@alex_prewitt: Trotz said MacLellan came with a list of possible [free agent] invites, but Trotz didn't want to send the wrong message to younger Caps.

Trotz would have no problem sending that message in Nashville. His treatment of young players is one of the things I'll be watching most closely this season.

Also very curious to see who was on that list.

I'm amazed that Morris hasn't gotten a deal somewhere yet.

A few of those D have PTOs elsewhere. Not Morris...strangely enough.

Not really surprised at no PTOs, esp. on D given the numbers. It could have made sense to bring in a forward or two to compete but if Burakovsky really is being penciled in as a regular there aren't really any spots open. Creating additional options for trades would have made sense but there's not really much left up front...Loktionov is the only option kind of interesting and I'm not sure he's healthy yet.

They'll give token looks to many of the prospects and look to leave lasting impressions on them in game action but narrowing it down quickly makes sense. After the first three pre-season games (three games in four days) I'd expect them to narrow it down considerably.

Goalies will split half the game.

Seems like your offense is good. How about your defense?

Should be a fun game. You guys will maybe have your own stream on the website, but if not csnphilly.com is said to be streaming it.

Is Trotz taken with Capitals prospect or what... Hard to recall a caps coach this positive. Curious to know if he was like this in Nashville or what.

The Caps have 5 solid. they have hillen who trotz knows. they have orlov, carrick and Schmidt who played a good number of nhl games last season.

do they need a tryout veteran to take early pre season minutes away from those guys from 6 on down?

Noticed a trend I guess. Ovi's possible RWs on blue are AHLers and Backstroms possible LWs are AHLers with his RWs being Ward or Fehr.

Hunter, I cut and pasted your teams over on the BB's.

Super excited to see how Burka does, all the other slots are filled I think.

Only disappointment for me will be if Orlov is healthy and doesn't make the top six over guys like Erskine or Hillen.

Hey all, more meaningful later in camp, but sort of has become an annual tradition and this list is easier to maintain than other formtats, as well:

(AHL indicates HBH or HBH/SC contract; ECHL indicates SC contract; UDP Unsigned draft pick; FA free agent)

After a quick review, looks like all the players under contract with HBH were invited to start of main Caps camp. Three players from rookie camp not invited to stay for the main camp: Cole Wilson, Braden Christoffer, Ben Woodley

33 F: Backstrom, Broda (AHL), Brown, Brouwer, Burakovsky, Byers (AHL), Chimera, Conner, Cornet (AHL), Diamond, Elgestal (UDP), Fehr, Galiev, Gazley (AHL), Herbert, Johansson, Kennedy, Koules (FA), Kuznetsov, Laich, Latta, Mitchell, Newbury, O’Brien (FA), Ovechkin, Pimm (AHL), Spencer (AHL), Stephenson, Volpatti, Vrana, Walker, Ward, Wellman

plus 2 F Inj: Beagle, Wilson

22D: Alzner, Bowey, Burgdoerfer (AHL), Cajkovsky (AHL), Carlson, Carrick, Djoos, Epp (AHL), Erskine, Green, Haar (AHL/UDP), Hillen, Kundratek, Landry, Lewington (UDP), Moore, Niskanen, Oleksy, Orpik, Schilling, Schmidt, Wey

plus 1 inj D: Orlov

6G: Copley, Grubauer, Holtby, Peters, Reichard (FA), Vanecek

plus 2 inj G: Anderson, Pasquale

Also, a reminder about exhibition / preseason games:

15.4 Exhibition Games. … c) A Club shall be permitted to dress a minimum of eight (8) veterans for any Exhibition Game. For purposes of this Section 15.4©, a veteran shall constitute either: (1) a forward or defenseman who played in thirty (30) NHL Games during the previous season, (2) a goaltender who either dressed in fifty (50) or more NHL Games or played in thirty (30) or more NHL Games in the previous season, (3) a first round draft choice from the most recent year’s Entry Draft, or (4) any Player who has played one-hundred (100) or more career NHL Games…

Any thoughts on lines coming out of training camp?

I think we know at least the top 5 D spots are pretty solidified and will be some type of combination between offensive Dmen (Niskanen, Carlson, Green) and stay at home guys (Alzner, Orpik). I imagine Orlov will get a shot at the #6 spot once healthy with Hillen maybe in the #7 slot?

Forwards get a little stickier. It seems to me that really the only givens are the 1LW and 1C spots with Ovi and Backs and the 3LW and 3RW spots with Chimmer and Ward.
