We lost our 1st rounder in 2014 in the Marty St Louis trade with Tampa Bay
We lost our 2014 5th rounder to San José in the Ryan Clowe trade in 2013 with San Jose as the predetermined conditions were met
The Rangers acquired Columbus’ 2014 6th round pick along with Derick Brassard, Derek Dorsett and John Moore from Colmbus in exchange for Marian Gaborik, Blake Parlett and Steve Delisle. The Rangers then traded Columbus’ 2014 6th round pick along with Benn Ferriero to Minnesota in exchange for Justin Falk.
We lost our 7th rounder in 2014 (conditional) to The LA Kings in the Danny Carcillo trade. Condition being that if Carcillo spends the rest of the season on the Rangers’ roster, Los Angeles gets the pick

Would the Yotes be interested in Staal? Do a deal centered around Staal for Yandle to add more offense from the D and help the PP? Sign Grabo (presuming he signs for $4 million) and Winnik. Resign Stralman, Poo, D. Moore, and Carcillo. Move Dorsett for a pick.

Kreider - Stepan - Nash
Hagelin - Grabo - MSL
Poo - Brassard - Zucc
Winnik - D. Moore - Fast
Carcillo

McD - Girardi
Yandle - Stralman
J. Moore - Klein
Diaz?

Lundqvist
Talbot

Grabovski had 35 points in 58 games. That breaks down to 49 over 82. Brass had 45 in 81 games. There isn't much of a difference. What the hell makes you think Grabovski is so much better than Brassard?

sort of PPG, become hockey expert?

- Brassard is soft, and shies away from contact. Grabo is not and does not.
- Brassard was heavily sheltered with o-zone starts this past year. Grabo has historically gotten a ton of d-zone starts, including this past year.
- Brassard is a willing, but not instinctive or good defensive player.
- Brassard is often careless with the puck and tries low % plays more than he should. Grabo is an excellent posession player.
- Brassard had 27 of his 45 points come at ES, or 60%. Grabo had 27 of his 35 points come at ES, or 77%.
- Grabo is a true two way player capable of checking top players and succeeding - this is all he did the lockout year in Toronto when he had a ridiculous 40% d-zone start.

Cliffs: Grabo is better at hockey, will cost in the same neighborhood, has actually had seasons over 25 goals and 50 points. I'm sure I could come up with more if I dug into things. New York should get him.

The 4th line went from awesome to terrible. Yuck. No offense, man, but that 4th line is pretty damn bad.

Why are we trading Dorsett?

There's absolutely no chance the Yotes trade Yandle for anything. Their problem is offense and he's a legit PP QB in a league bereft of them and a 50 point per year guy at a moderate cap charge for two more years.

Like, literally zero chance. It would take a young PPG forward. Think RNH or Hall or Seguin.

Yandle wouldn't net the Yotes any of those guys unless something pretty decent is added from the Yotes side. We aren't talking about a Norris caliber Dman here. Yes he's an offensive PPQB but he's not worth more than McD.

Re posting this.

I don't understand why a 45 point 2C is terrible. The Top 30 Centers in the NHL last year scored 54 points. Derick Brassard was 48th among centers in points with 45. That puts him squarely in the middle of the 2C pack.

Furthermore, only 14 teams in the NHL had 2 centers that were ranked ahead of Brass. That's according to the NHL.com at least. Some of those "centers" probably played wing, like O'Reilly (who's on there).

Those teams are:
PIT 2 (Crosby, Malkin)
ANA 2 (Getlzaf, Bonino)
SJ 3 (Thornton, Pavelski , Couture)
LA 2 (Kopitar, Carter)
COL 4 (Duchene, O'Reilly, MacKinnon, Stastny)
BOS 3 (Krejci, Bergeron, Soderberg)
NYI 2 (Tavares, Nielsen)
OTT 2 (Spezza, Turris)
CBJ 2 (Johansen, Dubinsky)
NSH 2 (Smith, Fisher)
TB 2 (Filppula, Johnson)
TOR 2 (Kadri, Bozak)
CGY 2 (Hudler, Cammalleri)
PHX 2 (Ribeiro, Vermette)

NYR 2 (Stepan, Brassard)

Of those 14 teams, 6 missed the playoffs (NYI, OTT, NSH, TOR, CGY, PHX). Of the remaining 8 playoff teams - 1 won the Stanley Cup (LA), 2 made the Conference Finals (NYR-LA), 5 made the second round (BOS-NYR-PIT-ANA-LA), and 4 were bounced in the first round (COL, CBJ, TB, SJ).

