The Rangers should be on the lookout for a solid depth forward with some playoff experience. Someone who could play on the 4th line and fit this team. Move a prospect like Bourque, Kristo, Hrivik for a pending depth UFA.

After that, a lot depends on how healthy everyone stays.

Don't know where to ask this, whatever happened to Kaberle skating with the team? not that I want him, just curious.

His playoff experience isn't extensive, but I would love a guy like Jay McClement. Really good in the faceoff circle and a very solid 4th liner.

Agreed.

I'm starting to think that unless teams are giving away cheap UFA veteran defensemen, we're best to just let JMoore play. If his game slips, you sit him for a game or two and see if you can ride Hunwick. Both players should remain hungry.

I like the idea of adding a vet as the 12th/13th F

These are some notable potential rentals (UFA after this season)

- Scottie Upshall
- Michael Frolik
- Joel Ward (unlikely from WAS)
- Kyle Brodziak
- Curtis Glencross
- Shawn Matthias

- Derek Dorsett (part II?)

- Gregory Campbell (would actually be the perfect fit IMO if Boston somehow becomes sellers)

- Mikkel Boedker (only 27)

Perhaps

Who are you thinking of, Viper?

Curtis Glencross would be an unbelievable get. A much more offensive version of Prust. He plays physical. I wanted him at the deadline last year badly. Calgary is in the hunt though so I doubt they move one of their leaders.

Winnipeg, Washington, Boston, and Florida are all in the hunt so at the moment that excludes Frolik, Ward, Campbell, and Upshall.

I don't see why Yotes would trade Boedker. He's part of the future.

Also I'm ok with Moore/Hunwick rotation. It's just if one of them goes down we might be in a tiny spot of bother.

I think the biggest need is for another 3-4th line forward.

Unless Lindberg is brought up and given a shot at this 4th line winger/5th Center Role, we're one injury removed from Tanner Glass in a playoff game. I dont think anyone wants that.

Don't think Glencross is totally necessary though that's a beauty cap hit for what he provides.

I mean yea I agree to an extent on the necessity part. And im not one who is worried about our physical play, but Glencross would be our most physical forward on a consistent basis. I just dont know how the lines would be with him being a LW.

He'll be as expensive as Vermette at least... they're looking to him to lead that team to better days.

Oh I figured as much. I was going along with the discussion for the sake of it. I don't see Calgary moving Glencross at all. At least not now. Maybe last year at the deadline they may have considered depending on the return but even then they would have had to have liked the deal they were getting.

I don't see why Yotes would trade Boedker. He's part of the future.

It's not entirely up to them.

He's set to hit UFA.

They can either re-sign him, lose him for nothing or trade him at the deadline.

If Boedkker feels like going somewhere where losing isn't the norm, there's not much the Yotes can do about it.

He'd be a nice enough rental, plus he's young enough to grow with the team moving forward.

I just want to add that just because a team is in the hunt doesn't necessarily mean they won't be trading any of their pending UFA's.

The Rangers are in the hunt, yet before our recent hot streak, plenty were considering dealing Staal and/or Zuccarello (right or wrong; not re-igniting that discussion)

It's not uncommon for a team in the hunt to deal a pending UFA as a rental and then use some of the acquired assets to address a larger need.

Didn't CBJ trade pending UFA Marian Gaborik to LA in the middle of their run?

If it can happen to Gaborik, it's not out of the realm of possibility or any of those players mentioned, though some are obviously more likely than others.

Columbus traded Gaborik because he was making nearly $8M and having the worst season of his career... If you look, they sold VERY low on him, which cost them a net cost of two roster players, both of which are playing well on the NYR

His 7.8 cap-hit didn't seem to bother them when they traded Brassard+ for him.

A season and a half later the cap-hit is too high?

I think it was much more a case that they didn't want to risk signing him long-term (or knew he didn't want to re-sign there) so they moved him for what they could rather than lose him for nothing.

The point was that they were in the middle of the playoff picture when they traded him. History shows that about 27% of all pending UFAs are dealt at some point in their final year of the contract, regardless of playoff team or not.

The point was to show that some of these players mentioned will be available for the right price at the deadline, even with their teams in the playoff hunt.

Final Thought:

I really wish CBJ held on to Gaborik even if they lost him for nothing after the season.

If he stayed on CBJ or if he was traded to any other team, the Rangers might be the defending Stanley Cup Champs right now. He could've won the Conn Smythe easily IMO.

Well that's a short sighted thought... We could make a ton of what-ifs... but it doesn't get us anywhere.

My point was Gaborik was injured most of the year, and was not producing even when he was playing. Tortorella ran him out of town, and you have the result that you see now.

Is the cap hit too high? absolutely. Gaborik is injured on average about 10-20 games per year in his career. He's not a two way player, he has the ability to disappear in games...

$5M over SEVEN YEARS for a player who is injured for 25% of the season on a regular basis? He's only producing because he's playing with a top end center in Kopitar.

This is all very off topic

Gaborik got traded because the Blue Jackets didn't feel they needed him. He only played 1/3 of the team's games at that point and the team saw massive improvement without him.

And he got such a paltry return because of a combination of his UFA status, uncertainty about his health and a flooded market. He was one of 4 scoring wingers to get traded on deadline day. The only one to get a decent return was St Louis, and that's because he wasn't a UFA.

While I do not expect a play for Taylor Hall (at all), I do think that we are going to be looking for more than a marginal upgrade to the teams 4th line.

Say what you want about how good both Miller and Fast have been for this team. Or Hagelin for that matter, but if there's a deal to be made that improves this team that costs one or two of those names there, be assured that Sather will make it.

If the belief is that a 3rd line center (Vermette) is the answer in that he plays well in all three zones, improves the most significant area of weakness up front, the you can be sure that Sather will pull the trigger on that deal if Miller/Fast a 2nd and another marignal add is included.

Hayes can shift back to wing for the stretch run and playoffs and we go into the off-season looking to answer roster questions with Duke and Butch as the hopeful answers.

If Sather feels we are that sort of asset away from getting out of the Eastern Conference, he will pull the trigger.

Honestly, I think we could get Vermette without adding Miller/Fast into the deal. A 2015 2nd round pick (or both our 2nd rounders this year), McI, Lindberg, and somebody like Kristo should be enough to land him.
