziyat Paigin and Miroslav Svoboda soon? I see on this list that they are listed as rights not expiring, but I've also seen something floating around that since they were drafted as 20 year old Euros the Oilers have to sign them by June 1 or lose their rights...

Yes, players drafted at twenty or older out of Europe have their rights held for two years, so since they were both drafted in 2015, they will need to be signed by June 1 of this year.

Was Williams a free agent, or did Washington retain his rights this past year while he was in Hershey?

I knew someone would sign him at his size after his overage season. Time will tell if he's Connor Brown or Dane Fox.

Or even more recently, Jon Martin. Martin was a solid, unspectacular WHL player, put up seasons of 10, 16, 18, 24 points then in his overage year, exploded for 38 goals and 69 points. Signed with San Jose, in his first year of pro hockey, he's had 1 goal and 3 assists in 22 AHL games before being re-assigned to the ECHL.

Buyer beware. Some guys play well when all of a sudden they are top dog age wise, a flash in the pan basically

/snip

From what I can tell, he's only 18, and has had a huge break out year with 61 points so far this season in 59 games, as a RHD, which are of pretty high demand (at least quality RHDs are, of course). I think someone will draft him in somewhere between the 2nd and 5th rounds at this year's draft. I don't really know much about him, aside from his stat-line and his position, so I can't make a good educated guess when he might get taken, but I think he definitely will get picked, none-the-less. He's also leading his team in scoring. Pretty good for an undrafted 18 year-old Dman, I'd say. Hope the Oilers take a flier on him if he's still available with a 3rd or 4th rounder.

A little bit more info on him:

So is Mason Mitchell going to Play for Hershey right now.
He's reporting to Hershey next week on an ATO

Was Williams a free agent, or did Washington retain his rights this past year while he was in Hershey?
He was on an AHL deal for this season. My thought was it was a "prove it" type deal where if he played well they were going to give him an ELC.

Right, right.

It's semantics, but I'm just curious, for my own sake.

Was he an RFA, and they signed him to an AHL deal until he earned this NHL deal, or did they not retain his rights, making him UFA, free to sign anywhere, but he agreed to an AHL where Washington could keep an eye on him, and signed him after they liked what they saw?