The rest of the playoff teams had only 1 center who scored more points than Derick Brassard.

CHI - Toews (Conference Finals)
DAL - Seguin (Round 1)
MON - Desharnais (Conference Finals)
MIN - Koivu (Round 2)
STL - Backes (Round 1)
PHI - Giroux (Round 1)
DET - Legwand (not even half a year?)

We need to stop acting like this is a huge deal if Brassard only scores 45 points. It seems that 45 points would be enough for a 2C.

And the whole "we need to replace his 51 points" - as others alluded to, Kreider's production is likely to increase, whoever we get to play 3C will score some, MSL's will be there for a full season, and even if he doesn't light the world on fire, whatever he puts up that outproduces Callahan of last year would go to the 51 needed to replace Richards. Increases maybe for Zucc and Stepan.

I'm not that concerned about Brass as a 2C. I think he's really underrated and can still blossom. Go ahead...call me crazy.

Brass's possession #s I believe were great last year. Most of what you said it's opinion and not fact, and that's fine if that's your opinion. I think Grabo is a good player too.

That line will get hemmed in bad and has practically no hope of sustaining offensive zone pressure.

So, yes.

How so? Fast is very good defensively as is Moore. Moore is great at defensive zone faceoffs. Winnik is also good in his own end and can chip in a few.

And Bird in my scenario I moved Dorsett to add some more cap space. I personally don't think he's very good and was riding on the coattails of Boyle/Moore.

That said if Boyle didn't price himself out I'd 100% take him over Winnik.

Well he got 5th in Norris voting in 2011 so we are talking about a Norris calibre Dman here. 12th in 2013 as well.

He's very likely on par with McDonagh. Kreider, Miller, and whoever isn't close to enough. Not "not good enough". Not close.

1. This is a coaching decision and something that AV is known for. If we replaced Brassard with Grabo and put him with Pouliot and Zucc you would likely see the same thing. We don't want that line getting defensive zone starts often, we'd prefer them with better chances on the offense.

2. I don't agree with this at all. He doesnt turn the puck over a ton.

3. Not sure what you're trying to say here? That's an advantage for Brassard if they score the same amount of points at even strength but Brassard has more total. Additionally we want to improve our powerplay making this change as you suggest would harm our powerplay as Brassard was a better PP player (last year at least).

I like Grabovski and would like to add him though. In addition to Brassard. Not at his expense.

It's a line that doesn't do anything particularly well and I question their ability to cycle. Fast especially.

I would not pencil Fast into the lineup in any sport even the 4th line yet. Maybe he will work his way there but form what I saw of him in the NHL this last season he was rather useless. He wasn't really a liability but he didn't contribute at all.

Sorry but 5th in the Norris voting three years ago isn't Norris caliber.

McD put up 10 less points in 5 less games. McD was pacing about a point every 2 games so he would have finished about 7 points less. McD is 10x better in his own end as well.

McD is almost 3 years younger, still improving and had 5 more goals the Yandle last year. McD is the superior player.

1. Yes, but they scored at the same rate this year with one getting a ton of zone starts and the other not. That matters.

2. He'd try passes into a group to try to spring Pouliot way too often. Shoot wide on the wrong side so the puck careened out of the zone way too often. Get pressured and instead of shielding would just cycle it back on the wall which is a negative play once you actually have posession. Once in a while you had some psychic type plays with Zuccarello (mostly before March). The vast majority it became a scrum or it was a giveaway.

3. Grabovski had the same amount of points at even strength in 25 less games. That's a lot. Brassard as a centerman can't disappear at ES over large stretches and he did this past year. He doesn't add enough in other areas to make up for it.

I like Fast, but if we are looking to contend for the Division title and go deep into the playoffs, I don't want him on this roster.

Rangers need at least some grit and size.

I'm skeptical about Miller getting handed a job, but at least he brings physicality and strength.

Also, you don't just chuck some checkers in a blender and voila, 4th line! I mean you can, and we've done that before, but you don't get the quality we got out of it this year, and that was pretty enormous for us.

2) I'm sure you're basing this on your vast amount of seeing the Coyotes 4 times last year. Twice? Nine? Zero? Do you actually watch them? Are you making your read on Yandle based on anything?

I do watch the Yotes whenever I have free time (which last season wasn't as much dealing w a new born) as they are the team I usually root for in the West.

In my opinion McD is more valuable then Yandle. McD can do it all and is developing a nice offensive side to his game. While Yandle isn't a liability on the back end, McD has him by a fair margin when it comes to that side of the game. Yandle is more slick moving the puck and better at getting the rush moving from the back end.
