Updated some of the news and notes stuff with links for UFAs who look to be on their way out.

To recap, the Pens have roughly $14 million available to fill eight or nine spots. Spend away, guys.

Ok, here we go.

1: Get rid of Dupuis, Scuderi, Adams, (any way you can, just get rid of their contracts.)
2: Resign Sutter 3.25M, Spaling 2M, Despres 1.2M, Engelland 950k, Megna 900k, Samuelsson 850k, Gibbons 800k
3: Trade DP+ for Bobby Ryan
4: Trade for Jordan Nolan
5: Sign Kulemin 3.25M, Tom Gilbert 1.5M

Run Lines/Pairings of:

Kunitz - Crosby - Ryan
Kulimen - Malkin - Hornqvist (Spellcheck HATES this line! ;))
Spaling - Sutter - Bennett
Nolan - Payerl - Megna
Gibbons

Martin - Letang
Maatta - Gilbert (Dumolin or Harrington fill in for Maatta until he returns.)
Despres - Bortuzzo
Samuelsson - Engelland

Fluery - Zatkoff

More than 1.325M in cap space after this, in case I lowballed anyone. This is also assuming we are able to move Adams' contract. If we have to buy him out it will be a little less. Either way, these lines are really good if you ask me. Not 100% on the forth line though. But this roster seems like it would fit with the new coaching staff's vision. Left wings/D are all lefties, right wings/D are all righties, lots of decent size and balance. See anything that could be improved on? let me know. Once again, be kind, this is all in fun. :)

Edit: P.S. The Bobby Ryan trade only happens if we are able to talk to his agent, and get an extension worked out beforehand.

Kulemin seems like the easy FA sign here, I don't know if we can afford someone better that fit Geno wing.
The 3rd line seems OK with an healthy Dupuis.
On the 4th line Gibbons and Megna should be a good cheap fit, light years away from Gladams, and Sill too palyed well last year before the injury down in WBS. Also Zolnierczyk was pretty good, and would be good as 12th/13th forward.
No need to FA sign on D, unless Scuderi is on his way out (doubt it). And maybe he will rebound after a hell of a year under Bylsma inferno system. Or maybe not...

Kunitz-Crosby-Bennett

Spaling-Sutter-Dupuis
Gibbons-Sill-Megna
Zolnierczyk

Despres-Bortuzzo
Scuderi-Samuelsson/Dumolin/Harrington

That line up isn't very tough. We'd get manhandled in the playoffs.

http://triblive.com/mobile/6332545-96/penguins-letang-contract

PHILADELPHIA – A busy Penguins offseason is unlikely to include contract extensions for goalie Marc-Andre Fleury and defenseman Paul Martin.

However, the Penguins believe Martin prefers to test free agency next summer. Also, Rutherford believes it is time to start playing the most NHL-ready among the franchise's crop of top defensive prospects.

If people dislike the Neal trade for not maximizing returns on assets, letting Martin walk for nothing after a year with a new coaching staff and probable roster shakeup and thus probably not the best chance at a cup doesn't seem like the smartest use of an asset. Problem is the most ready of top defensive prospects is injured to start the year, so his experience would be hard to replace anytime soon. Still, if it were me I'd see if there was any serious interest in him, if they need cap space and bottom 6 depth, there's not many other non-untouchable players on the team with both enough value in a trade to be worth moving for the return, and taking up enough cap space to be worth moving to make room for others with. Seems Rutherford has no plans to move Letang, nobodies gonna want Scuderi, so Martin out of the few that would, makes a lot of sense trading.

What about something like this?

Sign 1 of Booth/Seto to a 1 yr show me contract.
Sign Kulemin
Sign Vitale, Fraser (or whomever like him)

Let Seto/Booth and BB battle it out for the top 6 spot. Spaling on the 4th line gives you tons of flexibility to change up the bottom 6, especially with Vitale still in the lineup (I do like his game, and hope we keep him). Megna goes to WBS, and I believe doesn't have to clear waivers to come up/down.

Trading Martin now when we have 3 or 4 D who have under 3 years of experience would be BRUTAL. Ideally we can extend him later on in the season if he likes it here, and the numbers work (5m x 4?). Him here long term (say another 4 yrs) would be great for us. His game shouldn't go down hill as it's not based on physical play, but smart positioning and skating. As our young D get experience, take icetime away from him and move him down. Front load the contract, so that if need be, it's an easy contract to move as it goes on.

I'm not enamored with that line up. We're really not anywhere close to what we'll need regarding toughness come playoff time. We have to get a guy like Downie, maybe two in that mold.

Is Sundqvist going to be in the AHL or the SEL next season?
It's a good question. Sounds like he'll probably stay and play for Skelleftea one more year, but I don't think anything's written in stone.

Pretty sure Burgs has mentioned that Sundqvist will be stateside in a few weeks for the summer prospect camp, so we should get a better indication of what the plans are then.

We need 1 more top 6 winger. That may or may not be BB. But if it is, he needs someone to challenge him for that spot, or in case of injuries. We can't really afford someone like Vrbata or Hemsky. Would be nice, but isn't realistic.

Both Seto and Booth can be effective 3rd liners. They also both have some upside should they mesh, and we need them in the top 6.

Granted it's Rossi, but it sounds like you don't have that option.

However, the Penguins believe Martin prefers to test free agency next summer. Also, Rutherford believes it is time to start playing the most NHL-ready among the franchise's crop of top defensive prospects.

Trading Letang would have solved a lot of our cap issues, and in the process given us the ability to strengthen both are depth on wing as well as add a capable blue liner. Instead of Neal, Letang should have been the one to go.

Having both Kulemin and Dupuis/Bennett/Setoguchi in the top six is brutal. We need to get another legit top six winger.
100% agree. I'm all for getting Vrbata but we'll likely have to shed salary to do so.

I started making a more realistic lineup, but ended up with this dream of a roster. Technically it would fit under the cap if we were able to swing all these deals after finding a home for scuds/dupuis contracts.

It was TIOPS (lol I know) but it says we are interested in Kulemin, Moss, and Malholtra.

Now why the **** are we interested in Moss or Malholtra????

If er extend the midget MAF I'm gonna flip. Not only is he a big reason we are wasting sid and genos prime. But he's also destroying my prime years ad a fan!

Count me in for a Vrbata or Setoguchi FA pick up to round out the top 6.
Cheaper and may be just as good as Hemsky imo. The Pens may just go with Bennett or Dupuis to fill out the top 6 though. Bringing in Kulemin to replace JJ is a no-brainer.

I would love if we could count on Bennett beeing the answer to round out the top 6 and keep Dupuis on the 3rd line, where he can be effecitve.

But I just don´t believe we can count on Bennett´s health. I think he would be good enough to play there, but he needs to stay healthy first.

I think there is a good chance that Kulemin will sign with the Pens, and I believe he will play with Malkin most of the time. So if you do the math, one more Top 6 or Top 9 winger needed. JR will sign 2 players for the 4th line, I am pretty sure about that.

Let´s see, if we can fit 3 or 4 players under the Cap without moving somebody out.

Trade Bennett + 1st + (?) to Ottawa for Ryan
Trade Dupuis and Scuderi for cap space
Plan the parade

Stempniak, Stoner and Malhotra are just "off the top of my head" placeholders. Swap in relatively similar players if you want. Still decent wiggle room.

I do not see Hemsky fitting in there. Sid, Geno, and Hemsky all do their best when they are carrying the puck up ice.
