Sens GM Bryan Murray says he had a deal that made sense potentially with Nashville for Spezza but Spezza wouldn't waive to go there

Probably a lot to that Eric Staal stuff, then.

Sutts19
@ice_chip was praying we would grab him

On Lukas Sutter

If it were not for trading Brandon in 2012 we probably would have drafted him.

Does any GM in the league love throwing players under the bus more than Murray

Side note: While I love Lindholm it's kind of nice to have a NA player as our 1st pick for the sake of meaningful interviews.

So here's the breakdown for me:

7 - D Haydn Fleury - B
Not an overly ambitious pick, but his upside is pretty solid and he's more likely then anyone else that was available at his spot to reach it. Should be a solid top 4 if not outright top pair guy for us not too long from now.

37 - G Alex Nedeljkovic - A-
Of course it was from the Plymouth Pipeline, but the kid can play (was my 2nd favorite goalie only to Demko) and he was lights out for the US U-18s. Wouldn't be shocked if he's in net for us in 2 years at the U-20s.

67 - W Warren "McLovin" Foegele - A
Medium risk, high reward with this one. Kid is all upside at this point, will be interesting to follow him at UNH next season. Hockey East is always fun to watch, just gives me one more reason to do so.

96 - D Josh Wesley - C
Meh. Picked him too early but he always was going to get picked by someone in the middle rounds. Bloodlines just has too much to say about stuff like that. Decent positional defender but I need to see some time to watch before calling this one either way.

97 - RW Lucas Wallmark - A+
This one on the other hand, holy hell man. How was he still on the board? He's one of the best playmakers in the entire draft. He could use some work on his skating but from an upside standpoint you really would struggle to find better value then this pick here.

127 - C Clark Bishop - B
Yeah I know, where's the upside to this one? Sometimes taking specialists can be a smart move, especially in the later rounds like here. His profile reads exactly like a physical version of Patrick Dwyer or, dare I say it, Darren Helm.

187 - D Kyle Jenkins - B
Not a guy I followed a lot, but he was top 75 in the final central rankings and reads like a good possession defender, never a bad thing to add.

Overall grade: B

Well, unless you're talking about a guy like Ho-Sang, you're probably going to get a ton of boring answers regardless.

I really like the Bishop pick as well as the Wallmark pick. I kind of wish we went with more size but at least we didn't draft any smurfs.

Are you kidding? Size is the first thing they went for. Not like there are a lot of 6'4'' 18 year olds floating around every draft.

Insane that there weren't more deals done. So many teams seem like they need to do something on a variety of fronts...historically, I thought the draft was usually when it happened, rather than post free agency.

Anyway to get the selection threads title with the player names? I drove to the beach today, and it's a pita trying to make heads or tails of the discussion of which player.

Does anyone know when the HF player grades come out? Not that one should put much stock in them since quite a few are ridiculous but still...

I must admit I dig "Canes utilize fifth round choice". I just love the awkward phrasing there. Kudos!

As far as the draft goes, I have nothing substantive to add, save that

Here are my top three hunches for realistic picks if we stay at 7:

1) Michael Dal Colle
2) Robby Fabbri
3) Haydn Fleury

from 6/20. I called it!

The Fleury pick, admittedly was obvious, but I'm at least happy I predicted the guy with the two of three picks that were then available. I have a curious suspicion that Virtanen was our guy and that Fleury was our #7. I at least think Fleury was #6, but since JR is no longer our GM we won't hear the final number.

MacDonald said that the team needed to add size and it was a factor in making selections this weekend. #Canes

Can't disagree with most of the picks, but ugh. I hate this mentality.
“But we weren’t trying to get bigger by sacrificing talent or ability. We think the guys we got are good players, and we think they can skate, which is important in today’s game. And, by all accounts, they’re very character individuals, which is always important to us when we draft players.” - RF.

“We didn’t give up anything in terms of skill or potential, and that’s the important part,” MacDonald said. “The players we got that do have size also bring a lot to the table in terms of their ability to play the game.”

I have no problem with them emphasizing size, I don't think it's an issue. Wallmark isn't big.

We're a small team. They aren't drafting size for the sake of size or leaving quality players behind to take lesser bigger players. If we are going to get out of the east we need some size, to beat the west we'll need a bit more IMO.

I think you guys did really good in the draft. You got the 2nd best dman and arguably the the top goalie. I think you guys also got a steal in Kyle Jenkins who was ranked much higher. I have season tickets to the Hounds and Jenkins for a rookie last season was one of the teams steadiest all around dman on the team. He plays with a ton of poise and confidence and is very good and smooth skating makes a good first pass and can rush the puck. His shot from the point is pretty decent and very accurate that seems to find it's way to the net lots. Defensively he is not bad at all he isn't physical but plays a strong positional game.

Don't forget, by drafting two Plymouth players, Ganly and Tolichinsky's teammate, and McLovin who's going to UNH with Pesce, the Canes save a lot of cash and manpower on scouting. If only they could get Carrick traded to Plymouth :sarcasm:

In my scenario they don't even bother scouting Fleury because he's so good and the guy from the Q because no one wants to go to Quebec.

Agree totally. This 7th round Jenkins pick has been largely ignored, but I also couldn't help but notice this kid was ranked #69 NA skater by CS, just 3 spots after our 3rd rounder Foegele. And a full 35 spots AHEAD of our 5th rounder Bishop. And we got him with pick 187. Impressive.
