Craig Button's most recent list (June 3rd) is interesting, especially considering the guys we've talked about most.

http://www.tsn.ca/draftcentre/feature/?id=49649

Just an example of how 'all over the map' the first round could be outside of the top 5-10 guys IMO.

Yeah that list is a bit exotic. McKeown at 51! I'm not sure what to make of it. Virtanen will be a top 10 pick. No way he gets that far even if he falls. I want to see Bob's final list, that might give a better indication of how things are going to go. I feel like some wild **** is going to happen though. I wouldn't be surprised if the draft unfolded in some unexpected manner.

Thought he was supposed to be way higher?

It is Button, but a segment of people are not high on him... again though, it is Button and his rankings are always all over the place. Like Sanheim, love the kid and he is a good prospect... not a chance I would take him at 8.

I agree that the draft is going to be all over the board after the top two tiers of players are gone.

did button get hit in the head with a puck?
Virtanen is a top 11 pick guaranteed.
hope the other teams go by this because scherbak/goldobin/karlsson should all be higher.

also deangelo at 15?

off ice affects value a lot though. he could be a subban

Subban is just cocky... DeAngelo has some real personality issues.

Some GMs and scouts simply don't care about off-ice issues, just like in any sport. Some care, some don't. Button obviously doesn't think DeAngelo's matter.

Virtanen at 43 lmao. Seriously trade down and grab two or three 2nds if that's the case.

meant skill wise and being a 2nd round pick.

wasn't off-ice issues the main reason seguin was shipped out of boston?

The Avs put up a profile on Larkin. Probably doesn't mean anything but we can pretend they are giving us hints by who they profile

They did the same thing last year, putting up stuff on Barkov, Jones, Mackinnon, Drouin etc. I think they just pick some of the players slotted around the sport where we are supposed to pick and highlight them for the fans to get a feel for them.

Why do people do this every year?

Button's list is his personal ranking...not a list of who will go where. It's been widely discussed that he doesn't have a super high opinion of Virtanen. He's not saying he will get picked in the second round, he's saying he rates him as a second round talent...that's all.

McKenzie's list is always going to be 100x as accurate because it's a poll from scouts on who will go where, not an individual ranking list like Button's.

What's wrong with Subban...off the ice?

He's got a big personality, not like DeAngelo who was suspended for saying some pretty gross and disgraceful things about an actual teammate. A big difference there.

Personally, I want good people on my team. You don't want to draft kids that are going to end up being hated by their own teammates.

Avs think along those lines too, not a chance we draft DeAngelo.

They've done this in the past a few times. I can't remember who they put up though. Anyone remember?

when I said he could be a subban I meant a player who dropped to the 2nd round who becomes a steal and very good pick(subban 2nd rd 43rd)

my favourite non avs players are stamkos/subban/price

Just picked up my Hockey News Draft Preview...in the Avs section, it says that Siemens "is starting to look like a bust".

Nothing like giving a 20 year old, 1st year pro even a little chance. :shakehead

As always, The Hockey News is continuing to do a great job justifying my subscription cancellation from 3-4 years ago (Father's day gift).

Was that written by Dater? I think they have been in the past.

I remember little in the 2007 draft in terms of watching and information, but I don't think he "dropped" to the second round. I think he was always to be a 2nd rounder. I actually looked back to some certain mock drafts, draft rankings, ISS, and CSS. He was never projected to be a 1st round player. So no he didn't drop. Someone dropping is along the lines of Wojtek Wolski or Cam Fowler. Or in other words a dropping player is someone projected higher in experts lists which is falling below that projected line.

Rinne didn't drop to the 8th round, Nashville just selected him them. Of course if you decide to do a re-draft, he would be a top 5 player from that draft.

Strictly looking at the story lines and stats it is easy to see why people are coming to that conclusion.

Offensive production dropped continuously in all years following draft year, stripped of captaincy, injuries, cut immediately in training camp. There hasn't been a lot of positive news surrounding him. Of course, if he was picked in the 2nd round I don't think people would think twice about it, but when all the defencemen picked around him have already transitioned to the NHL, it hurts his value.

I'm not saying I agree with the bust sentiment, just you can see why people who don't follow the Avs are trying to justify that opinion.

I really hope Siemens turns into a player like Brendan Dillon. Might see a similar development too, making major strides at 21/22.

Yes I can appreciate someone that puts their own opinions out there and gives food for thought. Putting a top 10 player that low or vice versa seems to be more to become a talking point more than anything. It doesn't really matter to me though, not a big deal.

THN piece on the Avs is signed ML. The whole thing was pretty negative.

Putting up decent numbers in WHL probably created unrealistic expectations for Siemens two-way play.

Junior numbers (especially for overagers) should taken with a grain of salt. If you play on a good team with good partners and get a tonne of ice time and PP time, you'll probably put up good offensive numbers. That doesn't necessarily carry over to the pro game. When the players start playing in the AHL, we get a better idea of what offense there is.
