Machinehead is creating a formula right now that automatically adjusts Clendening positively and Hayes negatively. ;)

Things I noticed

  • Kreider and Grabner only received two grades each below A-
  • Mother of God, Brady Skjei is overrated
  • People are too hard on Klein
  • Marc Staal was the most divisive player, receiving every grade from an F to a B+
  • Surprised 35 people voted for Hrivik and not even 20 for Buchnevich when Hrivik has only played six more games

I think people base their grades on how the player performed compared to what their expectation was. That is why Holden has such a high rating. Same goes for Skjei. For a rookie D-man, he is pretty good this season.

Please rate the following on an A through F scale after 41 games and provide any comments.

Adam Clendening - INC
Dan Girardi - F- - just go away
Kevin Klein - C
J.T. Miller - B+
Matthew Puempel - INC
Kevin Hayes - B+
Marc Staal - D
Jesper Fast - B- (he's being the best Jesper Fast he can be - Fast + Lindberg is good)
Chris Kreider - A
Derek Stepan - A-
Nick Holden - B+ one positive surprise on D
Oscar Lindberg - C - bad when he came back, now decent - will never be a great player but is solid in 4th line-type duty
Jimmy Vesey - B- - good start, less visible now.
Ryan McDonagh - A - our one great defenseman. Please keep G away from him!!
Mats Zuccarello - B+
Nicklas Jensen - INC
Michael Grabner - A- - great pickup. fast like Hags but more of a scorer, less of a forechecker.
Marek Hrivik - C+ - showing himself to be a solid 4th-liner type possession forward.
Rick Nash - B+
Brandon Pirri - D - doesn't impress me so much, especially now that he's not scoring.
Brady Skjei - C - first full year in the league. Seems like an NHL defenseman.
Pavel Buchnevich - INC
Mika Zibanejad - INC

Henrik Lundqvist - B - some cruddy moments but basically very solid. I wonder how fed up he is with our crappy D.
Antti Raanta - B+ - mostly very good in backup role.

Jeff Gorton - A- - good acquisitions, esp Grabner, Holden. Made Glass disappear.
Alain Vigneault - C - good system, bad deployment. Stop playing Girardi - he's done.
Scott Arniel/Power play - ??
Jeff Beukeboom/Darryl Williams/Penalty killing - ??
Benoit Allaire/Goaltending - A - Rangers always get good goaltending.

New for 2017:
Sam Rosen - C - great voice, urgency in tone, but misses stuff, too slow for hockey. Too willing to advance MSG narratives ("Glass looks faster than last year!", etc.)
Joe Micheletti - D- - can't stand him. adds little. too many stories when play-by-play should be happening. Also too willing to advance MSG narratives.
John Giannone - B- - I prefer his play-by-play to Sam's
Al Trautwig ??? don't watch
Bill Pidto ??? kind of a bozo.
Ron Duguay ??? ditto
Steve Valiquette - A - good analysis, smart, well-spoken.
Kenny Albert - B - good play-by-play, voice is a little squirrely.
Dave Maloney - A - good color guy, great personality.

Seems there was mostly broad enough consensus.
some may quibble a bit here/there, but for most part
names are in mostly projected order
their numbers are ballpark as was expected.

Thanks to Machinehead
for taking on this assignment

Thanks MH.

Pirri judged too harshly (e.g. as compared to Hrivik).

Zuke too. He should be closer to Stepan. Stepan had a typical slow start that was covered by KZB and Hayes' lines production while Zuke slump that wasn't any longer was more apparent. Zuke's contribution to the recent success of Kreider-Stepan-Zuke line is not lesser than Stepan's.

How is Skjei overrated? He's having a GREAT rookie season. Currently 5th in rookie assists and 2nd among D.

Would any one be opposed to including an overall team grade in the next one? I think it would be interesting to see the correlation between our perception of individual players versus the direction and ability of the team as a whole.

Maybe next time we do a team grade with something along the lines of:
Confidence in the team
Skill level of NYR
Direction the team is headed
Overall team grade

Just off the top of my head.

This was really cool to see. As fans it is clear that our perceptions of some players are almost the same across the board and others are wildly different.
