New York Islanders Draft Evaluation

:isles

Roland McKeown: With the first pick, the selection of Roland McKeown is a great fit within the New York Islanders organization simply because there is no identity on the Islanders backend. Behind the (aging) Lubomir Vishnovsky, and workhorse Travis Hamonic, there isn't a lot of depth. Calvin De Haan and Thomas Hickey (traded to Isles) haven't developed as planned when they were drafted as high first round picks. Roland McKeown is considered to be a top 4 defenseman with the potential to contribute as a top 2 defenseman. He plays a solid two-way game, and has shown he is reliable in his own end and can put up points when needed. He also a decent skater and can play a physical game and is very poised and can play in any situation (PK PP, 5-5). Comparison: Alex Pietrangelo

Alex Nedeljkovic: With a string of mediocre goalies in the past with: Rick DiPietro, (aging) Evgeni Nabokov, Kevin Poulin, Peter Mannino, Joey MacDonald, Yann Danis, Anders Nilsson, Nathan Lawson, Mikko Kostinen etc. The Islanders finally get a future dependable starter and franchise goalie for the first time in 10+ years.... The Islanders have had "goalie-itis", but Nedeljkovic is quick and agile, and positionally sound in net. Despite most goalies being 6'2+ nowadays, his small frame his lateral reflexes and quickness more than makes up for the lack of size.
Comparison: Jonathan Bernier

Christian Dvorak: With all the firepower upfront with John Tavares, Kyle Okposo, Michael Grabner, Thomas Vanek, Frans Neilson, Josh Bailey etc. Dvorak's offensive game might not translate to that style in the NHL but he does have all the tools to be a top 6 contributor when called upon to fill that role. Dvorak has great vision, quickness, dynamic speed, a great stick, and has a great nose for the net. Dvorak is very versatile as a forward as well, because he can play the PK and PP when called upon. Just a great pick that is safe, useful, and his potential is through the roof....
Comparison: Justin Abdelkader

John Quenneville

of the Brandon Wheat Kings!

John's got a great package of size, hockey iq and hockey bloodlines. He came back to the Wheat Kings this year with a renewed commitment to being in shape and the results have come naturally with John being a PPG player in the Dub this year. We look forward to watching him develop!

1 (11) - Michael Dal Colle
2 (41) - Blake Clarke
3 (71) - John Quenneville

That puts a wrap on the Rangers draft. Really thrilled at the outcome considering the picks we were working with.
